After speaking with the dwarves, Snow invited Red to eat lunch with her, as the dwarves already started their lunch before she was introduced. Of course Red accepted; even if she didn't feel infatuated with the almost fantastical angel in front of her, they still needed to figure out how long Red could stay as well as how to find her way back to her village.
There was a small table just outside the cottage, near the clothesline and with a view of their backyard. The songbirds in the trees are singing a merry tune, and the deer near the forest were taking a short rest in the midday sun. The whole scene felt like one of the paintings that Red and her schoolmates would recreate when they were younger. Snow laid down the tablecloth and brought a plate of sandwiches and lemonade, similar to what the dwarves were eating. They were a little larger, thankfully, because Red was notorious back home for her ability to eat entire feasts alone.
"This is all really nice, Snow," Red let out once she was seated. Snow situated herself across from her after pouring lemonade for the both of them. "You don't need to worry about serving me, and I'll put the dishes away after."
Snow had a look of confusion, then panic on her eyes, but calmed down after seeing Red's earnest emerald eyes. "Oh, thank you. I'm still not used to being offered help yet." Her eyebrows furrowed a little, as if she let out something she shouldn't have.
Red was also a little perplexed; did Snow never receive gratitude before? Helping others was like air to Red; the entire village would work together to make everything work, and asking a neighbour for help was a given. "Do you always do things on your own? Why not ask?"
Snow grimaced a little, and Red immediately regretted what she said. "Never mind, don't answer that, you don't need to tell me, I'm sorry-"
"No need," Snow took a bite of her sandwich before continuing, "after serving in the palace for years, it feels wrong to ask others to do your work."
"You served in the palace? That must have been tiring," Red inquired with a sip of the cold lemonade. Even though it would be awesome to see how central Enchantia looked like, there's no use bringing that up if it made Snow anxious. Red already made that mistake.
"It was, yes, but it made staying here a breeze." One of the bluebirds landed on the maiden's shoulder, and Snow let it nibble on bit of her sandwich. "My animal friends can visit me more often, for example."
Red was in awe of the gentleness that Snow exuded. She only wished that the sepia skinned maiden could feel this way towards herself, from what Red could tell about her memories of the palace. "You're really nice with animals! The ones at home were probably afraid of how loud I could be." Surely enough, the bird flew away once Red started speaking. If only her voice could twinkle like Snow's, rather than be loud and boisterous like some sort of puppy.
Snow watched the bird, and then turned to Red. "They were kind to me, so I am kind to them as well. You seem very kind, so they should be less afraid of you soon."
"I hope one of the birds land on me during my time here!" Red exclaimed. She didn't really know why she was still thinking about the bird, but her getting overly excited about literally anything is not new.
Snow let out a giggle, her voice twinkling again. "I hope so, how long will you stay, Ruby?" Snow asked, fiddling with her cup. That's new, Red thought. She didn't look nervous before.
Red hummed, "I should find my way back in a couple days, I don't want to bother you and my mom must be so worried." She also added, a little less surely, as Red knew how overbearing she could be when excited and didn't want to scare Snow, "but I do want to visit as much as I can, if that's okay with you?"
Snow lightly laid her fidgeting hand on Red's, akin to her namesake twirling in the wind before falling on skin, and Red sincerely hoped that her rising heartbeat was not too apparent. "Of course that's alright. I want to get to know you Ruby."
Red felt herself resembling her namesake as she felt like a small flame was under her skin, but Snow's kind amber eyes were comforting. Red knew that she was excited to get to know more of the Snow she saw glimpses of that afternoon, even when her chest seemed to tighten strangely.
