He had just gotten off of the six hour long bus ride to get on another bus. He sighed, looking down at his ticket. He had a few minutes to waste, the bus left at 12:30 and it was only 11:45. He decided to go to a nearby cafe to get a coffee and use their free internet. His phone buzzed in his back pocket.
"Hey Nina." He said, welcoming his older sister's phone call.
"Did you make it there ok? Are you at your hotel? Is it nice? It looked nice in the photos. I sent you those right?" She was rambling, it was a special talent of hers. If you didn't stop her she would go on and on forever.
He cut her off, "Nina, I haven't even gotten on the bus to New York yet. Which obviously means i'm not in Manhattan." He sighed, 'If her head wasn't on her shoulders she would forget about that too.' He thought silently to himself, letting out a small smile.
"Oh! Right, I'm sorry Sammie, I'm losing my shit. I really miss you." She pouted. They were all each other had, their parents had died when they were young, making it so they had to go live with their grandparents. They soon passed too. The grief had bonded the two closer together. After all their close relatives were either dead or under the radar, they were sent into foster care. As soon as Nina became 18 she got an apartment and they had lived together ever since.
"It's fine Nina, I miss you too." Samuel chuckled, though his sister was five years older than him, he always felt like the older sibling.
"Samuel?" The barista called through the tiny cafe.
"I gotta go Nina bye."
"Bye Sammie!" His sister called over the phone, he pulled the small device away from his ear and hung up.
"Here!" He got up to retrieve his coffee.
"That will be $4.08! Can I get you anything else?" The barista said through a perky smile.
"A croissant, please." He pulled out a twenty and gave it to the woman, "Keep the change." She smiled and turned to go get his croissant. Sam turned and leaned on the counter, waiting for his croissant.
"Here you are sir! And there is an extra croissant in there!" She smiled, "Have a nice day!"
He thanked her and left the cafe. He walked to a nearby park and sat to drink his coffee and eat his croissant. The air was warm, he shut his eyes to take it in, back home it was always rainy. He checked his phone for the time, 'What can I do in 23 minutes..' The thought drowsily ran around his mind.
He got up and threw away his garbage, he grabbed his luggage and continued down the park's path. No one was coming or going the way he was, it was nice. He could walk in his own solidarity. He smiled to himself, admiring the foliage surrounding the path.
Just then there was a noise, 'The hell?' Sam looked around, he didn't see anyone. The noise came again, someone was moaning.
"Keep it down!" Another voice came, "We can get caught. It would be all your fault." The voice now chuckled.
"Yes, just please. Continue." A second voice came, Samuel now knew what was going on. Someone was having sex in the bushes, but both voices were male.
Sam popped his head around and gasped, "You're in a public place! Children could be walking here!" He shouted. The men yelped.
One was spread out half naked on a picnic table and the other was.. Sam shook his head, "Get decent! I could call the police. I should call the police." He huffed angrily.
The men walked out onto the path, Samuel looked at them, as if he were scolding children. The one that was on the table looked really nervous, the one that had been full dressed had a annoyed look on his face, "You are both fucked up. Children could have seen you! Lucky I caught you and no one but me had to see that, horrific, incident." He crossed his arms, "I wont be calling the police. But never do that again in a public place." And with that he turned oh his heel and stormed off.
"People these days." Samuel looked at his phone, his alarm started going off for 12:15. "Ill make it back in 15 minutes." He muttered to himself.
As he stood in the line for the bus he tugged on a hoodie, it didn't quite fit right, but it still looked good and it was comfortable. He tugged his phone out of his pocket. He unlocked it and opened up messages, 'Three missed calls from Aubrey, One missed call from Nina, and a text from Nina. God will these women leave me alone for a bit?' Samuel turned his phone off and returned it to his pocket, this was going to be a long ride.
Samuel woke up and stretched, he had ended up taking a nap on the way there and it was almost time to get off. He slowly gathered his stuff, awning quietly. He had luckily gotten a seat alone in the far back.
"All passengers, please exit the bus. If you are riding to down town Manhattan, please stay boarded." A third of the passengers sat back down. Samuel got up and grabbed his luggage.
A small child, looking to be around the age of four, was staring at him. He nervously looked away, wiping a strand of brown hair out of his eye. Every moved forward at a slow pace, finally Sam got off of the bus. He walked off to the right to stretch more. 'Finally, after over 7 hours of travel, im here' He smiled.
He had gotten a taxi to the hotel he had booked himself. He had a room here for a month. He looked up the height of the building. It was tall, and nice. Just like the pictures. Nina had sent him some of multiple hotels, he had chosen this one because out of all of the ones she had shown him, It was the nicest. It had rang up to his expectations.
