"I got a call from my family, Mittens."
For a moment I'm confused, but then I realize he means my family. I feel a pang at that. I haven't talked to them in years, but I have a lot of good memories with them.
"We're going on a family vacation. I'll have to get you a catsitter."
Don't you dare hurt them. I glare at Mittens.
He smiles innocently at me.
"But I suppose you don't understand me because you're just a cat."
The nerve- he's repeating something I said to him years ago!
How was I supposed to know he could understand me?
"Aww, don't worry, I'll be back before you know it," he says, holding back laughter and ruffling my head.
I get up and walk away. I'm not continuing this farce any longer.
Behind me I hear the laugh burst out of him.
I wonder what my parents and sister will think of this new 'me.' I know they'll be able to tell it's not me, but it's unlikely they'll even guess who it really is.
I never imagined this could even happen until I woke up as a cat.
