Francesco was standing in the corner of the warehouse reserved for shooting exercises and was watching his sons training intently with his armed crossed over his chest leaning to the wall.
Vincenzo was a better shooter than Viggo. But Viggo could be as good if he did put more effort in practice. Viggo normally didn't go with challenging shots that could risk not hitting target but Vincenzo was a risk taker. He tried to challenge himself by going for longer shots and moving targets were his specialty. But Francesco knew their accuracy in shooting could improve with practice. It was something else that worried him more. Viggo followed his instructions sometimes with seconds of hesitation. He didn't like that. He had to kick it out of him somehow by the time he reached eighteen.
Francesco shouted "Halt."
Both his sons stopped shooting and turned to their father waiting for instructions.
Francesco spoke "look at those two wooden coffins at each side of the room. Viggo you walked to the one on the right hand side of the room and you Vincenzo walk to the one on the left hand side of the room.
The youngsters complied immediately and walked to where their father instructed them to. They turned to their father.
Francesco nodded "Now. Open the coffins."
As Francesco expected Viggo froze at first and looked at his father as though hoping his father was going to take back his order but as met his father's hardened stare, he turned and reluctantly started to unlock the coffin.
As he opened the coffin, Viggo was shocked to find the top of coffin covered with a black fabric. It was impossible to see what was underneath or whether there was anything underneath it. He took a deep breath and he looked at his brother who had his coffin open and stood up looking at their father waiting for instructions. Viggo did the same.
Francesco's penetrating gaze was on his youngest son as he approached his sons. "Whats the matter Viggo? Does this task bother you? You look uneasy."
Viggo spoke "Well.... Yes father. I mean no..... I don't know father.... I was afraid of finding a body inside." There was no point lying to his father. Francesco had taught his sons that lying was the ultimate crime in his household. If they lied to him or tried to deceive him, they were going to be dealt with mercilessly.
Vincenzo spoke "It can't be father. He is not afraid of dead bodies. He has seen dead men before."
Francesco didn't move his stare from his youngest son's eyes as he spoke "Vincenzo, your brother didn't say anything about being afraid of finding a dead body. He said he was afraid to find a body. An alive one perhaps. Isn't that right Viggo?"
Viggo nodded reluctantly "Yes father."
Francesco looked at both his sons "I am going to count to three. When I say three, both of you will turn around and fire three shots at three points equally spaced on the black fabric covering the coffin." He then looked at Viggo "It's time to face your fears."
Francesco started to count as he stood in the middle of his sons "1...."
Viggo was worried. What there was a man strapped underneath that black fabric. What if he killed someone?
Vincenzo on the other hand was anticipating his fathers count down hoping to do well in training.
The boys both trusted their father with their lives. Their fathers word was the law. They knew anything he asked was for a reason. That was what made Viggo to turn at the same time as his brother as his father finished counting " 2..... 3."
Three shots subsequently fired by both boys at the same time. That made Francesco take a deep breath of relief. Maybe it wasn't as bad as he thought. His youngest son still wasn't as defiant as he thought in need of hard lessons.
He instructed " Now both of you remove the black fabric and see what you shot at."
Both his sons immediately complied but Francesco noticed that Viggo's hands were shaking and he took a step backwards as he uncovered what was underneath.
Viggo spoke " Father.... Julius Caesar, the book?"
Vincenzo laughed as he picked the book in the coffin. "Julious caesar. I see what you are trying to teach us. You want us to be ready to defend against back stabbers. Always ready to shoot if an unsuspecting man behind us reaches for his gun. We were dead if we hadn't turned around to shoot on time."
Francesco nodded as he walked to his eldest son. He put a hand on his shoulder "Partly that is right. I do try to pass that message to you. But son, think about it. If both of you do as I teach you, there will be no need to turn around and shoot blindly at whoever that maybe behind you. I made sure that there were no traitorous characters in my organisation when I recruited my men. Any sign of possible mutiny was dealt with only when I took over at the very beginning. I have never had to shoot at anything behind me blindly. I hope you never need to either. But if you ever do ....." He then turned to viggo. He walked to him and put a hand on his shoulder " Make sure you kill the one underneath the black fabric without hesitation. It could be anyone. Only if they have Rosario blood, then you are allowed to hesitate. Maybe that's when you should just ..... close the coffin. You lock them away for eternity if you don't have the heart to shoot. But that's the only time you may hesitate."
