I quickly realized that this might be important for people that are reading who are unfamiliar with some of the terms I’ll be using! 

Babaylan - Shamans. A prominent figure in the pre-colonial Philippines, babaylans were respected in their communities as healers, witch doctors, and ritualists. This role is commonly filled by women or baklǎ.

Baklǎ - Someone assigned male at birth who adopts a feminine gender expression.

Engkanto - A general term for fey-like creatures in Philippine folklore.

First Quarter Storm - A period of civil unrest during the first quarter of 1970 where people protested against the presidency of would-be dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

Ginang - A female honorific, comparable to the context where Ma’am or.

Cry of Balintawak - The event that started the battle for independence of the Philippines from the Spanish. This was when Andrés Bonifacio and members of the Katipunan led an uprising against the colonizers.

Battle of Tirad Pass - An event wherein a regiment of 60 men, led by Brigadier General Marcelo H. Del Pilar, were able to fend off hundreds of American soldiers to let President Aguinaldo escape.
