Lost In The World Of Chaos

Ep 02.2 \ Another Little One

Ep 02.2 \ Another Little One

Jan 02, 2021

Aurelio's eyes shone brightly and he couldn't help giddily pulling Enzo to the helicopter. His excitement was evident. Enzo sat beside the woman while Aurelio squeezed himself between his father and Julius.

Not long after, the rain had gone stronger and fiercely tried to pierce through all matter. The helicopter soon set out in the air, the lights turned on to see in the darkness. Silence filled the vehicle. It was mostly because of Enzo's and Aurelio's fear, Julius's annoyance, the woman's nervousness and their father's.. well - silence. No one noticed it as they travelled above ground. How their father would not say a thing. How he stared at his wife - the woman - with a look one wouldn't give to a lover. And how utterly silent he was the whole way despite having a relatively runny mouth.

"So, what's your name, dear?" The woman tried to alleviate the mood by smiling and talking to Enzo. Her eyes were still focused on the path thus it wasn't that dangerous.

Enzo muttered shyly, "Enzo." And didn't say anything more.

"A lovely name. Lio said you lost your parents? Where did you last see them?"

"Uh - there's also my brother, and.." Enzo narrowed his eyes, trying to remember. "We were hiking. We.. were roasting a deer in the woods, I walked away somewhere to pee and when I came back they're all gone." The woman was about to speak when he added with a somewhat sullen voice, "The deer too."

"...... Are you hungry, boy?"

"Hm." The boy nodded. Feeling shy admitting this to a stranger, he hung his head.

Amusement danced in the woman's eyes, "My name's Maria. That's my husband on the back, Miguel, and those two little devils are our kids - Julius and Aurelio." Without looking Maria's hand turned to the back, "Julius, can you get that paperbag at the back? No, not that, the yellow one - Yes. Give it to me." Julius handed the yellow bag to Maria. Maria handed it to Enzo without looking and permitted, "Those are burgers, you eat them, right? There's also water in there, I think."

The yellow paperbag sat on Enzo's lap and his eyes were stuck staring at it. And with a shine in his eyes, he voiced with hesitation, "T-Thank you."

"You're always welcome, sweetheart."

The journey continued on from there. The little boys were asleep, the man was dozing off and the woman was simply driving. A simple family, they looked like.

Just then, while the sky was still dark, a loud bang sounded in the vehicle. The alarm blared and all the people inside woke up with a start. Maria's brows were furrowed. She was fiddling angrily with the buttons before her, her frown going deeper and deeper as seconds go by amidst the blaring alarms. Miguel was silent once again and the boys were completely alarmed and confused.

"Mom, what's going on?" Little Julius asked as he rub his sleepy eyes. The alarms were annoying him, and that boy in the front seat with innocent eyes was making it worse.

"Calm down, boys. Everything's fine."

But it wasn't.

And it didn't take long for them to realize that themselves. Just as Maria finished her statement the helicopter let out a deafening shriek before all the lights and sound dissipated in an instant. There was darkness all around and it made the people in it tremble with fear. Everyone felt it. The gravity pushing on them, the darkness that enveloped all, and especially the pain of the crash once the broken helicopter finally landed harshly somewhere on Earth.

Then there was silence.

There were no movements sensed. The helicopter crashed at midnight, in the middle of a forest, and fortunately there was no one around with such bad luck to receive part of its impact.

The trees were dancing. The cool wind enveloped the place as the creatures hid themselves, seeming to have wanted to make the gloomy atmosphere worse. The people in the helicopter littered the forest floor, laying on the dirt, eyes closed and consciousness gone.

When Aurelio woke, he was already in a room. Every thing was made of woods, and there was only a bed, table and chair inside. He tried to sit, but what came next was pain on his head causing him to hold it.

"Ma..?" Mumbled, Aurelio. There were a few gashes on his body that was the result of the crash. His head also probably suffered the fall.

No one answered. Head as confused as a rock, he stood up from the bed and walked to the door.

Then there she was, his mother, talking with unfamiliar people outside. Houses like the one he woke up at surrounded them, not resembling the evolution the 21st Century brought. It was also obvious they were around a forest of some sort.

Upon noticing her son, Maria immediately ran to him with a worried look.

"Baby, are you fine now? Your head - Is your head okay?" Maria crouched down, held him and checked his body with concern.

