LOLA'S OUIJA

CHAPTER 4: WAVE

CHAPTER 4: WAVE

Jan 07, 2021

Attorney Ramoz kept on and on about his daily life. Little mundane things that everyone does like what food he ate for lunch or what movie made him teary, but I knew he just wanted to cover up the silence between us.

"Won't you ask?" I asked him straightforwardly, "About my mother and I?" He was a bit curious, clear as day in his expression but, he declined. The silence became deafening until he gripped his hands tighter on the wheel and bravely asked. I sighed in relief that this tension between us finally eased, "My mother is quite a woman. You see, she came from the province and dreamed of being a star. Little did she know that the world would turn against her, so she married rich instead." his eyes wandered with deeper curiosity, "Why does she treat you like that?" He asked calmly. I get it though, everyone who has been stuck in a room with my mother and me has definitely wondered the same. They tend to notice the discomfort between us. I clenched my fingers together, warming them up from the AC’s cold breath, "She hates me. I don't know why." A worried expression painted on his face, he knew I was in pain from the thought that a mother could hate her own child. Although he was clearly hungry for more, he kept his mouth shut and his eyes on the road.

To be honest, I never remembered a memory when my mother never hated me. Just less I guess. She grew up in a small town, on a hill, and in the middle of nowhere. It wasn't startling that my mother would dream to be a part of a bigger world. To be something greater than what people said she'll ever be. She ran away at 17 years old to follow stardom. Her family thinking she’d reach higher than most, never saw it coming that the future ahead is of her getting pregnant before a ring. "Shame! Embarrassment!" is what everyone would call it. It was devastating to see such a beautiful lady crushed by its own roots but, all I could do now is imagine. I never knew that courageous woman. Instead, I met the greedy one who hides behind powerful people and uses her own kid as a punching bag.

The sky begins to close its eyes and show the blue starry night. Attorney quickly switched the radio, which had been screeching for a minute, off. "We must be close." He mumbles. Right then, we lost sight of the ocean and into a dark tunnel. It would probably take us a few miles to get to the house, I thought, as I placed my head on the window. On the other end, the trees were tall, the grass was green, even the moon shined brightly on the dark road ahead. The car ride was silent the rest of the way. Thankfully, it wasn't silent torture but was peacefully calm.
