At the police station

At the police station

Jan 02, 2021

We were taken to the police station where we made a statement . The only evidence available showed that the house help had used my phone to call her boss (I later learned that her name was Seline). There was no way I was going to prove I was not the accomplice. The officers asked me to give the location of the house help I told them I did not know but they were not satisfied with my response so they took turns to beat me up but I had nothing else to say,I just had to bear with the pain. When they couldn't get anything from me they agreed that I would be taken to the court the next day. That terrified me so much that  I could not even cry. They asked for my family's contact information so that they could contact them and inform them that I had been involved in a crime and would be taken to court the next day .Now that was my biggest night mare!!! I  wouldn't dare contact my family !

First,I had misused my school fees and at that particular time my family knew I was in school but instead I had gone to work in a night club then caught up in a fraud scandal and in a police cell waiting to be taken to court the next day! How would I explain all this to my family? And most of  all, considering how much they used to struggle to find my school fees, such news would heartbreak them and I just couldn't bear that so I refused to give any information about my family and said that I was a neglected child and had lost contact with my family . I proved that by telling them I had left school to work in a night club to pay my school fees but they were not fully convinced, not giving any information about my family made them even more suspicious of me.

I was taken to a police cell. I tried to think of a way out but nothing! I was all alone no friend to turn to and I couldn't turn to my family. A short while later an officer come and took me back to the interrogation chamber . I got excited thinking that maybe the house help had been found and so the truth would finally be revealed but that was not the case ! They told me that since I was still a student ,and the   fact that my situation was miserable and it was not good for a student to have a criminal record they would give me two options either give the location of the house help or pay the stolen money back . Based on my situation only the last option would work for me.

Seline  provided the bank statement of the money she had withdrawn . It was twice the amount that I had saved for school fees!! I told them I did not have that much money but they were so quick to tell me that if I paid half of the money then I would be  set free and allowed to pay the rest in instalments . On realizing I was thinking about paying the money back, they looked so excited! That made me realize they were corrupt officers, they did not care if I was innocent or not all they wanted was to make me give Seline the money then they would force her to give them a good percentage of the money as a way of thanking then for getting her money back! I  thought of just letting them  take me to court  because if I gave them the money that  would mean not going back to school and having to go and work so that I could pay the remaining amount and also start saving again for my school fees . It would also mean I would have to keep on lying to my family about school but then again considering the solid evidence against me, if I was to be taken to court then I would me sentenced to at least three years in jail for being an accomplice to a crime !
