Welcome back, good Reader, it's good to see you again. If I may, I wonder what kind of jokes you like? Is it the simple ones? The dirty and disgusting? I've heard many, but I have no favorite, would that make me simple or complex? I'm sorry, curiosity got the better of me, and it's fortunate that I'm not a cat. Now then, let's get back to our story.
With the knowledge of an assassination attempt on the royal family, two intrepid children took it upon themselves to stop such vile deed. They know the location of both assassins, who are in position to spring into action, but they're waiting for the mysterious black jester. Not knowing when he or she would appear, they decided to separate, each one stopping a potential killer. Ava locates Borin, a man standing still as a statue, and eyes locked on the royal family. David decides to leave him to the capable hands of his friend, while he moves through the crowds to reach the other side. Then, trumpets play loud and clear, drawing the attention of everyone in the square, even the two children with a mission. Smoke appear out of nowhere, and the moment it dissipates, a group of jesters are revealed. The crowds cheer and give a round of applause, knowing that they will do their best to leave everyone laughing out loud. Only two kids among them are filled with dread because they can see a male jester dressed in all black, with a simple, white comedy face mask. David and Ava know that this was the person both killers were waiting, but they see nothing out of place. The boy doesn't contemplate their lack of reaction, and continues on his way to the other assassin.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, young and old, rich and poor, I give you a welcome to the best festival that you'll ever see in your life!” yells the black jester from the top of his lung so that all can hear him. “Take my word when I say that this will be a day that everyone will remember! Now, enough talking, it's showtime!” The jesters start going into their routine, which involves juggling, acrobatics, and acting like fools. In the meantime, David finally manages to reach the other assassin, who is covered by a black cloak, but this one is a woman. A tan complexion, full lips, long eyelashes, and brown eyes. An attractive woman, but the lack of emotion makes her seem unapproachable. Now that both kids found their targets, each start coming up with a plan to stop their attempt, if they could figure out how they were going to do it. They know that it involves the jester, and he's going to give a signal of some kind, but they can't see any weapons on the assassin. It doesn't help that their cloaks cover their bodies, and it makes it impossible to steal their equipment. Therefore, they have to come up with something else, and David starts testing the assassin by asking for money like a beggar. However, no matter how pitiful he tries to look, the woman pays him no mind and keeps both eyes on the royal family. Then again, since she seems to be completely focused on the king and princess, David thinks that he has a chance to check if she has a knife. He's about to sneak a hand inside her cloak, but his instincts start to blare in his mind, and a chill runs all over his body. Without saying a single word, he starts to walk away from the woman, and stops after making some distance.
“What the hell?” asks David to no one in particular. He doesn't know it, but he was very close from being caught by the assassin. She might be looking away, but she was aware of David, and would have caught him if he have tried anything. On the other side of the square, Ava is trying to show Borin the amazing trick of standing on her shield, while its standing straight. In reality, she's blocking his view of the royal family. The hope is to get him to open his cloak, so she can take a look and see where he would keep his weapons. It is unfortunate that he does the most sensible thing possible, which is to move away from her. Not very far though, just three feet away, and still have a line of sight towards his target. Ava had no other option than to get down from her shield and follow him. Once again, she tries to distract the assassin, this time by acting like any other beggar. Borin looks at her, with no sign of emotion in his face, and finally speaks.
“You're annoying,” says Borin while looking at Ava.
“Can't you spare a few coins for a hungry child?” asks Ava.
“No.”
“How about just one coin? Or maybe some food?”
“No.”
“I can do other tricks.”
“You can do one.”
“All right, which one?”
“The one where you disappear,” responds Borin and looks to the side. “Guard!” Right after that, a guard appears after walking through the crowd.
“What seems to be the problem?” asks the guard.
“This child seems to be lost, you might want to find her parents, they could be worried.”
“All right, come along, kid.” He grabs her by the shoulder, and gently tries to guide her away.
“No, wait–” Ava tries to protest, but the guard doesn't want or cares much to hear it.
“Don't make this difficult, your parents could be worried sick about you.” The guard grabs her hand and starts walking away. Borin goes back to keeping an eye on the royal family, and the situation starts to get dire. The black jester grabs everyone's attention as he stands on the top of a pyramid made with all the other jesters.
“Ladies and gentlemen, young and old, rich and poor, I'm afraid it is time for us to part ways, but do not be sad,” says the black jester as he's juggling balls. “I did say this will be a day to remember, and I'm a man of my word.” In the blink of an eye, the black jester throws all of the balls towards the royal family, hit the ground near their platform, and a smoke screen envelops the area. Both David and Ava can tell that this has to be what the assassins were waiting for. Its even more evident when they see both of them putting a hand inside their cloaks.
Both children jump into action, starting with Ava, who breaks free from the guard using mana, equips her shield to her left arm, and charges at full speed towards Borin. It's fortunate that there was a clear path to her target, and by the time he notices that something is wrong, he gets a clean strike to his side, which sends him flying towards a group of crates. At the same time, David starts running back towards the female assassin, who pulled out a throwing knife, with no actual plan in mind. Out of sheer desperation, or recklessness, he does the simplest thing possible, which is to kick the assassin between the legs. The woman winces, puts both hands on her hurt privates, and drops to her knees.
“Assassins!!” Both children scream as the smoke screen starts to dissipate, while pointing at the would-be murderers. The guards are on full alert, and start to head straight for the suspects, which includes the black jester. However, instead of feeling nervous, he starts to feel excited, and a sinister smile appears under his mask.
“This will certainly become a day to remember,” says the ominous jester.
I'll stop it here, good Reader, but I want you to know that something big is about to happen. I hope this will be enough to make you come back for the next part of our story. Until then, I'm going to rest for a while.
Until next time, good Reader.
