When the Leaves Fall

CHAPTER 5

CHAPTER 5

Feb 08, 2021

Delighted by the possibility of learning magic, Diana momentarily adhered to Hector and Hugo, so much so that the shame of filling and squeezing her chest was unbearable. How could she have forgotten him for even a few minutes?

-Marcos, before we talk about my training, I need to ask you something - Diana said, holding her hand firmly to the moonstone amulet that she always carried with her chest, while she feels like memories flood her vision and senses.

Diana no longer felt the chill of early autumn on her skin, as she dissolved, she could feel the hot summer sun. She felt the salty, damp wind on her face from the ocean. Her mind was trapped in distant memory, a memory from that day.

- Hugo! Come on, wait for me! - Diana shouted with all the curtains in her lungs as she tried to reach her best friend, but her legs were too short.

- I won't go easy on you just because you're a skinny girl! he shouted over her shoulder, with an ear smile. He laughed, even more, when he saw Diana's frown upon hearing the word "skinny". Oh, how she loathed it when Hugo called her that!

Despite her short legs, Diana quickened her pace, trying to reach him, but without much success, since in the end, she ended up tripping over the hem of her dress. The fall was sudden, the ground was hard and unforgiving, a point where she was unable to hold back her cry of pain.

In the next instant, Hugo was already beside her, his face contorted with concern. Through his tears, Diana disappeared that any trace of the smile, which she loved so much, had completely disappeared. This fact scared her so much, the point of making her tears stop.

-Don't make that face, I'm fine ... - she said, holding Hugo's hand in hers.

- How can you say that? You're bleeding! - exasperated Hugo, doing a grating knee to Diana - You have to be careful, if you continue like this, you will not live until our wedding! - Hugo said in a mixture of concern and anger - Come here to take care of it.

- Marriage ?! -Diana's face was as red as her hair - Where did you get that idea? - She continued, sitting on the edge of the stream, while Hugo was already crouching, dipping a torn piece of cloth in the water.

-Simple: my mother said that two people get married when they love each other a lot. I can't think of anyone else for me to marry other than you - he said seriously, while gently wiping Diana's knee - When we grow up, we will get married. And these amulets will be the proof of our memory - he continued, smiling while taking two necklaces out of his pocket and handing one of them to Diana - Look, my initials are engraved on the stone! It was a hell of a job! - he said proudly, putting the amulet around his neck, puffing out his chest.

Diana was speechless, her chest seemed to have filled, with a mixture of joy and excitement. The amulet in her hand was made of a moonstone: just like the color of Hugo's hair, which was undoubtedly one of the things Diana loved most about him. In the center of the stone was the letter H, delicately outlined. Diana was impressed, but she was sure he had asked for help from an adult. She doubted that a 10-year-old boy could do such a delicate job, but she didn't care about those details.

- It's the color of my hair - murmured Diana, watching the amulet in her hands, turning even redder.

- Right? With this, when I look at a stone, I'll always be able to remember you, wherever you may be - he said with a smile, warm as the sun - And yours works the same way - Diana nodded, but she was certain that she wouldn't need an amulet to remember that smile - So, do you promise? Do you promise to marry me? - continuous Hugo serious

- I promise - she said, serious and with a feeling of certainty in her heart.

- Diana? What do you want to talk about? - Marcos's voice carried her to the present. She no longer felt the summer heat on her skin or the smell of the wind, all she could feel was the cold, so intense that seemed to invade her body, in such a way Diana thought she could never experience the heat again.
