The Great Escape

The Great Escape: Chapter 1

The Great Escape: Chapter 1

Feb 27, 2021

I sat in my cell playing with a paper airplane that I had smuggled in from the dining hall, or as I call it, the insect room. The reason I call it that is because most prisoners become insects there. They don’t actually become insects, but they do get smashed like insects. They get smashed by the giants. The giants are the big prisoners. They aren't very smart but they are strong. I am watching the paper airplane wizz around. I make it dive. Then barrel roll. Then flip. Then crash. I live at Bastlbon. Bastlbon prison that is. I’ve been here for six months. It’s a boring place. I have it better than most though. Bastlbon is a dangerous place. We are all dangerous. Very dangerous. You see, Bastlbon contains people and creatures that have powers. It also contains un human creatures that are dangerous. Not like lions and tigers. More like Gyses. Basically giants. Goblins. A few of them. Goblins aren’t dangerous though. Not physically. Instead most Goblins have mind powers. Kind of like mine. They can convince people of things by just talking to them. Ruby has that. Ruby is my friend. Most Goblins manipulate others. They use their powers to cause drama. Not Ruby. Ruby’s nice. To me at least. My powers are rare. Super rare. I can move things with my mind. That’s how I move the paper airplane. I notice that a giant is trying to break out. All of our cells are made of tyrow glass. Tyrow is super strong and fire proof. There is basically no way to break it. Our cells are lined up in rows next to each other. I see a guard walking down the row. The guards are Seyms. Seym look like humans except they can move a lot faster, think a lot faster, and are a lot more observant. They don’t have powers though. They have shafts. That's what I call them at least. They are the silver rods. Maybe three feet long. They shoot green lightning. They can control the electricity to make it so that you die or are just severely injured or stunned for a second ect. A line of Seyms line up in front of our row. They beat their shafts against the ground. BOOM BOOM BOOM! BOOM BOOM BOOM! Suddenly and quickly our cell doors slide open. We step out of the cells. “

“Face forward!” comes out of the speakers. We all turn to the right.

“Begin walking!” We walk down out of the cell area. As we leave I see the killer hounds. They are big black dogs. About the size of ambulances. They bare their shiny white canines. I like dogs. Just not these ones. These ones are ruthless. I have witnessed them kill a giant. We walk down the twisting hallway, all the way down to the insect room. More Seyms are waiting for us. So are more prisoners. The Seyms are up on the gangway. In the insect room the Seyms rarely interfere. That’s where most people get killed. We all get rationed food. We go to the food counter. We look at the face recognition scanner and then our specific amount of food comes sliding through the whole. I pull my tray out of the whole and then sit down at an empty table. I watch the other prisoners claim their food.

“Well, well, well, look who it is.” Someone says behind me

I don’t need to look to know who it is.

“Hello Yeis.”

“Why hello.” the goblin says. He’s one of those manipulative goblins that I was talking about.

“What do you want?” I ask

“Oh, my dear Maxy-”

“Max.” I correct him

“Same difference. Anyways there's no need to be stuck up. I don’t want anything. Just your charming company.” Yeis says dramatically. I don’t respond.

“I was wondering if you have any disks*?” Yeis asks

“So you did want something. You wanted disks.”

“Well, I am just wondering if you have any.”

“We all know it Yeis, you’re broke. You want disks.”

“Do you have any?” He pushed

“Not telling.”

“You will tell me. Now. You will tell me because you know that I should know. Now tell dear Yeis.” Yeis says

“Oh wise Yeis, you’re right, I should tell you…” I begin. Yeis’s eyes light up

“I should tell you, but I won’t.” I say

Yeis scowls.

“We both know that your mind games don’t work on me. You’ve been in here a while, and your powers have weekend. You can control the giants and other un-intelligent one, but not me.” I say

Yeis scowls.

“You're just jealous?” Yeis says

“Spare me. Please.” I say “Plus why do you even need disks?”

“Well, will you tell?”

“The guards you mean?”

Yeis vigorously nods his head.

“Of course not. I’m no grass.” I say

“Well, I play in a gambling league. Obviously it’s illegal. We use disks as currency.”

“What games?” I ask, intrigued

“Oh, black jack, poker, hold em’.” Yeis says

“Tell you what Yeis,” I say “I have thirty disks that are not in safe keepings, I’ll give you eight if you can allow me to join the league.”

“Gimme fifteen.”

“Eight or nothing, try to bargain any more and I’ll give you none.” I reply, not allowing Yeis to play his bargain games.

“Fine.” Yeis sticks out his hand. I shake it.

Disks are the currency within the prison. You get thirty disks every month. Disks can be spent on different things, toothpaste, extra food, a deck of cards, paper, markers, etc. Every prisoner has a bunch of request sheets. You mark off what you want and put the right amount of disks in and put it all in an envelope. Then you give it to a guard, who gives it to Bralleir. Bralleir is the head of the prison bank. Then Bralleir gets you what you want. You can lose disks for stealing from the guards or making a racket or starting fights etc. Disks can also be earned by volunteering on the monthly jobs. These are jobs like cleaning out the ditches, cleaning up the prison. The monthly jobs have a pay. You get paid per day of work. Lots 0f people sign up for the monthly jobs but the workers are selected in order of best prison record. Yeis has a bad record and rarely gets on the monthly job roster.
