I woke up with the sun, both Kate and Liam were asleep. I got up and stretched. I looked over my shoulder seeing the two shirts by the base of the tree.
I walked over, picking a shirt up in my mouth and walked behind a tree nearby to shift. Once I did I threw the shirt on over my shoulders. The shirt reached the top of my thigh. But I guess it would have to be good enough.
I walked over to Liam after grabbing the other shirt. Shaking him lightly, I woke him up and gave the shirt, he went behind a tree. The sounds of bones cracking hit my ears. He came out from behind the tree with the shirt on, almost reaching his knees.
"Jeez it's cold." He said.
"Yea, I know, but we only have to be like this for a little bit. Obviously we need to talk."
"Mhm."
"Ok, so her name is Kate she's a year younger than you. I don't know how she got here, we haven't talked about that yet."
"Wait, why not?" Liam demanded.
"It was cold Liam, she was scared, we both were tired. But anyway I'll ask her about that after I'm done talking to you. But, for now at least, I think she should travel with us. "
He sighed. "Really?"
"Yes, she needs someone to watch her, she's in terrible condition and she's young, younger than you, she can't be on her own."
"Ok, fine."
"Well it better be fine." I say in a joking tone. He gives me a halfhearted laugh in return.
"Ok well, I only got two shirts, soooo you gotta go shift and gimme that one back."
"Oh wait, why were you gone so long, and, you know, only got two shirts?" Liam asked, making a confused face at me.
"Oh, uhh, lets just say I ran into, a little trouble. It's not that important. But at least I know which way we won't go." I say, offering him a small smile. He nods his head and stands up.
"Ok, gimme a second and you can have the shirt back." He walked behind a tree and once again the sound of bones cracking hit my ears.
Soon after he came out from behind the tree holding the shirt in his mouth. He walked over to me. I took the shirt from his mouth. "Thank you." I say, he walks back over by a tree laying down a few yards from Kate.
A walk over to Kate slightly shaking her. "Hey Kate, wake up." I say quietly.
Her eyes shoot open and she jumps up. "Kate! It's just me calm down, hear," I say holding the shirt out to her. "I got a couple shirts can you shift and put this on?"
She nodded her head hesitantly after a few seconds of calming down. I smiled at her.
"You can go behind one of the trees around here."
She slowly took the shirt in her mouth and walked behind a tree.
For the forth time today I heard bones cracking. She came out wearing the light blue shirt.
"I-It's cold." She stuttered.
"I know, I know. We'll only have to stay like this for a little while while we talk. But at leasts it keeps us a little warmer then without anything right?"
She shyly nodded.
"Ok so first of, why were you out so late? And alone at that."
"I....I- I was run-running."
"Running from who."
"The b-bad men." She stuttered.
"Who are these bad men Kate? What did they do?"
"They.....T-they hurt me. K-k-killed my family. My p-pack. All. of them." She said, now in tears.
"Oh Kate I'm so sorry." I say walking up to her taking her in my arms.
After a few minutes of calming her down I continued.
"Kate...how'd you escape."
"They took me outside, t-then they started yelling, fighting. Didn't pay attention to me. A-and I ran."
"Kate, me and Liam are going south. Do...do you want to come with us?"
She looked up at me. "Really?"
I smiled. "Really."
She jumped up in my arms and hugged me tighter. "Thank you!"
I giggled. "Alright, now I'm cold, lets change before we get frost bite or something. And after we come back we're going to start moving South." I say the last sentence a little louder making sure Liam heard it.
There was so much more I wanted to ask her. Like how did they hurt here. How long ago was her packed killed. Why? She probably didn't even know why. I mean I wouldn't be surprised, she's six.
"Ok I will." She said walking behind the tree and shifting. She walked out with the shirt in her mouth again.
I took and and tied it around my waist, then went behind a tree a tied mine around my waist too. I shivered against the cold.
I hurriedly shifted and walked out. I let out out a little howl and started walking.
Liam, Kate and I started our journey south.
