The driver held his hand out expectedly.
Emily reached for her pockets, taking a few moments to find a dollar, before handing the coin to the man.
He grinned at her.
The vehicle door closed as Emily proceeded to find a seat at the back of the bus.
She stared at the phone in her hand, still thinking about how lucky she was to find Bob. Up until she walked into that store, life was just her dragging a bag as she walked on the streets, watching the other children enjoy themselves.
The bus began to move.
Emily was so distracted by the object she was holding that she didn't realize the disgusted faces of everyone else in the vehicle.
Suddenly, she heard a wail, looking up to find a toddler trying to run towards a man she assumed was the toddler's father.
"No darling, I can't-"
The man's sentence was interrupted by a scream as the infant began to wail louder and louder.
People started to groan and cover their ears.
Emily then remembered when her adoptive parents used to go out and would leave her home alone with Alice.
The girl bravely got up from her seat and stuck her tongue out in a silly manner towards the child, resulting in loud and joyful laughter.
Although she hadn't noticed, a woman in a faded blue shirt dress smiled at Emily sweetly as she watched her play with the toddler. Only when she bent towards the man and whispered in his ear did she see her.
'This must be the mother' Emily thought to herself.
The rest of the bus trip was just the girl playing along with the baby as the young boy's parents muttered to eachother.
Finally, Emily had arrived at the deserted airport that seemed as if it was built in the middle of a savannah. The building itself just looked like the smaller version of a standard airport anyway.
But none of this mattered to her as she was going to walk the whole way, which she knew would REALLY exhaust anybody who was going to walk that far.
' two days of endless walking' she told herself.
After she had wished the toddler and his parents farewell, Emily sat down on a pile of grass and double checked she has everything she needed; 800 dollars in cash, two bottles of water she could refill, three pairs of shirts and shorts and of course, the phone.
And so she began to follow the road, not going on the road, but walking beside the road.
