My journey began after my passing through the Gate of the Infinite. I did not know why it revealed itself to me, nor where it would take me. It seemed as though neither of these worries concerned me. Instead, it was as though it was destined to be. To escape from what was before, the darkness and destruction. As I passed through the gate which was that mysterious mirror, it was more like a blink as I just traveled away from where I was before to this place unknown. However, it does not seem to be much different from what I was running from. This place, I wonder why I was brought here.
I found myself to be standing inside of what looks to be the ruins of a cathedral, one so massive in size it seemed almost unreal. The large stone bricks had a pale baby blue color with a shine that without close inspection could have been mistaken as metallic in nature. The tall ceiling was gone, the rubble all lay inside the interior which resembles a wasteland or a battlefield. Some of the tall walls remain near intact, yet the empty graves of where massive stained glass windows stood proudly show nothing more than the emptiness of ruin and death that dwells outside of the fallen sanctuary. In others you can see the same with the exception of large shattered shards of glass still standing their post. In the light they reflect different shades of blue although whatever images they might have displayed no longer has any resemblance of their former selves. There are many dark wooden benches that would have seated a large crowd of people. However, many are rotted, falling apart. Others are crushed completely by the debris from above or are in pieces as some are broken in half or only sections still left untouched from when the ceiling fell upon them. Those that remained completely intact, the survivors are covered in dust.
I took my sights off my surroundings to look upward where I could see the sky through the vacant ceiling. It was daytime of course. It was cloudy yet the sky seemed sorrowful even though it was beautiful. It was as though it wore a mask to hide the scars of what it witnessed from above. I understand its pain, it's a survivor of many things but even so, sometimes it takes its toll no matter how long ago the pain occurred. I know what it is like to watch everything fall into despair… One day though, maybe one day things will get better. Someday…
As the moments pass, I return to reality which was in no way better than my thoughts. To run and escape from the horrors of a dying world only to find my way to one that has already fallen to whatever caused the world to cease the way it once was. I began to walk through the rubble with caution for there is no telling what could happen the further I go. Everything is lifeless and quiet though so I do not expect much to happen. The most that has happened is myself touching dust covered objects, debris and such. Some of my footprints leave their mark on the dirt and dust covered light colored wood flooring. I could only imagine how wonderful this place must have been in the past. It is sad to think that I'm the only life here.
I journeyed forward, the sky now clear of any clouds, but I soon found out that where I have been walking all this time was the second floor to this cathedral. In the short distance to my left and to my right are large staircases which matched the aesthetics of the wall and floor materials. I chose to go to the left staircase which surprisingly is in pristine condition, except for the small pieces of debris here and there. Glancing over to the other side where the other staircase was; the center section was completely barricaded by rubble making this the only passage between floors that I can see. That really doesn't too much matter now given to what I have just noticed.
Of course with all the rubble that surrounds me I didn't not notice what lies below. Headstones old and new, crudely made and some very well crafted. There were so many of them. A large cemetery claims the first floor of the cathedral. Without thought, I found myself to be walking away from the bottom of the stairs, walking through the many graves. With a more close up examination I could see that many of these graves are old while some seem "fresh". The more that walked, the more I could see this pattern. After some time I began seeing a light which was the entrance to the cathedral. The doors were missing, possibly collapsed from the destruction or possibly not there to begin with. I can't be too sure due to my distance and the eerie dimness of light that now inhabits this place. The coming darkness is making it difficult to see. Looking up I could see the day is fading into darkness. How long have I been here? How long doesn't matter, but leaving is probably the best thing to do. I would rest here until the beginning of a new day but I worry about the structural integrity. My mind was made up, I was to leave this place to find proper shelter.
That was until I saw out from the corner of my eye, in the dim distance was a figure standing amongst the graves...
