I exit the homebase and begin my descent of the stairs.
Thankfully the walk down the stairs is so pleasant when compared to the arduous journey up them.
I manage to get down the stairs quite fast at a speed I believe rivals the P.E. coaches' grandmother. I walk past very few students on my way to computer science.
This is going to be a quiet lesson thank the goddess of ANTIFA. Hatsune Miku.
Room G.15 I read on the sign entering the room I was in merely an hour ago but for a new purpose. Coding.
“Hello John” Miss Larson says when she sees me.
“Hello Miss” I respond with genuine happiness in my voice. I sit down at my computer and look around at my nine fellow students.
I love the quiet of the computer science classroom, actual peace. Also, fulfilling the programmer trans girl stereo type.
“Alright class today we’ll be just practicing coding so you can just relax and go through some challenges” Miss says. “If you need help just ask”. I walk over and take my corner seat logging on to the computer.
Hahhhhh time to just chillax and code.
When the computer finally logs on, I open up the coding software we use: snake.
Ah yes, the cheap and crappy coding software my school uses. But what can be afforded, I guess. Let's just hope that no one wi-.
“Miss my snake wont load can I move to the other computer?” A student says.
-ll have difficulties... Well then, I guess it always happens to one this time it was Amir.
“Yes Amir, you may” Miss replies. Amir then moves on and logs on to a different computer. “God maybe one day this school can get a budget for computers that work” Miss sighs.
I feel sorry for her, she works so hard but nothing works for her. I hope one day it will get easier for her or at least her life outside of school is amazing.
I put my head down and start typing out code for the challenge.
357/563 snake tasks complete thus far. I love coding it’s a fun hobby but I don’t know about a career in it. I mean maybe but I will decide later, I guess.
“Hey, hey John, can I have help with this?” I hear someone say a chair or two over. I turn to see who it is.
Oh, it’s Joseph. I mean I should have guessed, he’s good at coding but does require help sometimes.
“Sure” I reply wheeling my chair over to behind him.
I always like to help; it costs nothing and I enjoy coding.
I look over his code “So what seems to be the problem?” I say looking over his code.
“When I my run code this happens” He says. His code goes through easily for an input or two then some red text says: ERROR NO ‘Choce’ GIVEN VALUE IN LINE 10.
So that is the error.
“Okay so you see your if command in line ten read out the actual value of it” I say pointing at line 14. He reads it.
“Oh, I feel stupid now” He says adding the ‘i’ so it matches his variable.
“Don’t, everyone makes those mistakes we’re coders we can code but sometimes remembering to spell a word slip.” I say trying to reassure him. “I mean we may be smarter than most but we can't be expected to be perfect you know”.
“Thanks John” Joseph says, “that makes me feel better”.
“Anytime” I reply wheeling back over to my computer.
God, I love helping but my name getting said all the time is a major downside. Helping makes me feel that I actually have people who care about me. Which I know I fucking don’t, I’m just the rubbish no one wants there. Helping helps me repress that though makes me feel people actually like me around here.
I sit back at my desk just typing in more code.
50 more minutes to go.
“Class I have an announcement to make” miss says after half an hour coding. “So, I got an email. Are there any student council members in here?” I raise my hand. “Oh, so just you John, well there is a student council meeting during PHSE, you’ll need to go to the language homebase.” she says looking directly at me. “Got it?”
“Got it” I reply. Miss goes back to her desk and I go back to coding.
Well, that sounds boring. Awwwww and I miss being in a PHSE lesson wit Miss too. Well at least now I have 358/563 python tasks done.
I kind of zone out for the next 10 or so minutes. Just existing doing a little code. Then my thoughts of things get interrupted.
“Alright class quizizz time!” Miss exclaims. This gets the class excited as they all start opening google then hastily quizizz as I do too.
Quizizz time in computer science is my favourite part in any lesson. It actually feels, fun, I guess.
We all quickly get on and enter the code miss tells us we enter silly, but appropriate, names and the quiz begin. I answer questions in a neck and neck race with Amir, there are 25 questions. Its neck and neck for a while then I get a times two and take a lead. Amir in his recklessness haste makes a misclick luckily his streak was saved by a streak saver. I get through every question ahead of me with ease. Someone gets a power play a 50% score boost on everyone's questions. This increases stakes as everyone rushes to capitalize on this. The rush is real I get to question 20 but the power up I get is just a rubber which I rarely use. While Amir gets a double jeopardy and gets the next answer right bringing him neck and neck to me yet again. Adrenaline flairs as we near the finish we answer question 25 at the same time and I’m in first. Amir gets a redemption question a second shot at the question he failed but without time bonus. This brings his score to just below me. It was a close match but I retained victory. I claimed victory under the nickname: snek.
See this is fun you can’t have in other places.
The class packs up and we stand waiting the final five minutes to the bell. The bell finally rings and we begin to walk out.
Now it’s break time. I get to read now I guess I'm anxious about what this meeting will be about but it is reading time so fuck it I'm sure I'll end up getting a minor role in whatever it is.
