That was the ad for the accursed game that her mind had so generously had been replaying for the past 30 minutes. Violette sat crossed legged near a well in the middle of the village, face resting on her right fist while her free hand strummed in impatience on her left knee, glaring in the distance and mumbling threateningly.
It was clear that she had transmigrated into another world. She had read many romance novels with the same old troupe to know the gist, however, never in a million years had she ever thought this would happen to her. “It was fantasy for crying out loud”. She growled out scaring a few villagers nearby but she didn’t pay them much mind.
Her head was pounding from when she had smacked her head on the well’s edge in hopes of returning back. Hey! You can’t blame her for that. Logically speaking, if there is a way ‘in’ there has to be a way ‘out’ and like any other sane person, the first thing she did was to find that way ‘out’. With a giant red bump adorning her forehead, she tried to think of any possible reason how this could have happened.
She groans in pain as she mumbles “Usually something like this happens when some Wizards or whatnot kidnaps uh I mean ‘summons’ someone from another world to combat some demon lord or something or when…” her fingers stops strumming and her gaze lowers “…or when someone dies and get reincarnated”.
So does that mean that she died? But how? Was it alcohol poisoning? She did drink a lot but that couldn’t be the case could it? Did she get electrocuted? Her computer was still on when she passed out, so maybe she got tangled in some wires. Or maybe she cracked her skull open, she did hear a loud thump sound before she blacked out. No, that can’t be it. If she really did die then what about her job, her friends, her family.
Oh great God in heaven, she could already see her picture on the news. A 25 year old woman found dead in her apartment building after drowning her woes in alcohol, getting electrocuted and smashing her head on her computer desk while playing a game she loathes all because of a bad break up that happened 7 months ago. Ugh what an embarrassing way to go. She never asked for this ‘new life’ mumbo jumbo. All things considered, she liked her life thank you very much.
Of all days she just had to get drunk on a Sunday and this crazy shit had to happen the very next day. She should have been at work right about now. That devil of a boss is going to chew her head off and spit it out like a piece of sour gum. She rose up with gusto, her fists clenched by her sides and looking up at the clear blue sky above with a fire burning in her red eyes. She needs to find a way back and she needs it pronto, maybe she just didn’t hit head hard enough.
“Eek”. Her sudden movement surprised the two kids nearby, causing one of them to drop the bucket in their hands. The bucket rolled towards her and stopped near her feet. She looked their way and they jumped in fear. A little boy, who had dropped the bucket, was hiding behind the slightly older girl as they both shook as the strange lady kept staring at them. The girl looked like she was about 10 years old and the boy might be 7 or 8.
‘Aw what adorable little kids. But they look scared. Of what? Of me? Nonsense’. The neighbourhood kids loved to play with her and she adored them too. With a gentle smile on her face she picked up the fallen bucket by her feet and approached the little ones. Kneeling down to be at eye level with them, she offered it back and asked “Hey there, what are you kids doing out here? Are you lost?”
The warm smile blew their initial fear away and they just stared at the beautiful giant in front of them. Violette tilted her head to the side, smile still in place, patiently waiting for a reply. “So pretty” the little boy said as he peeked from behind his sister. Violette let out a chuckle “Why thank you sweetie. Aren’t you a little charmer?”
The girl finally seems to snap out of her spell as a pink hue dusts her cheeks. “I-I am sorry miss, we just came to get some water from the well for our grandfather. He is sick you see but you seemed to be ah um in thought so…” The girl looked down, trying to hide her face from the older woman. “Oh I’m sorry I had a rough day today so I was a little grumpy. Did I scare you?” The girl shyly looked up before looking down again as she replied in a tiny voice “A little.”
Violette’s let out a closed eyed chuckle as she stood up. “Well as an apology let me help you with that and then later I can walk you guys home. Sound good?” The girl was sputtering and waving her hands frantically, trying to refuse but her words fell on deaf ears as the older woman took the other other two buckets and began to draw water from the well. “It’s alright. Besides, it’s going to be very heavy for just two kids to carry alone so let me help. Please I insist.”
