The pale light of dawn was the same it was yesterday, and the day before, and even days before. And yet she could sense something in the air, something new, something different.
A change was coming, a change for the better, or at least she could hope.
Her children, as she liked to refer to them, were awake and turned their heads in unison as she stepped out into the back yard of her little hut.
They were hungry. And though they didn’t show any indication physically, their large expressive eyes shone with the anticipation of their daily ration of early morning treats that she always had for them.
“Good morning, my darlings.” Her melodious voice sang out. “A good morning it is indeed. My instincts tell me so... don’t yours?”
The five multicoloured macaws bobbed and nodded their heads as one.
“Ah, yes... I knew it wasn’t just me. “She smiled warmly at her beloved pets, filling their little eating bowls with a delicious concoction of sweet maize corn, molasses and black pepper corns.
Crooning softly with delight, the five birds fell upon the tasty treat when the familiar tinkle of silver bells cascaded down from the front door of her little hut.
“Ah, who could that be... so early? “ She half smiled and glanced over her shoulder.
“Crooo?” The largest of her birds, a fiery red feathered beauty cocked his regal head.
“You think it’s a customer, Hao?” She tapped the bird’s cocked head. “This early? What do you think, Mayo? And you, Luna? Little Ame? Is it a customer, Darya... and not the City Watch on their patrols again?
The four she named, a gorgeous green, a pristine pink, a boisterous little blue and a glowing gold, stopped eating and looked at her the same way the big red did.
