"You hungry?" The handsome man behind the wheel asked. Before his new companion could even respond, her stomach growled loudly. He chuckled softly while she just looked embarrassed.
"I'll take that as a yes," He smiled. He was more than happy to feed his new companion while spending a little more time with her. She was very intriguing to him and seemed liked a really nice person.
"Thanks. He didn't take me to eat anything and I was kind of hoping that he did, but I know his reason for not even doing that," She responded. He frowned deeply at that comment. So not only was he being an emotionally unavailable douche bag, but he was also refusing to feed her like the fat shaming asshole he was.
"This guy just gets worse every second," Sam grumbled.
"You're telling me," Daphne mumbled, "And didn't you go eat with your date?"
"Hm? Yeah we did, but dinner was such a disaster that I lost my appetite," He rolled his eyes. She frowned deeply while he appreciated the fact that she was upset for him, especially after what he had endured.
"What the hell? What did she do?" Daphne asked. Samuel sighed loudly at that question. Aside from yelling at the waiter and bawling her eyes out like a baby, she was also a horrible eater. She ate like a literal pig, she talked with her mouth full and food went flying out of her mouth, and she blew her nose on a napkin that she was using. Just thinking about it made Samuel shudder visibly.
"That bad?" Daphne knitted her brows out of sympathy.
"Uh-Huh," He responded.
"She just gets worse every second as well," Daphne murmured, "Our moms sure know how to pick 'em."
"They really do," Samuel shook his head.
"The upside to this is that I've met a very handsome and cool guy," Daphne smiled. He smiled back her because he appreciated the fact that she was complimenting him. He had been so deprived of compliments lately his his nose had gotten a little long and his head almost tilted back out of pride.
"Another upside is that I've met a very beautiful woman who's personality is out of this world," He grinned. Daphne's cheeks heated up and so did her ears as soon as she heard that compliment.
"Thanks, Sam," She smiled.
"You're welcome. Now let's figure out what to eat since there are still some places open," He replied.
"There's a really great food truck that's open on the south side of town. The guy who owns it is usually open till eleven," She informed him.
"Food truck, you say? What kind of food does he sell?" He questioned.
"It's Jamaican food and it's pretty good too," She responded, "You'll love it."
"Alright. That sounds good," He nodded, "I'm getting pretty tired of expensive food that doesn't fill you up."
She chuckled softly, "A rich man sick of expensive food. How funny."
"How did you know that I had money?" Sam cocked an eyebrow.
"Your suit, it's Armani. When you've been around people who place value over designer over anything, then you kind of pick up on what's what," She explained.
"And what exactly do you do that allows you to be around those types of people?" He asked smiling.
"The only thing that I did was be born into a rich family," She muttered, "Other than that, my current career isn't something that allows me to rub shoulders with the elite."
"What is it that you do?" He questioned.
"I'm journalist for Xena, it's an online magazine for young adult women and teenage girls. It keeps me happy and fed," She answered.
"As long as you're happy, that's all that matters," He said.
"And what about you, Mr. Handsome? What do you do for a living?" She questioned.
"I'm the current CEO of my family's skin care company," He answered.
"Well you definitely look the part," She said. Samuel glances down at himself for a moment and laughed. He really did look the part of a CEO.
"I can tell if your complimenting me or making fun," He told her.
"A little bit of both," She giggled, "But I have nothing against CEO's. My dad was a CEO and a pretty damn good one."
"Your dad was a CEO?" He inquired.
"Mhm," She nodded.
"You certainly look the part," He teased. She caught on to the joke and laughed.
"Somehow I feel like you're teasing me," She remarked.
"Yeah. I'm teasing you," He chuckled, "It's nice to know someone who's another rich kid that isn't a total and complete asshole."
"My dad was not about his kids being some rich assholes. He had zero tolerance for it," Daphne replied. Samuel noticed how she was talking in past tense about her father, but he decided not to pry.
"Mine does too," Samuel chortled, "He would skin me alive if I acted like some entitled brat."
"Just thinking about how my dad would be if I acted like that sends chills down my spine," Daphne shuddered. Samuel laughed at her reaction.
"Your old man was that scary?" He questioned.
"When he was angry, he was like a bear and it scared the crap out of me every time I got into trouble," She answered.
"Can't be no worse than my dad who was as ruthless as a tiger when he was angry. I still have nightmares thinking about those times I got into trouble," Samuel added.
"We have some scary dads," Daphne giggled.
"We really do," He agreed. They finally arrived at their destination together. Samuel took off his suit jacket and left it in the car before locking the doors. Him and Daphne walked towards the truck together and ordered their food.
"Since you're driving me home, let me pay as a way of saying thanks," Daphne said.
"Hm...that seems fair," He nodded putting away his wallet. Daphne paid for their food and thanked the man at the food truck. As soon as he took a bite into his food he was in heaven. It tasted so good. He was so glad that he actually let her suggest where to go. They sat down on a close by bench and ate their food as they talked to each other. The atmosphere around them was a very comfortable one where you wouldn't believe that these two had just met almost an hour ago.