Using a carrying yoke she balanced the two water filled buckets on one shoulder while holding the little boy's hand so that he doesn’t fall. The girl, who still hadn’t given up, refused to let go of the last bucket before Violette could take it and carried it herself.
As they walked in the direction of the siblings’ home, Violette asked them about their grandfather’s health. “Papa lost something and it made grandpa angry. So they got into an argument. Grandpa sprained his back a few days ago when he was fighting with papa.” The little girl said and will continued, stealing his sister’s thunder “But mommy said that the well at the centre of the village has magic in it that makes people get better. So we came to get the water for grandpa.” ‘That’s so sweet’.
As they walked side by side the little boy would ask questions like “Who are you? What’s your name? Why were you sitting near the well? Where are you from? Why did you come here? Are you lost? Why are your clothes so weird? Are you hungry” and many other harmless questions while Violette would answer them as best as she could.
“My name is Violette Edinburg. I come from a faraway land, in fact, I’m from another world entirely. For some unknown reason when I woke up this morning, I found myself sitting near that well. In a way you could say I’m lost. And that was a bit rude, my clothes aren’t weird they are fashionable and yes, I am a bit hungry.” The boy called William (Will for short) looked at Violette with sparkles in his round blue eyes while the girl named Samantha (Sam for short) rolled her eyes.
“You came from another world miss Wi-Weolit?” Violette began to laugh at the cute way he miss pronounced her name. Will puffed up his cheeks and looked away peeved at being laughed at. “Ah I’m sorry will. You were just so cute I couldn’t help myself.” Will kept his head turned. “Your name is too hard. It’s not my fault.” He huffed. “Yes, yes, it’s not your fault. Ah you can call me by my nickname if you like. It’s Bliss.”
Will looked her way and with his nose in the air, confidently said “Ok miss Bliss.” She felt like a cupid just shot an arrow through her wounded heart. ‘How can someone be so adorable? This has got to be a crime.’ She could just pinch his cheeks till there all puffy and red and smother him in smooches. If she had gotten married and had kids of her own then maybe, her children might have been as cute as these little angels.
She schooled her facial expression. She isn’t going to get all soggy because of that piece of shit anymore. She has other problems to worry about like getting home. “Aye what ya doin with em kids.” Startled they all stood in attention at the loud shout. An old man came rushing towards them while waving his cane in the air. “Tryna kidnap my brats in broad day light? Well not on my wat-” The old man tripped and fell right on his face.
Everyone looked like their soul just left their bodies at the sight of an old man taking a nasty tumble. “Sir!” “Grandpa!” They all shouted in unison as they rushed towards the fallen man. When they reached him Bliss placed the pots and the carrying yoke to the side and tried to help the man up. “Sir are you ok? Does anything hurt? Can you walk?” The old man swatted her hand away.
He picked up his cane and wacked her on the head. “Ow. Hey what was that for?” She asked with tears in her eyes. She was very respectful towards the elderly and they always treated her with kind smiles and lemon flavour candies not hit her with a wooden cane and look at her as she was garbage. “That was for tryna kidnap ma grandkids ya bloody paedophile.”
“What?! No sir, there has been a misunderstanding. It’s true that I like kids but not like that. Please believe me I’m not a creep. I was just trying to bring them home.” She tried to defend herself but the old man was having none of it as he quickly hoisted himself up and ready to swing his cane at her again when a loud ‘Crack’ made itself heard. Everything went quiet for a few seconds.
All the colour drained from his face before fainting. “Grandpa!” The kids began to shake their grandfather in hopes of getting him to wake up. ‘What a lovely day.’ Bliss thought sarcastically as she gazed worriedly at the elder who attacked her. The kids began to cry when their grandfather wouldn’t wake up. She carefully hoisted the small man up on her back and told the kids to lead the way home.
