She looks at us, shocked, but she recovers quickly and smiled sweetly at my landlady. She even has the audacity to say hi cheerfully. She quickly secured the towel wrapped around her with her right hand.
I look at my landlady. Her face is red all over, almost like a tomato. I know that she's going to explode anytime soon. I should be doing something but I can't even think. I'm just looking back and forth stupidly between the girl and my landlady.
"Sino ka?" I manage to get some words out of my mouth finally.
That was a mistake.
She offers her right hand for a handshake and said, "I'm Audrey, Gian's girlfriend."
As soon as she extends her hand, she also realizes that it isn't the best thing to do in her situation. But it's too late. The next thing I knew, the towel is on the floor, my landlady is screaming at the top of her lungs, and Audrey is back inside the bathroom to hide her nakedness.
I can barely think clearly. I can barely understand what my landlady is saying. From what I can make sense of, she's just giving us until this afternoon to clear out of the apartment. After screaming for a while, she storms out of our apartment and slams the door on her way out. The sound of the slamming door jerks Gian out of his sleep.
"What happened?" he asked, still half-asleep.
Audrey comes out of the bathroom, towel wrapped tightly around her body. She looks at me apologetically. She grabs her clothes and goes back to the bathroom to put them on. When Audrey is back inside, I pull the blanket from Gian angrily.
"Hoy gumising ka nga diyan!" I smack his face with a pillow.
He gets up angrily and faces me, "Bakit ka ba nagagalit? Ang aga aga eh!"
"Alam mo ba kung anong ginawa mo? You know the rules. I specifically told you not to bring your girlfriend here kasi bawal. Now, look what you've done! Dinamay mo pa ako!"
From being angry, now, he looks confused. "Was that Miss Taray just now?"
"Oo, at naabutan nya dito 'yang girlfriend mo. 'Di ba alam mo naman 'yung rule ni Miss Taray?"
"She wanted to surprise me. Uuwi naman siya kaagad ehh. I just didn't expect na ganito kaagap pupunta si Miss Taray."
I sigh in frustration. Audrey comes back and sits beside Gian. I've been living here in this apartment for three years now. I never thought I'll be kicked out just like the others.
"So, paano ngayon 'yan? We only have until this afternoon para humanap ng lilipatan." I say more to myself than to Gian.
"You want me to talk to Miss Taray? I can explain to her that it's my fault. She doesn't need to evict you, too. I can stay with Audrey for a while." He's feeling guilty, at least.
"You don't have to. Alam mo naman kung gaano kahirap kausap 'yon si Miss Taray. Saka pag nagdecide 'yon, final na." I sigh again. I don't have that many friends and thinking about where I should go hurts my head.
"You can come with us sa condo ni Audrey. You can sleep in her couch pansamantala habang naghahanap ka ng place. Okay lang naman, 'di ba, Audrey?" Gian turns to her girlfriend for confirmation.
Audrey looks at me shyly and says, "Of course. It's the least I can do."
I'm tempted to accept their offer but my pride won't let me. I'm so used to being independent to rely on other people now, even if they're the ones who brought me this problem in the first place.
"Thank you, pero may matutuluyan naman ako. I'm just gonna call them later," I lied. "We should start packing now. Baka bumalik na naman si Miss Taray. Mag-hysterical pa 'yon. Alam mo naman 'yon parang dragon kapag nagalit," I joke to ease the tension a little bit.
Gian chuckles and Audrey smiles a little bit.
"I should leave para makapag-empake na kayo," Audrey announced. She turns to me and apologizes again, "I'm really sorry. Hindi ko talaga sinasadya."
"Okay na 'yon. Wala na tayo magagawa. Nice to meet you," I smile at her.
Gian puts on some decent clothes and walks Audrey out. When they're gone, I start packing my things up unwillingly, still unsure of where to go.
