Sunday morning, the kids woke up like normal, took their showers and dressed for what they knew to be a mission day. Spinel was making breakfast this morning as Bismuth was out. After the kids finished their meal of cereal and fruit, Page having a lot of fruit, Spinel and Amethyst took the kids outside to play tag. They implemented what they called "the three second rule", which is, you can use gem powers but only for three seconds at a time. They played this often while Bismuth did her own thing, most of the time she went to her forge, but Bismuth was locating the objectives for their mission today, as last night Sophie only had a vague idea of where to look.
The game went well enough, the kids were laughing, sometimes using the rule to quickly tag a sibling, or Spinel. Spinel would only tag Amethyst or Steven, and Amethyst would only tag Spinel or Page. The twins ended up just playing by themselves turning into a game of Garnet light tag, since their gems would glow garnet when they touched. Spinel noodled her arm to catch Amethyst but went passed the three seconds and Amethyst stopped the game to argue.
"You can't keep breaking the rules Spin, that's not a very good example you're setting for the kids" she yelled.
"You climbed the cliff Ame, just how was Anyone supposed to tag you in three seconds up there?" Spinel countered.
"They weren't, that's the point"
"That's breaking the rules just as much if not more than what I did!"
"UGH We have very different ideas about when breaking the rules is okay, this is why we haven't become Kunzite since the kids were little! We can't just have fun together!" Amethyst shouted in an attempt to end the argument. Spinel just huffed and kinda... melted into a pile of noodles. Steven rushed over to console her but first asked about Kunzite. Spinel wound Steven into a hug, and Page when she came over.
"Well, Kunzite is the fusion of myself and Amethyst. We used to become her for you guys, or if we needed a few extra hands in tight spots. She was a fun aunt, that's me, and a very good fighter, that's mostly Ames. But, she's right, we have different ideas of fun, or what counts as a gem power, since I don't actually shape shift my arms, I didn't consider that breaking the rules, but I did consider Ames using her strength to climb the rocks just as bad. Rose and Pearl would both be mad at us if they could see us squabble like this, how about we dust off and head back to see if Bismuth shows up soon."
Back inside the house the kids played some cards until Bismuth warped in, letting everyone know that she knows where the heaven and earth beetles are. Sophie looked up, with her eye closed. "Me and Robbie will go with Bismuth, Steven and Page with Amethyst and Spinel, they'll be going for the heaven beetle."
Bismuth clapped the other two gems on the back, "Don't have too much fun you two, we all know you guys clash gems sometimes, but you have to keep the meatballs safe"
The two huffed a bit, and took the hands of each of the kids, got their destination and warped off, Bismuth and the twins following close behind to grab their own target.
The four of them arrived at the Sky Spire and immediately start trudging up the long staircase. Steven and Page start asking questions about Kunzite, Page being analytical, annoying Spinel, and Steven being silly, which kinda annoyed Amethyst. A goat jumped out as they reached the top of the stairs, and Steven and Page jumped.
"It's a Magical Goat Guardian!" Steven shouted.
"You have to answer his riddles! It'll be Fun!" Page added.
"No" The gems answered.
"It's just a regular mountain goat, see?" Spinel said as she went to pet the creature, until it bit her, "Bad Mountain goat." she admonished.
As they continued, with the goat in tow, Steven and Page exchanged glances and started to sing:
All we wanna do, is see you turn into a giant woman (giant woman)
All we wanna be, are some kids who get to see, a giant woman
All we wanna do, is help you turn into, a giant woman (Giant woman)
All we wanna be, are the kids who get to see, a giant woman.
S: Oh I know that it'd be great P: And we just can't wait B: To see the person you are together
You know that you'll have fun, you'll be our number 1, because you'll be, a giant woman
You might even like being together, and if you don't it won't be forever
But if it were We, we'd surely like to be, a giant woman (a giant woman)
All we want to do, is see you turn into, a giant woman
While the kids were singing the group made it almost all the way up the spire. By the time they were done, a path of floating islands was the only thing in between them and the Heaven Beetle. The goat, affectionately called Steven Jr, leaps away onto the first island, bleats then jumps across the rest. Amethyst, getting an idea, grabs Page and Steven and throws them to the first island, jumping on afterwards. Spinel stays on the ground shouting that the kids safety is their first priority, and generally being upset. Amethyst in an effort to prove how safe it is, jumps up and down, but the island proves to be unstable and the two hybrids fall off. Working quickly, Spinel jumps off and warps her arms and legs into a net to catch the kids. Amethyst wraps her whip around Spinel's waist and pulls the three of them up once they stop falling.
"Wow, that was the worst game of fetch I've ever played" Spinel laments once back on the island.