He walked inside and over to the receptionist to get his key. "Hello. Im Samuel, Samuel Davis." He smiled, "Im booked here in a room for a month?"
The receptionist nodded and started to type on the computer in front of her, "Spell your name for me please, sir."
"S a m u e l D a v i s." He looked over to his right, then back at the woman in front of him.
"Your right here! Your in 23, its the second to last floor." She smiled and handed him his key.
"Thank you Miss." He took the key and went over to the elevator, calling it to floor one.
He gt in and hit the 23 button, he waited for the door to close and for the elevator to start heading up.
The doors opened slowly, it showed a small hallway and a door at the end, with the number 23 on the front, he walked forward and unlocked it. The double door opened into a beautiful house, tall ceilings, beautiful furniture and an amazing open layout. He dropped his luggage and flopped onto the couch.
Samuel woke up the next morning to his alarm going off in his ear, "Shut up! Im awake." he mumbled groggily. Ge grabbed his phone and turned off his alarm.
Slowly he got up from his couch, now that he was sitting upright he could get his brain working. He rubbed his eyes sheepishly. He was now standing and walking around trying to find the bathroom. It was to the left of the kitchen.
He showered and changed listing to hip-hop as he got ready for his first day at his new job. He slowly tucked his shirt into his new navy blue dress pants. He slicked back his hair, other than the incident in the park yesterday, this was turning out pretty well.
He grabbed his stuff, putting his phone and key in his pocket, locking the door as he left. He walked up and called the elevator to the 23 floor, he leaned against the wall as he waited, going through missed texts from his ex. He sighed and boarded the elevator. It went up another floor before descending down again.
Sam didn't care enough to look over at the person that had just gotten in and had decided to text his ex instead. He typed up a quick message, and once he finished he read it over in his head once or twice, 'Dear Aubrey. Im sorry that your going through rough times, but you broke up with me. Please Aubrey stop texting me. Im sorry.' After his fifth time reading it he sent it and put his phone away.
The elevator door crept open and he got out making his way to the doors. He waved to the receptionist, it was the same one from yesterday. She smiled and waved back.
Once he got outside he looked for a taxi, he waited for a couple of minutes. Finally one stopped, he told the driver his destination, and they left the building.
"So, do you have family here?" The driver said looking in the rear view mirror for a second before returning his eyes to the road.
Samuel shook his head, "No, I do not. You sir?"
"Yeah, a wife and two kids." He smiled.
"Very nice. If sure there great." Samuel looked out his window.
"Yeah, oh! This is your stop." The man put the car in park.
Sam pulled out a hundred and gave it to the driver, "Have a nice day sir." Samuel smiled and got out of the car. He hear the man yell thank you before leaving to find more customers.
'This is it.' Samuel thought to himself. He entered the building, a sweet looking woman sat behind the from counter on the phone.
"Mhm, mhm. Yes sir. Mhm! Ok, yep." She saw Sam and rolled her eyes, Sam chuckled. "Will do sir, yep. Ok, bye!" She hung up, "Hello! How may I help you today?" She smiled.
"Im here for the assistant position."
"Ok! Over there go up to floor eight, then-" She cut herself off. "Ill just take you! One second." She dialed a number on her phone, "Tell Mr.Sutton he has someone meeting him and that we are leaving to get up there now. Mhm, bye!" She hung up again, "Ok! Follow me!" She had a big smile on her face as she led him into the elevator and to the eighth floor.
"Thank you." Sam chuckled.
"Oh, its no problem. When your in there, dont get scare. He can be a little.. aggressive sometimes." She rolled her eyes and the elevator binged. "Ok! Right over here!" He led him to a large double door. "Good luck." She smiled and Samuel walked into the office.
The door shut behind him and he was met with the back of someones head, he coughed and stepped forward. "Hello sir." The man spun around in his chair. "You!? What!?" Samuel gasped, this was the man from yesterday, the one in the park, that was doing thing to the other man.
"What?" He said in a harsh tone as he stood up.
"You were the person I caught fucking someone in the park yesterday!" Sam gulped, 'How could this be the person I was trying to work for?' He looked down.
"Oh. Yes, well im very sorry about that. I hope this wont affect our working, because your hired." The man said smiling.
Sam looked up, "Really?"
The man nodded. Samuel squealed like a small child receiving candy.
"Thank you! It wont!" Sam ran up and hugged the man, he immediately let go and backed away, "I didn't- Im sorry.." He gulped.
The man smiled, "Ayden Sutton."
