I didn’t wake up until late the next day. It was almost dinner by the time I woke up. As Daisy said it would, my back hurt quite a bit. It hurt to even move. I didn’t want to get up at all, but I was starving and had to use the washroom. I was going to have to tough it out and make the trip down to the washroom and kitchen. With a great amount of effort, I pulled myself out of bed. It took even more effort to look towards the wall I had bled all over.
“Oh my god…” I was shocked. Instead of the mess it was yesterday, it was all cleaned up. Not only that, but the drawings had been taken down and replaced with one big painting on the wall. It was definitely Daisy’s doing. I recognized the style. She was in no way an artist, but she had some skill. The painting was of us chilling out together in the grass with a saying overtop about how she’ll always be near even if we’re far apart. Seeing it made me tear up. Daisy did so much for me it was unbelievable. Even if it wasn’t my original mural, the new one still made me feel at home.
I added thanking Daisy to my list of things to do while I was up and out of bed. I pulled myself out of bed, and headed to the washroom. After that, I headed to the kitchen to grab something quick to eat. My back was aching horribly at this point, so I just wanted something quick.
“Oh!” Daisy walked into the kitchen. “You’re up! How’s your back?”
“It’s hurting, but not too bad.” I sighed.
“Why don’t you sit down and I’ll make you something to eat?” Daisy offered. “I imagine you’re pretty hungry.”
“Yea.” I laughed a bit. I took a seat at the dinner table and watched Daisy make dinner.
“Is mac and cheese good?”
“Totally fine by me.”
“Perfect, cuz’ I’ve been craving it.” Daisy laughed.
I laughed a bit. I learned I had to be careful laughing because that hurt my back too.
“Oh, I saw the mural you did in my room.” I said. “It looks amazing.”
“You like it?” Daisy looked back at me with a smile.
“Of course I do.” I smiled. “Thanks for doing it. I really appreciate it.”
“Not a problem.” She hummed.
“I see you’re awake.” Mum walked into the kitchen. She didn’t look happy. She gave me an ice cold glare. I immediately went quiet and started sweating.
“Leave him alone.” Daisy glared at her.
“I didn’t even insult him.” Mum rolled her eyes as she went to make herself some coffee. There was an awkward silence for a bit. All I could hear was the coffee maker going and Daisy making mac and cheese. Once Mum made her coffee, she sat at the table next to me and sipped it obnoxiously loud. I was just waiting for the moment she would start telling me off.
“How’s your back?” Mum asked with the least bit of emotion. Both Daisy and I were taken aback. She never asked stuff like that!
“It’s fine.” I muttered.
“He’s in a lot of pain.” Daisy corrected me.
“I don’t know who to believe.” Mum said.
“Daisy’s right.” I mumbled. “It hurts.”
“Ah.” Mum took another loud sip of her coffee. “I can imagine it does.”
There was another awkward silence. My anxiety was skyrocketing from being near Mum. I couldn’t handle it and decided to leave.
“I’m gonna go to my room.” I said quietly. “My, uh, back is hurting.”
“...Wait.” Mum stopped me.
I looked over at her. I was confused as to why she wanted me to stay.
“Look. I realize I got carried away last night.” Mum admitted. “I shouldn’t have hit you that hard. Or that many times for that matter. I’m sorry.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Mum apologizing?? What??
“Uh… Apology accepted?” I said in shock.
“You make it sound like a question.” Mum raised a brow.
“Sorry, I don’t know how to react.” I mumbled.
“That’s fair I guess.” Mum sighed. “Anywho. Because of your back, I’ll let you relax for the next week.”
“He’s gonna need more than that.” Daisy pointed out. “Some of those cuts were so deep he needed stitches, you know.”
“Oh.” Mum looked surprised to hear that one. “I… I didn’t know that. Where did you get the stitches done?”
“I did them.” Daisy said.
“She’s a natural at this stuff.” I added.
Mum didn’t seem to know how to react. I guess she didn’t realize how deep the wounds she caused really went.
“He’s gonna need 2 weeks at least.” Daisy stated. “Depending if things keep clean, and if he doesn’t get pushed too much.”
“Alright, fine.” Mum said. “However long it takes to heal, you can relax. And if you need any help with anything, just let someone know.”
I nodded. “I’m gonna go back to my room.”
“Your room is gonna need cleaned up.” Mum said. “I don’t need blood stains on the wall.”
“It’s already cleaned.” Daisy said as I struggled to stand up from the chair. Daisy saw me struggling and came to help me up. “I cleaned it last night.”
“Hm.” Mum sipped more of her coffee. “Alright. Good.”
Daisy helped me back to my room. I was so happy to be able to lay down again. Laying down was the least painful position by far.
“Mum seemed to be in a weird mood, huh?” I said.
“I think she feels bad.” Daisy said. “I don’t think she meant to hurt you like that.”
“Maybe.” I mumbled. “I don’t know. It’s hard for me to want to believe that.”
“I know. I wouldn’t even want to be near her after what she did to you. You’re a lot stronger than I would’ve been. I would’ve hid in my room for quite a while. You actually had the guts to talk to her again.”
“I suppose…”
“At least she’s being nice to you.” Daisy said. “If she gave you a hard time I would lose my shit.”
I laughed a bit.
“Alright, well, dinner will be done soon.” Daisy said as she left for the kitchen. “I’ll be right back.”
Daisy went to finish dinner. I just laid back and tried to not to let my back pain get to me. Laying in certain angles was more painful because it meant I was laying directly on the wound. I had just found a good position when Mum popped into my room. She took a look at the mural Daisy did for me and smiled a bit.
“She did a good job on that.” Mum said.
“I know right.” I said. Even though she was smiling and seemed to be in my room with good intentions, I was anxious. She scared me. I didn’t want to face her anger like that again.
She nodded before leaving and heading back to the kitchen. Daisy showed up not too long after with a big bowl of mac and cheese for her and I.
“Dinner’s ready!” She smiled. “Hopefully it turned out ok.”
“Oh come on. Everything you cook is good.”
“I don’t know about that.” Daisy giggled as she started eating her dinner.
“It’s really good.” I smiled after taking a bite. “Now what was that about not being a good cook?”
“Oh shush.” She laughed.