"I hear ya there, not the fishing I was expecting this weekend" Amethyst agrees.
"Are you kidding" both kids shout "that was so much fun!"
"Well. After we stopped being in jeopardy anyway" Page clarifies.
"I guess, once you guys were safe, it wasn't so bad" Spinel said, Amethyst nodding along. They then looked at each other and huffed again, Spinel wrapping her three companions, and stretched her legs across the islands to walk the rest of the way.
Once at the top, they find the miniature temple at the top, there's Steven Jr. but there's no beetle in sight. Spinel starts to panic a little, mumbling about not wanting to play another waiting game. Amethyst tries to cheer her up, but it doesn't work, and the panicking gets worse. Steven Jr. starts bleating in their own panic, and the kids try to calm their guardians down in an effort to calm the poor animal, but a giant bird monster flies up and swallows the goat whole. Now, with everyone panicking, they flee into the dome of the temple, with the giant bird following behind, it's head too big to fit in the door.
"Fun or not, we need help here, guys, you should probably form Kunzite, this is literally bigger than all of us." Page suggested. With no other option the two gems attempted the fusion dance.
Amethyst and Spinel bowed to each other, the gems on their chest glowing. To an imagined beat, Amethyst starts to dance like she's in a club, while Spinel, surprisingly in the same beat, dances a polka. They move towards each other, but their eyes close for a moment and they run into each other instead, and a bright white-pink glow envelopes them, grows tall, then splits and throws the gems to the side.
"Can we try that again, and maybe keep our eyes open this time? Fusion isn't a game of "Blind Man's Bluff"" Amethyst asked.
"Fusion isn't a game at all" Spinel countered. They looked at the kids apologetically, and poised up to try again. just at that time the giant bird crashes through the ceiling and swallows the kids whole.
"Kids!" The gems shouted at the hole.
Inside the bird, Steven and Page find a bunch of piles of junk, with Steven Jr. on top of one idly munching away on something.
"Steven Jr.! How can you eat at a time like this?" Steven admonishes. Page notices a beetle in his mouth.
"Hey, is that the Heaven Beetle? Let me see it." she says and grabs the beetle, but Steven Jr. refuses to let go "Hey, be a good goat and give Auntie Page the magic bug!" A rumbling occurs, causing the junk pile to collapse, and the kids and Steven Jr. fall off it. Page now has possession of the Heaven Beetle. She tosses it to Steven.
"I got it!" he shouts. Steven Jr. approaches and attempts to eat it. "No! B-bad goat! You're no son of mine!" Several giant purple arms start penetrating from the ground, frightening the kids and Steven Jr., as they try to flee.
"What's going on?!" Page yells, as an arm grabs Steven Jr.
"Steven Jr.!" the kids yell as two more arms grab them too and pull away.
In the light, the kids finally see what grabbed them, a tall gem, with purple skin, or was it pink? Every time she moved the color changed. She had four arms and her body was twisted as it stretched to the bird, unwinding as she brought the kids and goat back to the ground. When they made it all the way down, the gem stood about twice the height of Bismuth and was lanky like Spinel, but with broad shoulders like Amethyst. The kids guessed this was Kunzite, and when she put them down, they looked up at her in awe.
Once the kids were safe, Kunzite turned back to the giant bird, as it split apart from the damage earlier. what was left was a bunch of littler birds in a swarm. Kunzite summoned four pink whips from Amethysts gem, and wove them together into a sling, using the spiky balls at the end for bullets. She swung the large weapon around for momentum before letting loose a barrage of purple-pink balls at the swarm, poofing the lot of them. Kunzite caught the gems in the sling like it was a net, and bubbled them all together before sending it off. She turned back to the kids and smiled. Steven was the first to speak.
"Do, do you know us?" he said, almost to quietly for the tall gem to hear.
"All ya'll wanna do, is see us turn into" she sang in response, a slight southern twang in her voice.
"A Giant Woman" the kids gasped.
Back at the temple, the three of them warped in to find Bismuth and the twins already back. Seeing Kunzite, Bismuth giggled, "Looks like you guys had fun! Where's the beetle?"
"Uh, I don't got it" Kunz said before splitting and landing the two gems on either side of the warp pad.
"I do!" Steven shouted, holding said beetle in the air. Bismuth had him put it in a terrarium with the earth beetle before she bubbled it and sent it inside. Sophie walked up to her siblings, and put a hand on each of their shoulders.
"I Saw you guys helping Kunzite come together, and you did really well, our moms would be proud, and you two are going to be great at fusing yourself one day" she said proudly.
"Wait, with each other?" Page asked.
"Not at first, but eventually." her sister replied.
