I did notice it earlier but all these buildings were in ruins. Moss had crept up on them there were very few windows in tacked and not one was without cracks and missing pieces. A culmination of a few years of destruction and rejection what exactly happened and where am I? As I crept closer to the fight I saw another monster just like the one I fought A group of 7 soldiers were firing at it each in armour much like my own. But their armour had the label E with a different four numbers after each one. they were exhausted and injured the most noticeable thing was the giant crowd of unarmed people. Civilians just watching this happen. I walked into the crowd with my cloak on and watched the fight at a bit of a distance. Although it was apparent these soldiers were going to lose the civilians did not seem to care. There was a child tugging at my cloak gripping harder his eyes were welling up full of tears. He was snorting and trying his best to hold back his tears I took advantage of the situation and knelt down to ask him a few questions.
“What’s happening?” he looked at me now even more scared.
“I’m sorry I thought you were my sister” I ignored his line and asked my question again this time in a slighter higher pitch as to calm him down.
“The soldiers are going to lose the fight against the Koti Karakia” he looked at me as if this was common knowledge. Koti Karakia, huh? So that is what I fought, but the fact that these monsters have names means that they were around longer than a couple of days. I proceeded to ask another question.
“Why is no one scared?”
“Because that is Unit E they just tell the other units where the monsters are and then a better unit comes in and takes over” It seemed like a sound system but considering that I can already see two dead soldiers and I’m guessing the one being eaten by the Koti Karakia I ran into before was the tenth member that would mean they are in constant need of people joining. A man ahead of my muttered under his breath.
“If the split never happened then…” his face scrunched up and the elderly lady next to him embraced him while slowly patting his head.
“what is this split?” I looked at the kid through the visor he had blue eyes and blonde hair probably around the age of 5. He was confused as if I had just mentioned a topic that was as well-known as the alphabet.
“How does mister not know that?”
“I’ve been under ground sleeping for a while” He was a kid not like anyone would believe him and he wouldn’t be hard to deceive.
“The split is when so many monsters came out of the ground that split open. They just kept coming out and they still are” He gripped my cloak harder. I saw a worried teenager in the crowd jumping up as if looking for someone.
“Is that your sister?” I pointed to the lady and he quickly ran to her while crying he held his arms out ready to embrace her and she did the same knelt down and took him into her arms.
“Where were you?”
“With that weird man” the child pointed to his last location but I had long since disappeared. The older sister looked concerned. Just as I re-positioned I caught a glimpse of a new group of soldiers these ones had the letter C in front of their codes. It was hard to see they knew what they were doing. First the made a barrage of bullets aimed at the eyes and joints where the hard exoskeleton was not present. And then one came in with a great sword and beheaded the Koti Karakia when its neck reached his eye level.
The split was clearly more complicated than monsters living underground there was no way they could keep coming out there was more to this and if I wanted to know then I need to follow this group.
“Where is its partner?” A soldier spoke up to unit that was fighting it previously. They spoke to softly for me to hear it but the new unit quickly headed in the direction where I came from as they started to move a loud noise boomed through the air. I looked back to see the building above where I came out had collapsed and a huge dust cloud covered the area. I knew the buildings integrity was bad but to think I was but ten minutes from death. The soldiers quickly made their way over.
“Do you think he survived? Of course not he distracted the Rayuk so we could survive the best you can do is remember his name!” the soldiers raised their voices before looking over to the civilian group and calming down it didn’t take a genius to realize what had happened. They ordered everyone into a line 3 people wide there were easily 39 civilians as I was I would stand out. I started my camouflage and followed their lead. The monsters didn’t appear anywhere on the journey after that. Soon a giant metallic smooth wall came into my sight on top were giant turrets and pulleys. I followed the men to the gate and slipped past the guards the tunnel ended shortly and inside was a completely different place. The buildings were very high tech a complete contrast to the sky rises and apartments on the outside and there was sunlight. Outside this city there were grey clouds and a red sky. What exactly happened here and where do I start.
