Death Wishes

She sat between her parents. Her mother had worry etched onto her face, while her father's face was expressionless, but she could feel his tense shoulders and rigid body, he was just as worried.

The room they were waiting in was dull and lifeless. Bare, white walls suffocating her, two small windows showing little of the outside world that was filled with misty grey clouds, sounds of little beads of rain dribbling down the small glass windows echoed through the room and the smell of cheap floor cleaner flooded her nose.

Her fingers were constantly twitching, both nervous and scared for what's to come next. There was also the sound of her father's watch, ticking. It rang in her ears, time was running out. Her leg started to bounce, she was getting impatient. The room was starting to close in on her, and her breathing was becoming more even by the second when she was interrupted by the sound of a door opening. The sound so loud, it drowned the ticking of the watch and the dribbling of the rain outside.

She looked up at the man who had walked in. His hair was a dark shade of brown peppered with a little bit grey, small wrinkles adorned his eyes and forehead. He had a sad look on his face immediately telling her something was not right.

Relived to see the lab coat wearing man, her parents stood up, seeming a little more hopeful than before. She followed them, standing up as well, but there was no sparkle of hope in her eyes like her parents had. She already knew the answer. The small stack of paper stapled together in the old man's hands was just going to make it more real.

Her name was written on the top paper in the man's messy handwriting. Audrey Hestine. The man then proceeded to flip the first page.

"I have bad news," He said.

And that sentence alone changed her entire life.
