"Hey Nanna," I say softly, slowly stepping into her room. She looks up at me from her bed and smiles.
"My boy, how are you?" She grabs my hand as I settle down next to her on the mattress.
"I'm doing pretty well, I think. It's...still strange, being away from Freidberg, but I'm...adjusting," I respond hesitantly, trying to not make her feel guilty for the move. She's doing much better at this facility, at least that's what her doctor says. I don't want to make her sad or feel bad again.
"Have you visited Kai yet?"
I shook my head. "But, Seamus called earlier and I guess the twins are begging for me to see them so I'll visit...soon." Honestly, the only thing that keeps me from visiting is my dislike of driving. I have plenty of time after classes, and I haven't gotten a job yet. Though, I really should be looking for one. I don't like having to rely on my mom for money, especially since Nanna got sick. She may be paid well, but I know Nanna's treatment isn't cheap. I quit my job when we moved towns, and I just haven't felt comfortable with the idea of being out in public around all these new faces yet. But, I have to get over that and move forward with my life. That's what Kai would say if he were here, and what I'm sure he'll say when we talk next.
"When do I get to meet your new friend? Elias, right?" I'd mentioned him briefly when I'd visited her earlier this week, and she'd been immediately interested in getting to know him.
"Elijah, and I'm not sure. I haven't asked him yet." I'm sure he'd be more than happy to meet Nanna if I ask.
She nods and smiles at me. "I'm so glad you've made a friend already. I worry about you, you know. My shy boy." She pulled me into her arms and kissed my forehead. I was her only grandchild, and we'd always been close.
"I know Nanna," I reply softly, feeling my face heating up. I don't want to make her worry.
"You'll make more friends, I know you will. You've always been such a sweet boy."
"Nanna," I chuckle, "I'm 23, hardly a boy anymore."
"Speaking of hardly being a boy anymore," Nanna's eyes take on a devilish twinkle, "has my grandson met any handsome young men at this new campus?"
I giggle and make a zipper motion over my mouth. She does her best to give me a fake pout before her smile wins over. It's not long before I'm giving her a basic description of a few guys who caught my eye. I hesitated before describing Demian, but he was definitely hot and on my mind. I don't tell her anything about how I met him or what his name was, but she gave a cheeky whistle when I described his arms.
We talk for another hour or so, until a nurse comes in to take her vitals and give her her meds. We hug tightly and I promise to come again soon. I leave with a smile on my face and warmth in my heart.
