could almost taste her rich, red blood, but then why weren’t his fangs tearing
into her tender flesh?
Why were his jaws locked up that way?
what was that strange fire that burned in his chest and throat? He felt pain.
But he was supposed to inflict it, not suffer it. Something white and frantic was scrambling and scratching around between him and his prey.
he realised that the pain came from a set of small yet very sharp teeth clamped
hard on his throat.
Fear and panic exploded inside his head and he reeled back, howling like he had never before.
That accursed pup, his own kin, was attacking him and defending a Humaine. He grasped at the struggling bundle, digging his claws into it deep as he tried to wrench it off him. But the harder he tried the more pain he felt from those little fangs embedded in his throat.
His lungs on fire, he did the only thing his instinct to survive allowed. Okarg bolted for the cave entrance and hurled himself outside into the darkness. The sounds of his own footfalls, the rushing wind outside and shouts from behind assailing his frantic senses, Okarg ran hard.
He didn’t know where he was headed, he didn’t care. He just ran, ran for his life.
