Laurem noticed two changes in his life.
First change is his extraordinary rise in power.
Laurem was aware of his body’s constitution. He is certain that he was not quite human. It was a reality he had known since he was younger, and his mother was not particularly covert about it. Hybrid children tend to be more sensitive and intelligent by nature than ordinary children and would acknowledge their difference in their early years.
That is, if they were able to live longer than their prophesied short lifespan.
Laurem had only been conscious of his Demon lineage, so when he discovered he could transition into a Werebeast, he was taken by surprise. He began to wonder whether he was a werebeast-demon hybrid rather than a human-demon hybrid.
But that is impossible. He could tell that he, too, was a human. Could he have had at least three different bloodlines? Laurem finds it amusing after giving it some thought. How “lucky” could he be? Being a hybrid makes it challenging enough to reach maturity; now he appears as someone who could possibly have three of them?
Even though Laurem was born intelligent, there are instances when it is clear that he is still a child and does not have the same level of common sense as adults. He didn't get the notion that by integrating all the different races, they might overcome their flaws and establish a "perfect" human.
Or that he is also a hybrid yet didn’t have the weakness despite being one.
Anyway, he truly benefited from having ample strength.
He had a wide range of abilities because of his demon blood, including incredible strength and fast healing. Though, it only became apparent when her mother died and he was forced to fend for himself. It was impossible for him to get work at his age, so he had to scavenge for leftovers and fight the rabid dogs every time.
Eventually, his body gave up.
Then, the demon blood took control of his body. Although he is still human, a couple of his skills were made possible by his demon ancestry. For instance, he will recover from injuries two times more quickly than the average person. Any injuries he had, unless they were fatal, would only take a minimum of two days to heal and return to normal, as if he had never been injured.
His ability to heal himself is not indeed a simple thing.
He was able to be daring and unafraid of death thanks to these rudimentary superpowers. It is also the reason why such a small and relatively vulnerable youngster could thrive in the slums.
These already existing qualities, however, seem to have advanced recently. His recovery time had increased fourfold, allowing him to now observe the progression of healing of his wounds. When he purposefully fractured a bone to assess its capacity, same with the wound, it just took a few hours for the bone to recover to its previous state.
It is as though he had become a human panacea.
Apart from just that, there’s the increased sharpness of his senses. Before, even though his perceptions are generally attuned to the ordinary, he could feel that something was obstructing them. It is analogous to an incomplete talent.
Consequently, now it all takes is a quick glance to identify anything a hundred meters away. When going to the alleyways, he no longer carries any light since his eyes seems to have night vision. He could also bypass obstructions and sense when feral dogs were nearby. It’s like giving him a CCTV but more human and precise.
His hearing is in sync with his vision. It is only now that he could tell that everything around him owned a specific sound – like how the ground is always pulsating, or that the wind seems to carry a language that is always singing in his ears. The soft feather dropping to the ground became as loud as thunder, and the clamorous mutterings of the crowd sounded as bees humming in his ears.
It is very noisy.
But at least, this ability allowed him to detect movement. He is now capable of recognizing airflow disturbances and exploits them to track his surroundings. Together with his exceptional vision, Laurem was able to attack and flee without getting hurt.
There is also his incredibly keen sense of smell. Different from his heightened sense of sight and hearing, the increased sense of smell made it painful for him. The acrid scent of the alleyways from rodents and litter is amplified to maximum making his nose congested for a few days. However, Laurem was able to adapt well.
He has no choice since it has become a part of him.
At this point, he could now rival a young adult werebeast.
His rapid reflexes and acute senses made walking to the market a breeze. Even though he is stealing right in front of them, neither the magic wielders could detect him. He'd gotten so good at scavenging scraps that he didn't have to worry about going hungry anymore.
In terms of strength, Laurem demonstrated his dominance when he fought that notorious band of thugs who constantly bullied the poor peasants on the streets. Their number meant nothing to his quad speed and double strength onslaught. He simply had to sidestep a few times, punch a few times, and kick a few times, and everyone was beaten up.
Nobody could take away the sense of achievement and satisfaction he felt as he stood over the fallen bodies. He eventually received his due punishment. The sensation is invigorating, especially the surge of adrenaline throughout his chest.
He felt like a beast, and there is nothing truer than this.
The second change in his life is the additional character that always keeps him company.
Correction, the additional character seems to only look for him just to pick a fight.
Laurem has no idea what the other person is thinking; he just shows up to fight every three days, ensuring that Laurem gets beaten black and blue. It's worth noting that even with his improved senses, he can't see the other guy coming at all, as if he popped out of thin air. He'd materialize out of nowhere and start beating up on Laurem, as if Laurem had offended his ancestors or something.
That is why, every third day, he becomes hyper-aware of his surroundings. He will minimize moving to public places and will remain in that tight alley to reduce Jin Wei's advantage. Unfortunately, Jin Wei's assault is never within his line of sight no matter how cautious he is.
This continuous defeat created a deep impression on Laurem's mind.
He thought that he became powerful so how could he not defeat the stranger?
Jin Wei looks thin and weak, even though he is older, Laurem is stronger. Yet, Laurem could only kiss the ground after every fight. The awakened beast blood within him made his desire for power stronger.
He only wished for Jin Wei to be defeated!
However, the more they fight, the broader Laurem's vision of the situation becomes. He understood that he is not lacking in strength and power, but rather in the skill for maximizing their utilization. Jin Wei is able to overcome him every time because he harnesses Laurem's strength to defeat him.
This means that Jin Wei's attacks were not random but refined skills of martial art.
When Laurem understood the method, his attitude on Jin Wei began to shift. He no longer considered Jin Wei's attacks to be children's play, but rather a teaching component. His combat technique improved as well, nearly startling Jin Wei several times.
As a result, he began to venerate Jin Wei. He may appear fragile and stupid, yet his abilities are sophisticated and clever. His appearance is very misleading to which Laurem presumes as a pretext used by Jin Wei to avoid suspicion.
However, the longer they are together, the more engaged Laurem becomes. He couldn't explain it, but he secretly hoped that these little conflicts would go on forever. He would even pretend to be defeated because Jin Wei would always feed him with medicine as his aftercare.
Yes, Laurem is fully aware of it.
After their fight, Jin Wei would check upon Laurem and makes sure that he is completely out before feeding him medicine. The medicine – or was it really a medicine? Laurem never tasted something comfortably sweet and warm like honey before and thought that what Jin Wei was feeding him is not medicine at all.
Isn’t all medicine bitter?
Also, it’s not giving him any healing effect but only made him feel relax and full. So that must not be medicine but some candy from somewhere. But why would this person beat him then would feed him candy at the end?
At one time, just wanting to tease Jin Wei, he purposely placed his tongue near his lips to lick Jin Wei's slender fingers. The one feeding could feel something wet touching his fingers that made him jolt. It was the protagonist's tongue ah.
"I-is he awake?" Jin Wei whispered.
Seeing the Laurem still unconscious, Jin Wei assumed that he just got careless and pushed the pill down again. Only the moment Jin Wei left that Laurem licked his lips. The pill tastes sweet and smells minty-
But Jin Wei's fingers seem to taste better...
So Laurem treated Jin Wei as his regular visitor. When Jin Wei sneaks around preparing for a fight, Laurem will always feel his chest tight and a bit warm.
The anticipation of being hunted by this person gives him a sudden thrill of excitement. It's a very naughty feeling that scratches his heart. And when the two of them are exchanging blows, the exhilaration of touching the person is very satisfying.
He has no idea why, but the idea of attracting Jin Wei's attention makes him extremely happy.
