“It’s Wednesday.” Alice looked at me with eyes of concern. “Are you sure you want to see the results?”
“Yes. Jesse is going to be at work for a while, so I figure that I can surprise him when he gets home.” I tore open the paper. “Well here we go.”
“What does it say?”
“I can’t find the results between all the mumbo jumbo.” I passed her the paper.
“Here it is! You’re pregnant!”
I sat back and let the news sweep through my body because even after all the positive tests I had convinced myself they weren’t true. I was telling myself for three days, that there was no chance in heaven and earth that I was going to be able to do this again. We sat on the couch ‘til five when Jesse came home. He looked upset, so Alice left, but I wasn’t going to back down. I gave him a massage, and explained I had very good news for him that he needed to hear. He went on about his day, and I listened waiting for the perfect moment to arise. He started talking about a girl in AP Chemistry class who was pregnant, and how she wouldn’t be able to do a lot of the experiments. He went on for a little before I finally busted in for the perfect news breaker.
“She’s not the only one who’s pregnant.” I leaned in to whisper in his ear.
“There’s probably half a million people who are. It’s not that big of a deal.” Even with the attitude he seemed excited expecting the best.
“I’m going to tell you two things. First thing is; I’m changing my major.”
“I'm honestly not surprised to hear that. I knew how much you loved music. In fact I was surprised to know you chose chemistry.”
“You spoil all the fun.”
“What’s the other news?”
I picked the paper up off the table and handed it to Jesse who quickly found what he was looking for. He pulled me over the back of the couch and held me excitedly about the big news. Although I wasn’t as confused as I was before I was still panicked in the back of my mind. I wrapped my arms around Jesse’s neck and nuzzled into him when I started crying. I could feel him to start to shake as he started to cry as well and we just sat there holding each other tightly. Suddenly there was a knock on the door and someone screaming police as the threw the door open and charged in. They starting telling Jesse his rights and yanking him off the couch while I screamed as loud as I could.
“Calm yourself Jackie.” Alice held me that night. “They don’t have any proof that you two were together before you graduated. Don’t cry sweety.”
“They probably have more than we think.” I sobbed. “They’ve probably been watching and we weren’t paying attention.”
The cops had come and taken Jesse away without saying a word to me. Later on a detective had come and sat down with me to discuss the situation and pretty much told me that the end was here. Move on from Jesse and start a new life with someone else who’d be willing to pick up where he left off. Jesse could cut a deal and walk away without any real charges as long as I was willing to agree with the deal. I just wanted him to have the life he deserved knowing that I would be able to pick up the pieces no matter what. After he left Alice came over to comfort me and help me figure out what the next steps were going to be. She brought a few of our roommates from the old apartment to help pack up my stuff while she dealt with me.
