On the eve of Tolani's second year marriage to Charlie Charlton, she stopped taking her birth control; a somewhat bittersweet depart, had sex with her husband, got pregnant.
Charlie Charlton was ecstatic. Tolani had trapped him. Now all she had to do was wait for his death. Dread appeared during the first trimester with Tolani panicking. She realised she wasn't ready. She didn't love Charlie nor did she find the baby cute or angelic. She had no bond with the child.
Tolani had an idea. She dedicated a whole day for a spa/massage neglecting to inform the masseur she was pregnant after requesting for a deep tissue massage. Gritting her teeth through the pain, that night she miscarried. Charlie was devastated.
Tolani was thrilled. Damning his money, she wouldn't be chained to a child she didn't want. Now a 26 year old dejected recluse, Tolani fell into the arms of temptation, specifically the seducing arms of Rose's fiancé, Michael.
Tolani should fell awful, she thought staring into the ceiling of Michael's bedroom, sprawled between his sleepy arms and sweaty sheets. Their cheating had been going on for a year now and in that time, Rose married Michael, Charlie was still focused on tearing away her self-esteem.
Tolani should be scorned. But this past year had been one of the best of her life. Aside from Michael being an immaculate beast in bed, the coldness in her body disappeared by the ferocious need in Michael's eyes. Rose wouldn't find out.
Her marriage was better anyways because Michael had a distraction elsewhere. Because honestly, Tolani didn't think anyone would want to live forever with an envious, backbiter. The gold-digging cheater consoled herself.
Around the time she was 28, Tolani in the quiet, sunny mansion found out she was pregnant with Charlie's baby. Quietly aborted it. Recovering from the abortion, Tolani stared at her reflection in the VIP dressing room's standing mirror at her favourite clothing store unpleasantly thinking back to her miscarriage.
Ever since then, Charlie Charlton began carrying with him the yearning odour of progeny making nasty or sullen comments of 'bewoe is my bloodline' bullshit.
It was no surprise their five year anniversary saw the end of their marriage, Charlie Charlton citing how strongly he needed children now that he was 75. Reiterating the fact that she being a 29 beauty and would soon find another husband or lover if that was what she wanted.
Tolani didn't remotely care. Just sat at the dining table, neatly wiped her mouth with the serviette and raised her head to his aging face calmly agreeing to the divorce. T̶h̶e̶i̶r̶ ̶ His divorce lawyer, a Dave Todd painstakingly explained how she wouldn't get anything because she signed a post-nup.
Which if she had .the financial and mental capacity she'd've fought against the post-nup in court as getting out of a marriage empty handed wasn't part of her gold-digging ideals but she didn't care anymore.
Tolani Onitsha was free.
