Shangguan Yu took off the headset and then covered his face. Ah, if he continued like this, then maybe their first date would become even more awkward. He shouldn’t make both their expectations grow if he didn’t know what would happen. That wouldn’t be good for either of them.
Before he could worry further, there was a notification on his phone. Taking it out of his pocket and glancing at the screen, he found that Ao Jing had messaged him. He stared at the text for a moment, not quite sure what to do with that. Should he … write back? Or maybe it would be better to pretend he was currently busy with his family so he hadn’t seen it yet and wouldn’t have time to answer anyway? Then again, Ao Jing was wishing him a good time with his family. Not reacting would be kind of strange …
Biting his lip, he finally typed a short thank you and then hurriedly put his phone away before he rushed out of the room and back downstairs. He just couldn’t deal with this right now. Hopefully, things would soon return to normal between them.
His sister and brother-in-law were currently sitting on the couch, intently staring at the screen of the laptop standing in front of them.
"What are you doing?"
Shangguan Xin flinched and then turned to her brother, hurriedly reaching out and trying to close the laptop. Unfortunately, her hand missed and she instead just managed to hit her finger against the edge. She winced.
Seeing that his wife had tried but failed, Yu Lan reached out instead and closed it before reaching to the side and rubbing her leg for comfort. He didn’t even look at her though as if nothing had happened and instead spoke to Shangguan Yu. "It’s nothing. Your sister and I were just looking up some things."
Shangguan Yu raised his brows. He might have believed that if the two of them hadn’t immediately closed the laptop when he asked and then acted so suspiciously. Also, his sister still looked as if she had a guilty conscience. She had never been a good liar. Obviously, something was fishy here. "Oh? What kind of stuff did you look up?" He went over and sat down on the other side, giving the two of them a smile. To be honest, he hadn’t been that curious before but now, he really wondered what it might be if they went to such great pains to keep it from him. Was it some kind of surprise?
His sister and brother-in-law exchanged a glance as if trying to determine what they should do now. In the end, Yu Lan sighed.
"Actually, your sister and I were looking at dating locations. I know you said we didn’t need to but we just couldn’t help but want to support you a bit. And since you were already busy with asking all those questions, we felt that taking a closer look at what is around here might help you out the most. At the very least, now you won’t have to spend time at it if you like one of them."
Shangguan Yu smiled at that. "Then why are you being so secretive about it? I don’t think that will help very much. In the end, you need to tell me what you found after all. Otherwise, who’ll make sure that I’ll go there? Do you want to send an anonymous letter?"
Shangguan Xin gave a short laugh. "Well, I guess you’re right." She patted her husband’s arm, motioning for him to open the laptop again and show her brother.
Yu Lan obliged and then motioned for him to come over. "How about we show you what we found so far? I was thinking of maybe going to some of these places tomorrow to have a look if they really are what they promise. You never know with these advertisements online after all."
Shangguan Yu came around, sitting down next to the two of them and looked at the tabs they had opened. "Well, you’re probably not basing this off an ad, are you? Didn’t you look at the reviews?"
Shangguan Xin reached over and slapped his leg. "You, ah! Aren’t you also learning IT? Have you never heard that reviews can be bought? Why would you believe that? Honestly, you can’t believe anything on the internet."
Shangguan Yu almost wanted to laugh at that. Yes, he couldn’t trust anything on the internet. Whether it was his maybe future boyfriend and online-husband or the reviews of any dating spots. "I guess sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith and give it a try. And even if other people didn’t like it, Ao Jing and I might."
Shangguan Xin sighed. "Look at you! I’m not even sure if you’re taking this as seriously as I am."
Yu Lan reached over and rubbed her back. "Don’t worry too much. I’ll go over tomorrow while the three of you go shopping for clothes and take a look myself. If it’s really not as good as they say online, we can still search for something else."
Shangguan Yu shook his head in exasperation but still didn’t try to talk them out of it. Anyway, they would probably just do it anyway. "Alright, what did you think of?"
His sister immediately picked herself up again and beamed at him. "Well, since you said that you wanted to talk a bit we first found you a nice little cafe. Their cakes are supposed to be heavenly and the atmosphere seemed quite good. You can just go there and relax."
Yu Lan nodded along and then showed him a few pictures on the laptop.
Shangguan Yu couldn’t help but be impressed. He had never seen this particular cafe before but it really looked like a good dating spot: The furniture was wooden and shimmered brightly in the light, the walls had been painted apricot, giving the room a warm atmosphere and there were some partitions between the tables with flowers that made sure everybody had enough privacy. This was the perfect place for a first date. His sister and brother-in-law had really outdone themselves.
Shangguan Xin grinned when she saw how happy he was. "That’s not all! Wait until you see the second one!" She rubbed her hands and motioned at her husband again. "I figured it might be a bit too boring just sitting in a cafe all the time and you’d need some entertainment but since you said that going to the movies wouldn’t be a good idea, we figured that doing something else might be better. And since the two of you are into games, we thought that you might as well go and play a bit outside."
This time, Shangguan Yu really couldn’t help but be surprised. He leaned closer and looked at the page that his brother-in-law opened on the laptop.
It was actually that of a game center.
