I woke up with Charcoal curled up next to me. I stretched, reaching out to the ceiling, before getting out of my bed, careful not to disturb Charcoal. I refilled her food and water bowl, before making my own breakfast. Rubbing my eyes, I put water and the coffee grinds in the coffee maker. I had a few hours before I went to work, so I lounged around mostly waiting about an hour before doing my yoga. Yoga was kinda hard to do, because Charcoal had woken up by then and was circling and rubbing my legs and arms.

I woke up actually feeling rested which hasn’t happened in a long time. I had only two classes today, and I was ready for them with a confidence of a person that is about to do something stupid. I put on my usual black hoodie, fixing a pin that fell off during the night, and making sure the paper was in the pocket, my platform boots, my black pants, and a band t-shirt. I looked at my mirror fluffing my hair, posing a little. I gathered the stuff I needed for my classes. I debated whether or not to wear my beanie, I chose not to.
I put on some more upbeat songs on the way to class, feeling good. I reached my first class a little earlier than I usually do, so I sat down and pulled out my phone to play a quick game. A few minutes earlier the class started. I was taking my notes when suddenly the wave of exhaustion hit me. I hadn’t had any caffeine this morning and it was hitting hard. I yawned trying to keep my eyes open, and listen to the teacher explaining the subject. Before I knew it the class was over, and I groggily walked out the door. I needed caffeine. So I started walking to the cafe.

I wondered if Charcoal was doing okay with me being gone. I hoped so. I was working with Joey today, both working front and back. I always liked when we worked together. I got to see some of the brave people willing to try his creations, I had even tried one now. I told Joey he could become a professional at creating new drinks, and all he said was that he knew, but he liked the cafe too much. Joey was getting someone when Leaf walked in. They looked so exhausted. Joey finished ringing up the other person telling me what they wanted. I made the person’s drink, while Joey asked Leaf what they wanted. Leaf was getting another one of Joey’s creations, but with extra caffeine. I gave the drink to the person as Joey got done ringing up Leaf. Joey walked away starting to make a new drink for Leaf, as I walked over towards them.
“Hey, Leaf. Long night cleaning?” “Nah, I just got hit because I forgot to drink anything caffeinated before going to class” “That’s the worst” “It is” We stood there a little bit quietly. “Well I have to get back to work” I walked into the back, thinking about any other things I could've said to them to keep talking to them. I started washing some machines, as I continued thinking about Leaf.

I looked over at the counter, Aster was in the back. I wanted to give her the paper, but I was really nervous. I decided to wait until I was leaving to give it to her. I worked while drinking my coffee. I was slowly waking up drinking the coffee. I was almost done when I looked over and Aster was wiping the front machines. I packed up my stuff, and took the paper out of my pocket. I walked up to the counter, nervous. “Hey Aster, I’m putting something on the counter for you” “Oh okay. I’ll look at it when I finish wiping this off” “Alright!” I squeaked out. Before she could turn around I sat the paper down on the counter and turned walking out quickly. I turned around right before I walked out the door she was about to pick it up. I darted away, my heart beating wildly. I kept walking trying to calm my heart. I took a deep breath, it wasn’t like I asked her out. I hoped this worked otherwise the next time I see her it would be super weird.

Leaf had left a little paper on the counter, as I picked it up I saw Leaf quickly walk out the door. I chuckled as I read what it said. They were just asking to be friends, and left their number. I was happy, I didn’t realize they wanted to be friends too. I put the paper in my pocket, before going back to work. I would text them after I got off of work. I get why they were so nervous though, I would have been too.
I got off about two hours after Leaf left the paper with their number on it. I sat it on my counter looking at it. I pulled out my phone and typed in their number. I didn’t quite know what to say, so I just typed ‘Hey, it’s Aster’. It was a few minutes before Leaf texted back, but once they did, we didn’t stop texting. I would be doing something then stop to text them, it took a while to get things done.

I sat by the phone instantly replying to Aster every time she texted me. I felt my cheeks become warmer and warmer through the night. I couldn’t stop smiling. I finally had a person that I could call a friend. I laid on my bed, feeling like I was a 15 year old again rebelling against my mom staying up past bedtime. I was surprised about how many things that we talked about. The sun came up on us texting each other, and that’s when I realized just how much we were texting. I decided to tell Aster I was going to try to at least get at least some sleep in, before I went to work. She understood saying she was about to say the same thing.
