Opening the door, I took in Wyatt’s face.
“Food you say?” I nod, “Hope you’ve cooked enough.”
His shocked expression lasted a second at my normal appearance before he regained his composure and cracked a smile.
“Good to see you up and about. When Alex carried you to your room, I wasn’t expecting you to wake up any time soon.”
Wait, what? Before I had a chance to question that, Wyatt had already turned around and started walking. Feeling my family come up behind me, I spoke without turning around.
“Alexander carried me?”
At the affirmative grunts, I stood there stunned for a second, before turning around in shock at Hawk’s next sentence.
“He refused to leave until you woke.”
I didn’t know how to process that information so I just followed after Wyatt and decided to ignore it. As we walked along I felt the stares from the shifters. Taking sidelong glances, I made note of them all as Flint came closer to me.
“How are you feeling?”
I shrugged.
“All things considered. Not too bad.” I turned to face him. “Bloody hungry though.”
He smiled, once again accepting the change in subject. We continued following Wyatt until we reached a large set of double doors. Turning around to face us, he smiled.
“You’ll be dining at the table with the Leo and myself tonight.”
With that, he opened the doors and walked through. The main dining room was massive and filled with rows and rows of tables. Most of the seats were already taken apart from one table at the end of the room that sat only Alexander and Laurie. Wyatt quickly meandered his way through the different tables, leading us as the shifters stared unabashedly with curiosity. I lead with my family following behind me.
As we reached the table, I noticed that Alexander who was sat at the end of the table was talking to Laurie who was sat two seats away to his right. Digging through my memory, that would make Laurie and Wyatt the Betas or second in commands to Alexander. Leading us to our seats, Wyatt sat me next to Alexander’s left, with Clay and Hawk to my left whilst my parents and Flint were sat opposite next to Laurie and Wyatt. Leaning forward slightly, Alexander spoke to me, his expression mischievous.
“Our fainting damsel awakens.” A smirk graced his lips as he teased me.
“Don’t make me flick you again.”
Alexander just chuckled and leant back in his chair again. Something has changed about him. He seemed much more relaxed then he was earlier in his office when he was demanding answers from us. I stared at him trying to figure out what it was before I heard a low thump from opposite me. Turning my head, I saw that my mum was patting my dad’s shoulder condescendingly whilst he had his head in his hands.
“She flicked the Leo.”
“She is your daughter, Cormac. If I recall correctly, you punched Michael in your youth.” My mother stated like it was an ordinary thing to punch one of the most powerful beings on the planet.
As my mother chuckled at my father’s despair, I nudged Hawk next to me with a smirk on my face. Having understood what I wanted, Hawk told the table in a monotone voice.
“In the interest of precision, she flicked his nose.”
There was a moment when the whole table looked at my dad as he banged his head against the table before we all burst out laughing. As I was wiping the tears from my eyes from laughing so hard, I saw Flint tense across the table and felt someone walking up to me. Turning to see that it was the Barbie shifter from before with an arrogant sneer on her face, I waited to see what her problem was going to be.
“You’re in my seat, angel.” She spat the word angel like it was a curse word. In the background I heard Laurie say ‘here we go again’. Considering she was interrupting us and was causing a scene that made all the other shifters watch, I decided to fuck with her a bit. I furrowed my brow in confusion, then proceeded to look all around my chair before turning back to her.
“I don’t see Barbie written anywhere on my seat, you must be mistaken.” Turning back around, I heard her gasp in outrage whilst everyone else in the room was trying to hide their smiles and laughter.
“Listen to me, angel, that is my seat. Now move.”
It was then that it clicked. I was sat to the Leo’s left, I doubt she would have had an issue if it had been one of my brother’s in this seat. Sighing and turning back around to face her, I held her stare as I spoke.
“Hawk, basic information available on the Leo of the North American Pack.”
From behind me Hawk, started spouting information like I knew he would.
“The Leo of the North American Pack is Alexander Bakas. 30 years old. Only son to Christopher and Arianna Bakas, former Leos to the North American Pack. Parents now deceased, murdered. Total challenges to leadership, five. Challenges won, five. Mated status, unmated with no potentials noted. Shifters under rule, 183. Beta is Wyatt Smith mated to Laurie –”
“Hawk, I said basic but thank you. One more question, what’s the importance of the seating arrangements near the Alpha of a Pack, in this case a Leo.” I interrupted him or we would be there all day.
“The Leo sits at the head of the table as the most powerful shifter, the Beta or Beta couple sit to his right as his second in commands. The seat to the left of the Alpha is reserved for his mate. In situations where the Leo is unmated then the seat is reserved for guests.” With that, Hawk finished his sentence and fell silent.
Everyone looked shocked at the amount of information we had at our disposable or more correctly, the information Hawk had at his disposal. He really was a walking, talking library.
“Hmm.” I faked a look of confusion again. “Currently unmated with no potentials. Unless we need to update our information?” I aimed the last part at Alexander with a raised eyebrow.
“No. Nothing to update.” He smirked, seeming to enjoy the situation as the shifter behind me gasped once more in outrage.
“Well, then honey, you sure ain’t his mate and I’m a guest so this ain’t your seat.”
As I was turning around to face the others once more, I saw her reaching toward me, claws unsheathed.
