Welcome back, it is good to see you again. I hope you're ready to continue our story, and if I remember correctly, I did say that there will be more thrilling moments in our tale. Let me say that we're getting close, I just want to make sure I have all the preparations ready. In the meantime, let me tell you what our intrepid hero decided to do with the knowledge in mind.
Ava looks at the worried faces of the other kids. David seems ready to take action, Wendy wants to bring comfort to her, and Harold wants to know what was going on. Ava is not and won't be willing to put them in danger, and decides to keep quiet about it.
“You know, I'm getting tired, we should go home,” says Ava, but still looks nervous.
“Its the middle of the day and we've been here a few hours,” answers Wendy.
“Well, I didn't get any sleep last night.”
“You were the first to wake up, and you're the one who said how well you slept,” argues David.
“I'm not feeling well,” says Ava.
“I saw someone selling potions for these occasions, I can go and get you one.”
“Didn't say it was a stomachache.”
“Is something wrong?” asks Harold. Ava takes one look at the little boy's face, full of worry for her, and she sighs in defeat.
“Look, I need you all to go home and wait for me there. I have to do something,” says Ava and tries to walk away, but David grabs her by the shoulder.
“And what is this 'something' that you have to do?” asks David while still holding on to her.
“Maybe we can help,” says Wendy.
“I know you can, but this is too dangerous,” says Ava and gently removes David's hand from her shoulder.
“We'll be the ones to judge that, so tell us what's really going on,” responds David as he crosses his arms, and by the looks of it, Wendy and Harold had the same idea. Seeing no other way to get out of the situation, Ava gives in and signals all of them to huddle together. They find it strange, but quickly comply with her wishes, and since Harold is smaller than everyone else, the others let him stand in the middle.
“Someone is planning to assassinate the king and the princess,” whispers Ava to avoid any potential assassin from hearing. All of the children are stunned into silence, each one of them waiting for a reaction from the others.
“Crap, you're serious,” responds David.
“Of course I'm serious, when was the last time I joked about something like this?”
“Well, sorry, I thought this would be the first time.”
“I wish it was.”
“Back to the topic, someone has a plan to kill the king, why don't you go to the guards?” asks Wendy.
“They won't listen to an orphan, and even less if I have no proof,” answers Ava.
“And you want to stop them?”
“Yes, and it would be easier if all of you helped.” At the sound of that, all of the children go quiet, and it hurts Ava, but understands their hesitation.
“Look, I'm always in favor of doing the right thing, but this might be too much, even for you.”
“We've gotten in trouble before, but this could get us into something worse,” says David.
“I know, and I understand if you all want to take no part in it, but I can't let this go,” responds Ava.
“Why though? You never liked nobles, so what makes them any different?” Ava knows that he's right.
“I don't know, and believe me when I say that I don't trust them one bit. However, disliking them is one thing, but letting them die, knowing that I could have done something to prevent it, is another.” Once again, even in the middle of the crowd, they hear nothing around them. Ava was ready to leave, with or without their help, but a sigh coming from David stops her.
“I'll help you out, but you better be ready to do my chores for a whole month.”
“As long as Harold doesn't do anything too dangerous, you can count me in too,” says Wendy.
“I want to help,” says Harold with a smile. It would be a lie to say that Ava wasn't surprised, but if all it took was doing their chores, then it was an easy price to pay.
“It's a deal,” answers Ava with a nod.
“So, what's the plan?” asks David.
“I don't know much, I just know one of the assassins, and they're waiting for a black jester."
“For what?”
“They didn't say, but I would assume a signal of some kind.”
“Okay, and that's when they'll attack.”
“Yes, but I don't know where the other assassins are. The only thing I know is that they wear black cloaks.”
“It would take a lot of time looking through this crowd,” says Wendy.
“I can help,” adds Harold, eager to be of any assistance, and that gives Ava an idea.
“And you will,” responds Ava.
“Are you forgetting who's his older sister?” asks Wendy.
“He'll be fine, and I think he's going to enjoy this.” It was something simple, Ava tells David to put Harold on his shoulders, and she lifts both of them using mana to increase her strength.
“I know it's a big crowd, but I'm sure you can find them,” says David.
“Found one,” informs Harold while pointing forward with a finger.
“Wait, really? That fast?”
“I only see one person wearing that color.”
“Wow, it's like they're not even trying to hide.”
“Well, no one knows what's going on,” says Ava.
“Fair point,” responds David as Ava puts him on the ground, and he sets Harold down on his feet.
“So, where was the other one?”
“At the other side of the square, close to a fruit stand,” says Harold as he points at the other side.
“Great, so here's what we're going to do, David will stop the assassin at the other side, while I get the one from this side,” says Ava.
“And what would you have us do?” asks Wendy.
“You should take Harold back home and wait for us there.”
“I'm ashamed to say this, but I was hoping you would say that.”
“Don't be, someone has to take care of him, and there's no one better than you,” says David and winks at Wendy, causing her to blush.
“You're just trying to sound cool,” teases Ava, “but he's right, both of you will be safer at home, even more if things go wrong here.”
“But I want to help you stop the bad guys,” protests Harold, and Ava kneels in front of him while putting a hand on his shoulder.
“That's very brave of you, but you already did more than enough. Besides, someone has to protect Wendy, and we need you to stay close to her.” Everyone could see that Harold isn't fully convinced, but the little boy doesn't want to argue, and decides to answer with a simple nod. With that decided, Wendy grabs her little brother's hand, but before they left, she has a few last words for both David and Ava.
“You better come back home, or you'll both be in serious trouble,” says Wendy with a serious expression, but they could see that she's worried for them.
“Perish the thought,” responds David with a smile.
“We promise,” says Ava. With nothing more to say, they all share a moment of silence, and both siblings start walking home. Now that the two youngest were gone, the oldest prepare to save the royal family.
“You ready for this?” asks Ava and lifts a fist towards David. He looks at it for a moment, gives a smile, and taps it with his own fist.
“Let's be unsung heroes,” answers David.
I'll stop our story here for today, and I have to say that it must be pretty annoying when it was picking up. It is unfortunate, but one needs breaks from time to time, and maybe I do this to keep you at the edge of your seat. Then again, you're probably on your feet, maybe you're running, or just standing in place. In any case, there's nothing to worry, I will be back to continue the story, and I'll make sure not to keep you waiting.
Until next time, good Reader.