Vincenzo objected " But you let uncle Angelo live, father...."
Francesco turned to him " Of course I did. He is your mother's brother. He is one of those people that I just needed to close the coffin on them at some costs..... Now, both of you get back, get yourself cleaned up and wear your smart clothes. I will see you at breakfast. As I said, we have to cut this session short. Your mother has a long day ahead just like most Sundays. So do I." He then turned to walked to the door and turned to his sons with disapproval as he saw them still standing frozen next to the coffins looking at each other. "Hurry. Will you? I don't have all day."
Vincenzo looked up at his father "Shouldn't we be getting extra laps for disturbing you last night?"
Francesco spoke "You should be but you wont be on this occasion. I have my reasons. Now get back to your rooms and do as I asked or you will get extra laps." He then walked away opening the door, stepping outside to breath in the crispy air. He heard his sons slow foot steps behind him following him as they were whispering. He laughed to himself as he walked to the mansion. Adele had promised two days of romance to him and was taking two days off work in exchange for him forgiving his sons. Adele knew how to win him over. He was so displeased with his sons for causing the interruption to his time with Adele but he couldn't stay too mad at them for too long since their mischief had lead to him getting Adele on her own for two days. In some ways, he hoped his sons were going to make Vienna knock on his bedroom door again in future but maybe not too often. He loved the peace and quiet at night with his wife. And also he wanted his children to learn to get along with each other and work as a team.
When Francesco reached the mansion, he went straight to the kitchen as his sons made their way to their bedrooms. Francesco approached Adele as she was looking at her cook book sitting behind the dining table on a chair. The aroma of the food was too good for Francesco to take Adele put of the kitchen. So he closed the kitchen door behind him and locked it.
Adele turned around and sighed " Not now. The kids are coming soon."
Francesco spoke with a mischievous grin." I need you now."
Adele stood up and spoke " Francesco...."
Francesco walked to her " I love it when you say my name." He then wrapped his arms around her waist as he squeezed her to himself. " say my name again."
Adele spoke " Enough, Francesco...." He stopped her by touching his lips to hers kissing her deeply. Adele responded immediately, kissed him back and wrapped her arms around his neck.
Francesco carried on kissing her passionately as he lifted her up and sat her down on the table. He deepened the kiss and held Adele tightly to himself as the length of the kiss became irrelevant. The time was meaningless as they felt as one.
It was Adele who pulled away first slightly breathing hard " That was .... breathtaking." She then smiled " But we need to stop honey. The kids would be wondering what we do when the door is locked."
Francesco chuckled " They are taking their morning shower. You won't see our kids yet. No excuses." He moved his hands to Adele's hips " We have time sweetheart."
Francesco then moved his hands to front of Adele's dress. He slowly moved his hands from over her knees to her tights at a slow pace that made Adele shiver in anticipation as he was staring into her eyes intently. He then reached to her knees and started folding her skirt from her knees to her tights. He rested then rested his hands on her bare tights as he leaned closer and kissed Adele's lips. He then whispered as he pulled away " I find it hard to resist making out with you this morning. Your skin is soft and silky. Your mind is pure. Your heart is beating fast, excited for my touch just like how my heart beats fast when I touch you. Exactly like how every time our bodies touch since we got married."
He then reached his hand up and cupped her cheeks " I can't imagine my life with out you. What did I ever do to deserve you as my wife?" He then didn't let her answer and missed her lips.
That was when noises were heard from a distance in the corridors.
Francesco pulled away and rolled down Adele's skirt. He sounded irritated " The buggers are early." He then walked to the kitchen door and unlocked it. He then turned to Adele's smiling form as she got off the table and straightened her dress " The buggers are our pride and joy."
Francesco walked up Adele " I know your smile. You like it when they come early. Did you change the breakfast time? I will show you in our bedroom tonight what happens to rule breakers."