"I'm fine, mom. But where's brother and papa?"

"Julius is playing with the other kids, and Miguel--" Her eyes looked down, her hands on Aurelio slightly trembling, "Your father's missing, Lio."

Aurelio went silent. He still couldn't digest the information when his mother suddenly pulled him to a hug, and not long after small sobs escaped her.

"W-We tried to search for him, Lio. We tried! But we still couldn't find him. Not even a freaking corpse!" She sobbed harder.

"Ma.. stop crying, mom."

"Oh, dear." Seeing the situation, another woman tended to them. She was unfamiliar to Aurelio, but she held Maria up and separated her from her son. She smiled sweetly to him, "You must be her other son, Aurelio. You can call me Aunt Melda, by the way, and I'm the head of this town."

"Town? Where are we?"

Aunt Melda called two people to take Maria away, and that made Aurelio widen his eyes. However, just when he was about to cry out his mother's name, Aunt Melda interrupted, "Don't worry, sweetheart. We'll just bring Maria to a room and let her rest. You can come there later." This made the boy calm down.

Aunt Melda took Aurelio and showed him around. The town she ran wasn't really that big. They were surrounded by trees and the open area was as big as three gigantic mansions squeezed together, but oddly enough, the people that Aunt Melda introduced him to seemed more than content to be in the place.

"So we're still in the country?" The little boy inquired as his big eyes brightened at the cows and sheeps around.

Aunt Melda chuckled, "Yes, sweetie. Just around the Nameless Forest."

"Oh, oh! The Nameless Forest! I know that one! My teacher taught me it." The boy seemed proud at his memory, grinning widely.

"Uh-huh. But don't ever go there. Especially when you're alone. That forest's size can be overwhelming. Oh, and my men found your family unconscious in that forest."

And that's when Aurelio finally remembered. His face immediately turned that of worry and concern as he turn to the head, "Auntie, have you seen someone else aside from mama, papa and brother?"

"Hm?"

"He was about my age, has blue and green eyes. He was with us."

"What's his name?"

This shut Aurelio up. He narrowed his eyes at a cow and used his brain cells, but in the end he still couldn't remember what the boy's name was, thus he started to guess, "Elio? No. Uh - Zelio? Zeno.. Zio!" His eyes brightened, "His name's Zio! Where is he?"

"Zio? We didn't find anyone with that name--"

"Yeah, we don't have that kinda name! We have a cute Josiah tho," The two turned around and was met with another little boy wearing a bamboo hat with a giddy grin on his muddy face, "And that's me!"

"Josiah! Don't interrupt when an adult is talking!" Aunt Melda reprimanded, glaring at the boy.

"You don't look like one." The boy Josiah stuck his tongue out and ran to the others.

Aunt Melda sighed, "That's Josiah. He's a bit annoying but that kid is kind, get along with them, okay?"

They talked a bit more as they round the place. When they were finally in front of the house Maria was staying in, a voice called out behind Aurelio.

"Aurelio?"

Aurelio turned around, but just as he did so, warmth crawled on his skin as a pair of small arms enveloped him. Shock crept up his face. "Aurelio! You're finally awake!" The boy that hugged him sobbed.

It took a moment for Aurelio to realize who was hugging him, and when he did, his eyes widened with shock and relief, "Zio?!"

"Who's Zio?" The other boy looked at him with tears streaming down his face.

"Uh - you?"

"Wha..? My name's Enzo! How could you forget that?"

"Oh.. Enzo.. you're here too?" He awkwardly asked.

"Yep!" The boy released himself from the hug and despite his face dirtied with tears once again, he grinned widely, his eyes colored in hues of the sky and emerald turning into crescents, "And we'll be living here!"

Aurelio was shocked at first, but after understanding the situation from his mother and Aunt Melda, and meeting the friendly neighbors, he finally accepted their fate.

It turned out they needed to stay there for a while to make a vehicle that they could use to go home. But as time gone by, the stay stretched until their families decided to stay there temporarily for some reasons.

It was such a great start for a real friendship. One helping the other and the other relying on his friend in a new place where he knew and trusted no one.

How come ten years later, in the same place, above one ground and under the same sky, these two would be seen glaring daggers at the other, as if wanting to slit each other's throat and never see them again?

What had truly happened in the span of ten years?
