Nova paced back and forth a little as she waited at the loading dock. Opal was supposed to meet her here twenty minutes ago. She stopped pacing and listened to the water crashing against the shoreline. The sound of the waves against the shore was calming. Nova closed her eyes and took everything in with a deep breath. She had always liked the water, the tide, the waves, ever-changing but still always in the same place. She really only got to come down to the docks for her secret meetings like tonight. Nova opened her eyes as she heard footsteps behind her that snapped her away from the deep lull of the ocean. She relaxed a little as she realized who it was, of course, Opal was trying to sneak up on her again.
“Opal I know what you're trying to do and it's not gonna work. It never does.” Nova said, turning around to find Opal standing almost right behind her. Opal threw her hands up in defeat.
“Oh come on just let me have it once, you always let me get so close then reveal you knew I was here the whole time,” Opal said, giving her a fake pout, then smiling at her.
“Then get better at sneaking up on people. I can always tell it's you by the sound and pattern of your footsteps.” Nova said, smirking at her. Opal laughed,
“That's a bit hard for me to do. You’re scary good with being able to tell who’s walking and being able to detect the slightest of sounds.” Nova smiled for the first time in a long time. It was nice to have a friend from her past with her still. Yeah, she had Fletcher but he left when he was 10, he didn't know what it was like for the rest of them after he had left. She knew he had some idea but it was nothing compared to the real thing.
“So how is everything in the Andor mafia?” Nova said as they began to walk down to the edge of the dock.
“Everythings going fine, Aj and I are doing great,” Opal responded as they made it to the edge of the dock where the water stretched out in front of them for miles.
“I hope I'll be able to meet Aj one day, she sounds like an awesome girl. I'm glad you finally found someone.” Nova said, picking up a random stone that had been abandoned on the dock.
“What about you? Have any guys caught your eye recently?” Opal asked as Nova inspected the stone.
“That Edward guy is still a good choice if you ask me, but lately I've seen a lot of good-looking ones out and about at night. Oh like today I ran into this really cute guy, said his name was Jaxon he was so cute and perfect for you! You two would be a perfect match.” Opal said with laughter filling her voice.
“First off Ed is not my type, and me dating or anything like that is not an option for me. Besides this Jaxon kid? What do you even know about him? How much did you actually talk to him?” Nova asked, chucking the stone across the water.
“Only a few sentences, but oh come on Nova, anything is possible for you,” Opal said, nudging Nova’s shoulder.
“You know what happened the last time I was in a serious relationship. Opal, it's not an option for me.” Nova said coldly as the memory’s flooded her mind, and could feel Opal freeze next to her. They both stood in silence for a while, Nova chucking rocks across the silver moonlit waters.
“I wanted to give you something. I know your birthday already passed, but I thought I'd give it to you anyway. I think Leon would have wanted you to have this.” Opal said, breaking the silence as she reached into her back pocket. Nova froze as Opal placed the small package in her hands. Nova slowly opened the package, inside was the Silver watch she had given him for his 13th birthday. Tears pooled in her eyes as Opal hugged her. Nova remembered when she had given the watch to Leon, he put it on and never took it off, except for the last day he was alive. Leon had given the watch to Opal before he left for the trials, it was like he knew what would happen that day.
“Thank you,” Nova whispered to her as she put the watch on her left wrist, just like Leon had what felt like so long ago. Suddenly there was the chatter of people from a little way down the docks.
“I better leave before they find out I'm gone,” Opal whispered panic filling her voice as she stepped away from Nova. Nova knew she was worried someone from the Andor mafia would find out about their secret meetings. Nova laughed, still a bit uneasy
“yeah I have to get back as well, Alfred’s probably waiting for me to get back,” Nova said, placing the packaging from the watch into her back pocket.
"Alright, I’ll see you soon, and try not to get into too much trouble for me, alright?” Opal said, giving her a weak smile. Nova knew Opal was always worried about her safety, Nova had replaced Leon for her.
“I promise, Let’s just hope Alfred's not too mad at me and that Rigby found a way to cover for me,” Nova said laughing as they began to walk back towards the docks.
“Better hope Alfred won't call Egil.” Opal chuckled.
Nova laughed, “and on that note, I better be heading back before he gets the idea to do just that.” Opal hugged her one last time. “Thank you for coming out here.” “It's always a pleasure, Opal, see you soon,” Nova said as they broke the hug.
Opal gave her one last smile then ran into the dark. Nova turned to face the water once more. She let the sounds wash over her for a moment, just to enjoy the sound and the time with Opal then turned and began to run back to her bike. Alfred was so going to kill her when she got back. He couldn’t be too mad, could he?