Adele spoke in an innocent voice " Honey. I have got nothing to do with the kids coming early to breakfast."
Francesco pulled a chair out taking out his newspaper " Rule breaker."
Adele laughed as she turned around and poured some coffee into a cup and placed it in front of Francesco " I am your rule breaker though. She then winked." This made Francesco narrow his eyes " Tonight ...."
That was when the door opened and the Vincenzo and Viggo came inside speaking in unison " Good morning."
Adele turned around " Good morning. Kids. You are early. Take your seats and I will get you your breakfast.
Viggo and Vincenzo sat next to their father.
Francesco lowered down his news paper and looked at his sons " Good morning. Where is your sister?"
Vincenzo spoke " Oh, she must have forgotten that mother asked us to come to breakfast fifteen minutes early from now on to spend more time together...."
Francesco spoke " Your mother is thoughtful. I wasn't informed of this." He then turned to Adele who was setting plates up on the counter to stuff them with food soon. Francesco whispered " Your mother will soon realise this was not a great idea. Since you kids may need the time for something else."
Vincenzo spoke " No. It's fine father. I like taking my time for breakfast."
Viggo spoke " You mean, you get to eat more breakfast. Seriously, lay off the eggs and pancakes." He then turned to their father who was reading his paper now "Father , we like spending quality time with you,"
Adele turned to Viggo " Your father does too. He likes seeing you for longer time before he goes on to start his lengthy schedule everyday. Believe me Viggo and ....." She then stopped as she saw Francesco angling his newspaper in a way that only she saw the look in his eyes. He was warning her to stop. He then mouthed to her "I will punish you for this tonight."
That meant more intensity tonight. Not that she complained. Adele cleared her throat " Would you like more coffee Francesco?".
Francesco spoke "No." as he got on reading and thinking about his plans for the bedroom that night.
The kids were helping themselves to bread, butter and jam on the table and took no notice of the exchange between their parents."
Vincenzo looked up and asked " Mum do we have pancakes today? It smells like pancakes."
Adele turned around to the cooker " No, son. We have waffles in the oven. I am just warming up your big English breakfast that I just made earlier." She then lifted one of the lids to the pans on the hobs of the cooker as she turned to her sons " Do you like big breakfast? Or you like waffles?"
Vincenzo spoke " Big breakfast."
Viggo spoke " I like pancakes but like big breakfast too."
Adele smiled sweetly " Are you sure you don't want to try some waffles too. It's hot and tasty. She then thought to herself " Like your father's lips."
Francesco was listening to the exchange between Adele and his sons with amusement as he was reading his newspaper. Adele was trying to turn the kids against him making them eat his waffles that he loved eating fresh on sunday mornings. He thought to himself " Good luck with that Adele."
Viggo spoke " Waffles are a strange choice for teenagers to eat." He then turned to Vincenzo " Aren't waffles strange breakfast choice. They are desert food not breakfast food for teenagers as father says. I can't stand waffles."
Vincenzo shrugged as he was buttering his bread " Father is right. Waffles are for breakfast for adults mostly. Think about it, no one buys waffles in our cafeteria in school except the lecturers in the mornings. It doesn't have as much calories as eggs and sausages I guess. Who buys waffles when there is omelets and sausage rolls on the cafeteria menu? It could never make me feel full after the morning run. I don't like waffles at all."
Francesco thought to himself with approval " You are your fathers sons. Taking my side even unknowingly." He then carried on reading his newspaper as taking sips from coffee. He then said to himself " Lets see if you keep taking your fathers side for years to come."
Vienna then came inside the kitchen looking around with worry " Good morning. Am I late? There is ten minutes left though."
Everyone muttered a good morning to Vienna.
Francesco looked up and shook his head "You are not late. Your mother thinks it's a good idea for you to come fifteen minutes early to breakfast from now on. Take a seat cupcake."
Vienna sat down next to Viggo and sighed " Yes. We have big breakfast."
Adele turned " Would you like waffles too?"
Vienna spoke " No mum. We are reminded by father all the time that we need more protein. I have a basketball match on Wednesday and besides I love eggs and sausages."
Francesco smiled at his daughter " Your mother understands that."