"My mom is going to kill me when she hears about tonight," Samuel sighed.
"Ugh! Mine too," Daphne rolled her eyes, "But I bet she already heard about it anyway."
"Yeah that douche probably already snitched. He seems like the type to do that," Samuel remarked.
"Yours does too, especially to daddy," Daphne agreed. Samuel soon remembered his date's father when he went to go pick her up from her home. Her father seemed like an absolute menace that would crush a couple of spines if anyone hurt his daughter. When he rung the doorbell, her father answered with a glare that sent chills down his spine.
"And suddenly you just reminded me of her beast of a father," Samuel mumbled.
"Whoops. Sorry," She giggled.
"It's fine. Just do me one favor though," He told her.
"What?" She asked.
"Pray that my spine is in tact," He answered.
"The man can't be that bad," Daphne laughed.
"Daphne, he threatened to shatter my legs if I hurt his daughter," Samuel deadpanned.
"Sheesh," She made a face, "He is that bad."
"Uh-huh and I really do love walking," He responded.
"Well if that's the case, then maybe you can go hide out on some unknown island. Ya know, off the grid," She said.
"Hmm. Off the grid does sound nice," He pondered.
"Yep. It'll just be you, the sun, the sand, and the trees," She smiled.
"That does sound nice, but I can't leave behind my best friend," Samuel chuckled.
"And who is your best friend?" Daphne asked. Samuel reached into his pocket and took out his phone. He went straight to pictures and pulled up the most recent photo before handing it to her. Daphne looked at the photo and her face lit up at the sight of a smiling Sam and Dave.
"Aww! He's so cute," Daphne beamed.
"Thanks," Samuel smiled back, "I've had him for at least three years now."
Daphne took out her phone and did the same thing to show him a picture of her and Cristian.
"This is Cristian. He's my baby," She gushed.
"He's cute," Samuel replied.
"Thanks. I've had him for at least seven months now," She said.
"How did you come across him?" Samuel asked putting his phone away.
"A college friend of mine has two huskies and he did not have anymore room to take care of the puppies so I drove like eight hours to get him," She explained, "We've been together ever since."
"Wow. That's some dedication," Samuel replied.
"Well I've always wanted a husky since I was a child, but my mom was allergic so my college friend giving them away was a dream come true," She giggled.
"Dave was from a rescue shelter a childhood friend sponsored and volunteered at. He asked me to help him one weekend and when I saw Dave sitting in there all alone I felt bad, and then I adopted him," Samuel said.
"Aww. That's sweet," Daphne smiled.
"Thanks," Sam smiled back.
"It would be nice if we could take our dogs to a park together and let them get to know each other," Daphne sighed.
"Who says we can't?" Samuel questioned. Daphne looked at him in surprise.
"Do you really want to hang out after tonight?" She asked.
"I don't see why not. You seem like a cool person to talk to," He answered.
"Thanks. So do you," Daphne said.
"Plus it'd be nice for us to get to know each other," He added.
"That is true," Daphne nodded.
"So what do you say? Are you in?" He asked.
"I'm down if you are," She grinned. They both exchanged numbers with each other and threw away their food before leaving.
When they arrived at Daphne's house, Samuel larked the car in the driveway and got out to open the door for her.
"Thank you," She smiled.
"You're welcome," He nodded before closing the door. They walked slowly towards her front door together in a comfortable silence.
"Thanks for tonight," She said, "I really appreciated you standing up for me and punching that asshole in the face."
"You're welcome. I can't stand jerks who treat women badly," He replied.
"Me too, but without jerks in this world a lot of great men wouldn't be able to find a gem amongst rhinestones," She said.
"That's true, wise man," Samuel chuckled.
"You can make fun all you want, but I've got plenty more where that came from," Daphne joked.
"Oh really? Please, wise one, tell me some more of your philosophies," Samuel teased.
"I would tell you some, but you're too busy being a butt," Daphne countered.
"A butt? Nobody has called me that since the third grade," Samuel laughed.
"Maybe not to your face," Daphne mumbled.
"Hey. I'll have you know that I'm a very nice person," Samuel said.
"Somehow within the few hours I've known you, I do not believe it at all," Daphne smiled.
"You're making all these remarks, but remember that there could have been some gross cab seat as your best friend," Samuel told her.
"Wow. Just when I thought your personality wasn't trash stepped in sewage," Daphne shot at him.
"You've known me for a couple of hours and you're already calling my personality trash? How rude," He replied.
"Yeah well it sucks to be you," Daphne giggled. They both laughed together.
"Well you have a good night and I'll see you next week," Samuel smiled.
"You too," Daphne smiled back. Samuel watched her get inside before heading to his car. Daphne flashed her porch light twice to say goodbye before he headed on home.
If Samuel has to sum up tonight, then he would say that it was a pretty good night filled with some bumps in the road, but it was an overall amazing night, especially because of Daphne. It was all thanks to her that this night did not completely suck for the two of them.
