I hung up the phone and sighed. There was no noise coming from the room, so I guessed Lillian was asleep. Plenty of time to make an appointment.
I dialed the number, and I was put on the phone with a girl with a very sick-sounding voice. " What do you need?"
"Um, are you sick?"
"Yep, but I can't pay the bills with a sick day, so are you injured?"
"No, but my girlfriend is, so I need an appointment for later today or tomorrow morning."
"Okay, well, I know that the appointment for one of the patients had gotten canceled, like, twelve minutes ago, so you could come in, like, thirty minutes."
I smiled, "That's great! Could you send tell me the address? I just borrowed this number."
I heard some shuffling in the background, then a cabinet shut. "We are the Dundon hospital. And you're going to have to get here in twenty minutes actually. Someone just called with an emergency, and It's kind of against the code to, like, put them off."
I jumped off the couch and went to grab Lillian. to my surprise, she was already sitting up and watching that same anime she was talking about earlier.
"So, how long do I have to live." She didn't look at me.
"Twenty minutes." I put on my serious face and this time, she did look at me.
"No joke?"
I shrugged, "Do you feel like you're gonna die?"
She clicked her tongue, then shut off her tablet. "No, so what do I have twenty minutes for?"
"To get to the hospital."
Lillian started coughing, then she gripped the bottom of my shirt and pulled me into her.
"Are you insane!? We'll never make it."
I rolled my eyes. She was going to get up, but I was just gifted by an idea. Probably not good, but an idea nonetheless.
"I can be your doctor then." I smiled and sat on her bed. "How about it?"
She looked at me with a confused expression. "Why would you want to do that? And do I have to pay you?"
I shook my head, then put my hand on her forehead. Actually, money would be nice, but I know that it'll just come out of my wallet.
All her money goes towards rent.
"Know what, I'll take you up on your offer." she took a deep breath and started swaying. " Though, maybe later, because this does hurt and I doubt you can do anything to help my aching body."
I put a hand over my heart and winced." That's rude. "
She rolled her eyes. "As much as I love that cute face you're making, I think I might need a doctor. So let's go." She let go of my shirt, then used my shoulder to pull herself up.
The weight she put on me almost weighed me down, but before I could collapse, she fell.
"Yeah, she's in pain. Why wouldn't she be? That's why I called. So, how fast can you get here? She bumped her head and now she's unconscious."
"Ma'am, why didn't you lead with that?"
"How in the world do you expect me to form words when I'm a mess out here?"
"Just stay calm?"
"Okay, okay. How long do I have to wait?"
"We're down the street."
I sighed, "Thanks." Then I hung up. Probably shouldn't have, but I haven't been thinking clearly since I accidentally bumped her head when I was trying to pick her up. I bumped my head too, but this isn't about me.
I'm stupid when it comes to these things. All I wanted to do was help, and now I somehow made it worse. And what's even worse than that worse is that the ambulance was down the street, and it was loud. A little too loud for my liking, but again, not about me.
I was sitting on the couch for about three seconds when I heard the amplified sound of the ambulance and a strong knock at the door.
"Mrs. Argenten! Hey, you there?"
I got up and walked slowly to open the door. "I'm here."
She nodded and swung the door open. Since she obviously had no idea where the unconscious was, she turned to me with a cold expression. Like she's seen death. And she probably has, and that kind of made me scared. This must've been Lillian's reason for not going to the hospital. The people there are downright cold to you. I honestly thought doctors would have a positive aura.
"Where is she? We have to get going."
I nodded and walked towards our bedroom a little faster than when I got to the door. Moving aside, I let the girl, or, whatever her title was, get Lillian sitting upright.
She then pulled out a little machine, put it around Lil's mouth, and picked her up. "We'll be outside, so when you're ready, just get in the truck. Or take your car, whatever you like best."
