Finding food is not a simple process, especially if you are in an unknown area. You can't just wander around and hope for finding something edible it will be your end.
My grandpa always said, think like a prey, act like a predator.
Ask yourself if I was an animal, where would I hide my self.
Maybe inside of trees or in a safe underground tunnel.
Trees here are not suitable for creatures to live inside because trunks are too small, then I need to search the ground or look for birds, but I need to make a suitable tool to hunt them.
I need to think a little harder, or I will die because of hunger.
Rabbit holes will be too hard to stop, and probably rabbits are deep enough to be safe from my hands. But birds are exposed to any projectile I will throw.
I need something to throw rocks fast enough to kill birds before they managed to escape. I can't make a bow right now, but a shepherd's sling will be more than enough. Still, I need a rope for it.
I looked at my boots. Tactical boots, their laces will be strong enough to make one.
I don't know how much I need to thank my grandpa for teaching me how to survive in the wilderness. My parents were never warm to the idea of me learning how to live in the wild, but I am glad they still allowed gramps to teach me.
Now it's time to make one. I have a rope, but I need something to use as a projectile pocket.
Swiss army knives leather pocket! I can use it as a projectile pocket.
It still needs some tailoring to do before using. The first split opened it with my knife, then added two small holes on both sides with the tip. It will do good enough.
It's ready. You don't need to put too much effort into the rope, long as you are used to it.
Now let's try it. I put my finger into the finger loop. It's tight enough, good. Found a pebble to use as ammunition. It will do well enough now swing and let it go.
I looked after small projectile which hit one of the tree's trunk. Not enough to kill a bird but enough to break its wings. Now time to find some meat.
It took me another thirty mines or so to find some birds. They are larger than the birds I knew. Larger body, but same sized wings weird. Still, they are birds.
I need to be careful. If I accidentally step on a branch, all the birds will escape, and I will lose my food.
Lock your eyes to the target, then put a pebble in the projectile pocket. One mistake, and I miss my food. I need to be fast birds could be scared of the sound that air makes while I swing my sling.
Swing it, and release it.
I closed my eyes after releasing the knot.
I can hear pebble splitting the air into two. Seconds later, I started hearing birds flapping their wings.
They are scared of the projectile I threw at them.
I opened my eyes to the sound of something hitting the ground.
A bird is just lying down without moving. It won't be enough to feed me, but half a loaf is better than none.
After cleaning his feathers, and inside I only had a small portion of meat on my hands. If I served with salad and other side dishes, it could be a decent meal.
For now, I will use the straightest stick I found as a skewer to cook this meat.
It doesn't taste bad, but it's just bland. Well, you can't expect much from a portion of food cooked without spices and oil.
Now, what should I do? Should I search for another bird to hunt, or should I pick up some wood for the fire? Should I scream for potential help?. I can't think logically right now. I need more time to think.
A walk in the forest could help. Who knows, I may find something to eat on the way.
Now I am inside the forest walking and talking to myself.
I need to understand what is happening around me. That is a different world than I know, new animals I have never seen before and skeletons that can walk.
I found a berry bush on the way. Each one of them is at least big as half of my thumb, and they look juicy too. My stomach is growling. Should I try one? They are black colored, high chance they are edible (Fun fact most of the black and blue colored berries are non-poisonous, but still don't try to eat them!) maybe one small bite, what could I lose?
It's juicy and sweet. I threw the remaining piece to my mouth.
It's also refreshing.
I waited around thirty seconds to see if any side effects occurred, but nothing happened. I wasn't puking blood, and God didn't show up to take me to the other side.
I picked more berries to eat. I wish I had a small backpack or something to carry all of these berries.
What a meal, I feel like I can run a marathon right now, but I should use this energy to something more useful.
I looked around a little bit. It's time to go back and collect wood, I think. I picked a handful of berries and put them into the pockets of my sweatshirt.
I found another bush and dragged it into my cave, but I noticed something. My morale started to the dropdown. It could be because the effect of the berries is wearing off.
Chocolate increases the amount of serotonin in your body and makes you happy. These berries may have a similar effect. I need to keep myself away from eating them too much, or I may become addicted to them.
There are a lot of things I need to be careful about it.
I need to say sitting next to a campfire makes me relaxed. It has a warm nostalgic feeling in it. I may even sleep right now.
Sleeping was not a good idea. I waken up with the howl of a wolf.
I am still sleepy, and it's grinding his teeth while directly looking at me.
It's slowly walking towards me. I can't allow it to bite me. It may cause an infection. Dying from rabies is not my plan today, but I need to think something, or my plans will change.
I remembered watching the training of military service dogs. Trainers were wearing a specially made sleeve to their arms to not getting damaged by the bite.
I may use my fur coat as something similar. Wolf wasn't coming near the campfire, so I used this to my advantage and wrapped my fur coat into my arm.
This wolf is not that big, almost at the size of a big street dog. He won't be a problem longest he doesn't bite me. My only fear right now is possible infection.
I slowly move away from the campfire, and at the moment, he thought as perfect opportunity dog started to run towards me.
He stopped when he got a little closer and started to growl. I swing my mace to left and right.
"I am making you angry, aren't I?" He may take these words seriously because he jumped to bite me right after hearing me.
I used my fur coat wrapped right arm to block his bite. He almost penetrated the fur coat. I can nearly feel his teeth touching my skin.
I hit his head with my mace. Wolf released my arm with a whimper and fell to the ground.
While the wolf is still stunned, I hit his head one more time to be sure he won't get up.
Now I can finish him right now, but brutally killing an animal is not something I want to do. What should I do right now? I took out my swiss army knife from my pocket and looked at it.
I may kill him by cutting his jugular vein. It could end up in quick death.
If I had a weapon or something like that, I could kill him faster, but sorry.
I looked at the fainted wolf and put my hand on his head. My grandpa said always give your respects to nature before taking one of his lives. They deserve this more than humans.
"I wish I could do this faster."
I started a small fire inside the cave and threw the wolf's body in it. That's the only way to be sure your pact won't try to kill after sight.
Today wasn't pretty, and I doubt it will be in the future.
