Hannah's face is so hot that she thinks she could cook an egg on her forehead. She knew it was a bad idea to come down here! When she saw where Neil was headed she had tried to get the others to go back but no one listened. Now she might get fired! She could be living off the street by the end of the week. She…she feels Scott grab her hand and squeeze slightly, causing her to lose her train of thought.
“Scott? Hannah” someone says and she’s a friend of Scott’s Luke staring at confused. “What the fuck are you two doing down here?”
“Could ask you the same thing, bud,” Scott laughs.
Luke sighs, pointing over his shoulder slightly, “got stuck doing overnight.”
Scott and Hannah both frown. Overnight? Here? There usually isn’t any overnight security that stays down here. Patrol is done but no one stays especially that long.
“It’s because of the body isn’t it?!” Neil screams suddenly, pulling free of Hannah’s grasp, “The coffin! Right?!”
“How do you know about the coffin?” Luke asks, his eyebrows raised so high they almost melt into his hairline.
“I was down here earlier, and I saw it.”
“That’s what you were going to show us?” Hannah asks aghast. She didn’t know how she felt know there was a dead body on the ship. It was very creepy to think that a deep body is so close to her. She especially doesn’t want to see the body, and not seeing the coffin isn’t going to keep her up at night either.
“Cool,” she can hear Scott mumble making her roll her eyes. Boys. They’re all the same deep down, sex, violence, and dead bodies.
“Can we see it?” Scott asks.
Luke sighs, “No! You are all going to get me fired by just being down here. I’m supposed to make sure no unauthorised people see the thing. If Ed finds out he’s going to fire me and you two as well.”
Hannah gasps. She grabs Neil again by the back of his shirt and Scott’s hand, and begins dragging them both toward the door, “Sorry Luke. We’re going.”
“Thanks Hannah,” Luke replies before looking toward the others, “You four as well...GET OUT!”
“What was that?” Neil asks pulling free of Hannah’s grasp.
“What’s what?” Scott asks.
“Don’t you hear it?”
Neil begins to walk toward the adjacent room, and Hannah makes a lunge for him missing by a mile.
“Come back!” she hisses but he’s already in the other room. “Shit! N…”
She stops talking because she can hear something now. It sounds like a banging.
“Do you hear that?” she asks Scott. He nods, and the two of them run into the other room, followed by the others.
“What’s going on?” the blonde girl asks, her voice shaking slightly. “Is the coffin making that noise?”
“Of course not,” Luke snaps, but he doesn’t sound like he believes it.
“Then what is?” the blonde boy asks.
No one answers.
Hannah swallows hard, “I think we should go.”
No one as much as looks at her in response, as they are all too busy staring at the coffin which is now starting to rumble.
“Um, guys,” Hannah tries again, her voice starting to waver with fright, “I really think we should go.”
Again no one listens to her. The coffin is so loud now that she is not even that surprised. What could be making that noise? A part of her knows the answer but the other part keeps telling her to grow up.
Luke is right in front of the coffin now, and shaking so hard Hannah’s surprised he can even hold the flashlight in his hand.
“Wh…who…who’s there?” Luke calls out. “I…I’ve got a gun.”
The rumbling stops now.
“BRAINS!!!” a moaning sound cries from within causing everyone to jump. “BRAINS!!! Give me brains! Big juicy brains…with…with…uh, brain sauce…”
Hannah frowns. She knows that voice. She looks over at her brother who she notices is trying-and not succeeding- at holding back laughter. Neil, she also notices, is beside the box. Hannah makes her way over, and grabs him by the arm.
“BRAINS!!!!”
Suddenly she is able to put everything together. Her brother being with friends earlier, Neil wanting to show her and Scott the coffin- insisting on it in fact- and then her knowing the voice.
“PETER!” she yells walking over to the box and yanking the lid up. Inside the box is a dark skinned looking women, who was probably her late eighties. She’s small, and short, and has short brown curls on her head. Beside that is a young boy named Peter Chow. It’s her brothers’ best friend, whose mother works with her in the galley. The two boys are always getting in trouble. In fact its getting to the point where the two boys aren’t even allowed to be alone together or something will get broken, or hurt, or just in trouble. It’s getting really tiring cause it seems every day Hannah’s getting called to one part of the ship or the other to haul her brother back to their cabin. She doesn’t remember her parents having this kind of trouble with him.
“What the fuck!” Luke shoves past her and yanks Peter to his feet.
“Told you we’d get them,” Peter tells Neil laughing even though Luke has a death grip on his shoulder.
“I also told you that my sister would ruin it,” Neil says laughing as well.
Hannah is livid. Her brother has done a lot of shit in his young life but never anything like this. Nothing that could seriously jeopardise her job!
“I should kick you two off the boat for this!”
This shuts the boys up.
“Sorry Luke,” Neil says looking at his converse.
“Yea,” Peter echoes, “We were just playing a joke.”
“You are not supposed to be down here!” Luke screams. “Why does everyone think they’re allowed down here?!”
“There is no sign,” Neil says with a small shrug, “so we thought it couldn’t be that bad. You know, if were a big deal you’d think there’d be a ‘keep out’ sign or something.”
“Well it is a big deal,” Luke says. “Don’t let me catch you down here again.”
“So does that mean we’re not in trouble?” Peter asks hopeful.
“No, you’re in trouble,” Hannah says. “I’m telling your mother, Peter. And you, Neil, are grounded for a decade!”
“Ah Hannah!” Both boys groan in unison.
“Don’t ‘ah Hannah’ me!”
“You also get deck cleaning duty,” Luke continues with a smirk, “I could use a few nights off.”
The boys groan again only louder and longer. Hopefully, Hannah thinks to herself, now they’ll think twice before playing stupid pranks again, or at least stop getting caught!
