Memory of the World - Part 3

Memory of the World - Part 3

Mar 02, 2021

In the past, 7 years ago, someone defended a fugitive Lume.

"Stop, sir!" A 16-year-old redheaded teenager pleaded with a convalescent mature man in a hospital bed. "I won't let Lume forget me!"

The mature man was called Amakiir, future archmage of Bruma, and father of the boy who had just run desperately from the room.

"You... you banished my aura. How is that possible?" The man looked puzzled, clearly shocked by such an apparent astonishing incident.

The boy did not respond and just looked at him defiantly.

Amakiir exhaled in frustration, and slumped against his bed.

"Damn, this could be a problem," he said, laying his hands on his chest, staring at the ceiling. "Who are you?"

"That's not important. I won't let you chase Lume, making him forget won't help him!" The redhead replied, annoyed and alert in case Amakiir tried to get up.

"You are too young, boy, if you get to be my age you will wish for the blessing of oblivion, to be a fresh canvas to do whatever you want in the world." Amakiir turned to look at him, intrigued.

"That's not true, sir, I know it first hand. I lost my memory on the day of the incident and I have nothing in this world, not even my own name. If you take away from Lume the memory of our meeting, which is the first happy memory I have, you are going to kill me!" He shouted desperately, vehemently upset at that possibility.

"I just want to erase the memories of a week, not all his life..." Amakiir's expression had softened, with a sigh.

"It's the same to me, sir. My life is summed up to this week with him" The redhead replied in a soft tone, looking down, deep in thought.

"I see," Amakiir sighed, although he had done his best to pretend he was recovered, he was not. He relaxed on his gurney and looked back at the ceiling. "Do you love Lume?"

Those words remained in the air while the redhead silently pondered them.

"I don't know what love is, sir, I don't have any reference, I just know that I can't stay away from Lume, every word and gesture of him seems beautiful to me, and I can't imagine what the world was like before I met him."
He paused. “Literally in this case because I can't remember.” He smiled sheepishly.

Amakiir laughed, banishing any climate of hostility that would have remained in the room. "So, I raised a Casanova..."

"What does that mean!?"

"That you're not the only one competing for my son's heart."

"I-I don't understand, sir."

"Nothing, you'll have time to worry about that," Amakiir laughed as his gaze focused on the emptiness of the room, as if contemplating a future that no longer existed. "Tell me, if I erase Lume's memory. Will he forgive me someday?

"Again with that idea?" The young man frowned at him.

"Just answer me."

"It's not fair to ask me that, sir."

"It's because you have no memory that I am asking you."

"I'm sure Lume would never forgive you, because like the memories, that version of him will be erased. It would be like asking a dead man what he thinks after having killed him."

"I suppose you're right," Amakiir sighed wistfully, "I would have liked to see Lume grow up, fall in love, and fulfill all of his dreams... I would like to save him from all the suffering that his masochism and your selfishness will cause him. I'm counting on you to support him in whatever comes his way," he murmured, he couldn't help but feel that the path his son had chosen was one full of pain.

"Don't worry, I'll always be his side!"

They both smiled politely, although deep down neither of them was sure they had done the right thing with this truce.

"Now that that matter is settled. Can you explain to me why you still don't know your name?"

"They can't find me in the records, they think that somebody dead in the explosion is my family, or perhaps my teacher."

"I see… well, get my cards and my pendulum from that drawer behind you, I need to locate Lume, and if I have time, find out the name of my future son-in-law." Amakiir said jokingly with a half smile.

"Y-yes, sir!" The red-haired replied, quite happy in himself to hear those words, even if they were just a joke.