Will was crying the whole way screaming for his grandfather not to die while she would try to assure the seven year old that his grandfather will be ok. Sam ran ahead when they got close to their house. Upon reaching the small cottage she let out a sigh of relief. A woman rushed out of the cottage with Sam in toe. She came towards Bliss after examining the man on her back she quickly ushered her inside.
“Samantha hurry go get Gunther.” Sam ran out of the house to do as she was told. Bliss carefully laid the injured man on the bed. After a while Samantha and a man with a thick beard, which she presumed to be Gunther, arrived. The man quickly set to attend to the injured old man.
Bliss stayed in another room with the kids, trying to comfort them. Will and Sam were sniffling while Bliss gently brushed her hand through their hair and whispering assuring words. Will’s cheeks were puffy and red from crying and snot was running down his nose while Sam had tear in her eyes trying to be a brave big sister. Bliss couldn’t take it anymore and she engulfed the kids in a big hug. “It will be ok. Your Grandfather is a strong one and I should know, he hits pretty hard.”
Sam finally shed a few tears and hid her face in her bosom while will began to hiccup trying to stop his tears and failing. They stayed like that till they stopped crying. Then they heard Gunter leave the room “Thank you Gunther. Here take these for your trouble.” The woman handed him a few coins before he left. “Anytime, and don’t let that old goon out of the bed. He needs to rest, he’s not young anymore.”
“Will do.” The man raised his head in farewell and nodded towards Bliss and she nodded back. Will and Sam quickly surrounded their mother “Mommy how is grandpa? Did he wake up yet?” Will asked as he held onto his mother’s leg. “Yes sweetie he’s awake now. Grandpa hurt his back a little. He just needs to rest for a few days and he will be all better.”
The kids ran inside to meet their grandfather. Bliss let out a sigh of relief at seeing the old man awake. The mother looked her way and thanked her for helping her father. “It wasn’t much. Anyone would have done the same in my position.” She smiled as she tried to reassure the mother of two “But please how can I repay you for your kindness.” Then the old man suddenly shouted, startling everyone. “Repay? Repay er for what? For breakin ma back? If anythin she should be payin us.”
The old man glared daggers at her from across the room. How is him hurting his back, from attacking her if one might add, her fault. Her left eye twitched. Her head was still sore from the hit she suffered from this crazy old man and it’s getting worse by the minuet.
“Pa please.” She chided. “Please don’t mind him. We are very thankful for your help. If it wasn’t for you we don’t know what might have happened.” “I tell ya what woulda happened. I woulda already been through an’ outta that damn forest by now. Because of this weirdo here now I can’t even get up.” That was a bit harsh. She did feel a little responsible for the whole ordeal but still.
“You there, silver pants, it’s all yar fault. Arn't chya gonna apologize.” ‘Silver pants?!’ Her irritation resurfaced but none the less she bowed her head in apology. “I am terribly sorry sir. It was not my attention to cause you any harm. Please allow me to compensate you for all the trouble.” The old man smirked “That’s more like it. But ya look like a bum so ya probably got no money.” Her eye twitched again. “Yar silver pants probably hadn’t even done any hard labour either.” It twitched again.
He closed his eyes thinking. “How about this silver pants? Ya go to the forest to the east of here and bring me ma amulet that my good for nothin son in law, lost a few days ago and I let you off with a few taps on the shoulder.” ‘So your still planning on hitting me huh you old goose.’ “Pa please you know that the forest to the east is dangerous. Just let it go, we will hire some able men to get it.”
The old man brushed his daughter off and tauntingly smirked at Bliss “What? A silver pants like ya can’t even do this.” She grinded her teeth and straightened her back. She was pretty tall at her full height and looked the old man dead in the eyes. “I’ll get your amulet for you sir. Count on it.” The old man hummed in approval, his daughter deflated and shook her head left to right while the kids looked confused.
