Jin Wei is already a powerful transmigrator so even without the help of the system he can already match the status of the protagonist.
However, he was assigned in a low-lying role, so he should not do any necessary stuff to get noticed. Even while his actions won't have any effect on the plotline, he could nonetheless have an influence on how individuals interact around the world.
After all, you still need that one small grain of sand to create a mountain.
Furthermore, mob characters are still characters of the story. Though nameless, they still take part in the mechanism running within the dimension. They are the gears of the machine that wasn’t visible but necessary in order for the mechanism to work. Because he is a figure who shouldn't exist, he ought to try to impose as little impression as possible.
"After meeting his teacher, what would happen to him?" Jin Wei probed.
「The protagonist will follow his master to a prestigious magic school. There, the protagonist will face challenges as a student, as well as the truth behind his true origin.」
If the regular course of events continues, the instructor will act as the mentor who shapes the main character into a model citizen. And owing to Laurem's aptitude, he may effortlessly transcend his limitations and rise to prominence.
Of course, such an event won't go off without a hitch. Laurem will undoubtedly encounter adversaries throughout his term at the academy given that he is the main protagonist. With his obscure and primitive origins, there should be a lot of people mocking him and wishing him ill luck.
That doesn't interest Jin Wei. Laurem, despite being the protagonist, is a stranger to him. Additionally, Jin Wei is a stranger in Laurem's eyes. If there are any grounds for sympathy at all, it would be Laurem's unfortunate beginnings.
「The protagonist will go through this and that and at the age of eighteen will go into the domain of expertise. He'll begin receiving the finest of the greatest from fate and develop into the figure that everyone admires and covets.」
“That quick?”
「New difficulties will present themselves that revolve on his heritage. At the designated moment, his body's mysteries will be disclosed.」
Jin Wei remembered Laurem’s unfortunate mother.
"Assuming the usual trope, that high-ranking demon will evolve as the next Demon King?”
System 777 popped out a holographic party popper to congratulate Jin Wei on his correct answer. It spent a considerable amount of time flying over Jin Wei's head to scatter the confetti before settling on Jin Wei's unkempt hair. The animation of the hologram gradually thinned out then is gone after a few seconds.
「That is the final stage of the story. Due to racial intolerance, his heritage made many people despise him.」
Man versus himself is one of the known tropes employed in literature and usually utilized as an ending conflict in stories addressing self-doubt and moral struggle. Laurem’s demon identity is always a hidden bomb all through out the story.
“Is it a happy ending?”
「Yes.」The system answered in affirmative. [It is a stallion story, after all. He will marry once… twice… thrice … then will bear children that would give rise to a generation of geniuses. The happily ever after theme will play out.]
"En. So heroic, so inspiring," Jin Wei applauded. "But it seems to be lacking.”
He thought for a long time then asked, “Why is there no element of revenge here?"
「There is.」 System 777 pointed out.
「Since the protagonist is a demon, it is in their nature to seek retribution for injustices committed against them. He received the worst treatment possible, which he recorded in his heart. As soon as he gained fame and power, he did not hesitate on giving those who tormented him and his mother punishments.」
“Reasonable,” Jin Wei accepted the notion easily. “It would be weird if nothing happened to these little villains.”
Jin Wei unsteadily slumped aside till he formed a strange angle. System 777 rose from its position and observed Jin Wei lounging down on the edge of the roof, seemingly unconcerned about falling. It even caught Jin Wei yawning and attempting to close his eyes.
Don't tell me that he is planning to sleep?
"Hey, what would be my role in this story… or do I even have one?" Jin Wei asked after a minute of silence.
「Host is just a random character. If not because of the tasks, it's okay to have no interaction with the protagonist.」
Jin Wei shrugged. The moment he became a mob character, he also stopped receiving missions.
Missions are given to those transmigrators that have a role that can change the fate of the story. Examples of these are the protagonists, male leads, cannon fodders, etc. While mob characters are only given tasks that will never affect the story's fate no matter what.
Though, the tasks are not the usual ones that needed supervision. It has no time limit and can be done in a single day if no additional instructions are given. Most of the tasks given are like 'greeting the male lead good morning a hundred times', or 'bumping to the protagonist fifty times'.
After they're done, they are free to do whatever they want.
System 777 showed Jin Wei his tasks for this world. Seeing the phrases and numbers, Jin Wei could tell that his involvement in this world only takes part in the initial arc.
「Tasks - Note: A hundred percent completion is needed for the host to gain transfer to the next world. Unable to meet the minimum completion of a hundred percent will cause complete annihilation. The system will also undergo reformatting.」
「Tasks to be done:
1. Punch the protagonist a thousand times = 1000x
2. Kick the protagonist a thousand times = 1000x
3. Slap the protagonist a thousand times = 1000x
4. Save the protagonist once = 1x
Note: This is a tentative list. The host may or may not receive any additional tasks unless triggered by the plot.」
Jin Wei read the tasks once… then read it again. He could not help but to give the hovering system a strange glance.
“This… hitting the protagonist? Isn’t this simply seeking death?” Jin Wei asked after seeing the violent tasks.
Punching the protagonist? Kicking and slapping him? Laurem is the protagonist. Hurting him is equivalent to violating the rules of the world. That can’t be done easily, not even the second lead characters on the protagonist’s side can’t escape any retribution.
The protagonist is the world’s dearest child!
Just by that, it is enough to know the consequences of hurting such existence. Jin Wei had experienced enough drama in his life and understand what happens to those people that hurt the protagonist. Face-slapping is already light while dying with a body still intact is already lucky.
Even though he is immortal, he still didn't want to end as a mangled corpse!
The system could see the worry on Jin Wei’s face. The silver ball flew around Jin Wei twice then landed on the tip of Jin Wei’s nose. It’s pencil sketch-out eyes held no emotions but the care it emitted can be felt.
「Host need not to worry. I already inquired the higher-ups about the tasks and affirmed that it will not do the host any harm. The consequences had been shielded away by the World’s consciousness and would be considered nulled.」
“Really?” Jin Wei is skeptical.
It’s not that he didn’t trust the system or those beings in authority, but there will always doubt when it comes to logically accepting reasons. It will be his first experience harming someone as a neutral party, as such crimes are typically committed by villains.
「I can assure you, host. There are no hidden consequences in doing these tasks. And if there is, it wouldn’t implicate the host badly.」
“That is not really reassuring,” Jin Wei commented.
He scratched his chin, still a bit unsure, but there is nothing that he could do. He has no choice but to follow or else he would be annihilated. That’s a worse ending compared that being hacked to death by the protagonist.
“In that case, what are my restrictions?”
Mob characters are freed from OOCs and missions but it doesn't mean that they can do whatever they want. Due to the level being lower, restrictions are made to eliminate influence. The greatest weapon of a transmigrator is the system, so mob characters can no longer seek help from the system except opening and closing the ShopMe.
This means that the only exchange a mob character can do with its system is to communicate and purchasing things in the shop. Operations like stat adjustment and ability boosting are no longer accessible. Checking the statuses of other characters is likewise not permitted.
It made Jin Wei a normal being. Sort of.
Suddenly, a loud clamor caught the attention of the two spectators. Jin Wei peered over the edge of the alley and found the group of teenagers leaving a motionless body behind. He stared at the figure for a bit and thought of his tasks. After doing a short reflection, he just drove his body away from the roof and fell to the ground in a swoop.
