Food preservation is one of the main parts of living in the wild.
You need to eat something every day, but not every day gives you a hunt.
Even lions have a %20 success rate while hunting. A human without modern equipment will do much less in a snowy biome with fewer animals than a savanna.
In that case, you either need to consume every bit of food you have or find a way to preserve it.
A hunter will gain twenty-six kilograms worth of meat on an average dear. The deer I hunt had little more fat than an average deer. Because of that, I got only twenty kilograms of venison.
I need to preserve all of this venison, or all of them will rot.
Some of the ways of preserving food are salting, smoking, drying, freezing, etc.
Salting and drying are two popular ways of preserving food, but I don't have access to enough salt or sunlight to dry the meat.
Smoking or freezing seems the most suitable way for me to use right now.
I need to make a primal fridge to store my meat if I want them to freeze, so I'll pass this option.
Smoking seems to be the best option. You don't really need much other than a constant fire.
But I need some materials anyway. Woods big enough to make a platform and something to keep the meat at the required distance for smoking.
Finding suitable wood was not a problem because I am inside a forest, but for the rack. I'll have two ideas.
I either use a rope or another stick for it. Making a rope could take a lot of time because I need to process plant fiber.
On the other hand building, a rack from woods is not a problem for me.
Now for planning my cooking system, I have something like this in my mind.
I'll use four long wood pieces as support for my rack. Each of them will place one corner of an imaginary square I draw around my campfire.
Each of them will be buried into the ground at a 30-degree angle.
Carving a "V" shaped hole in the tip of every one of them will be used to keep smaller woods in place. I also used strips of deer leather I have to support corners.
I hope it will work.
Cook the meat, wrapped in something. It's just a boring old boring way to preserve something. Now I'll go for some sleep.
"Good morning, snowy forest!" We don't have much of an action today. Even that annoying voice didn't talk once.
I could go for a day without something trying to kill me or being an asshole towards me.
Now for breakfast, I have smoked meat and freshly boiled water. What a surprise!
After the meal, I throw one berry to my mouth to be in better shape for work.
I'll wander around the forest then collect some wood way back.
I probably encounter something who tries to kill me, but they'll come here anyway.
The same tree I marked yesterday, the same bird I saw. What a walk, nothing new happens.
Oh, that tree has fruit.
The fruit tree had no leaves, but it had things resembling apples on its branches.
I picked up one of the fruits and looked at it. It was red and not mushy.
"I hope you taste like an apple."
Shapes started to appear in my sight. "Toxin alert!" and here it is, the annoying voice. Should I listen to it? It hates me, but what do I lose if I don't eat it?
I threw the apple. "I hope you don't say that just for fun."
"Enemy presence nearby, one should be careful."
What danger, I looked around, not a single threat.
I draw my bow and put an arrow between my finger. I need to the first strike to increase my chances to survive.
I don't trust the voice, but a potential risk is something you need to keep an eye on.
Even though I am strong, my human body is still fragile, and any blow could be deadly without proper medical equipment.
If a skeleton managed to cut my chest or that deer penetrated my flesh. I could be dead right now because of a potential infection.
What will it be this time, I wonder. Skeletons with better equipment, more wolves, maybe a moose this time? Or just small green guys.
I learned one thing from the week I lived here. Always wait for the most stupid.
"Enemy on sight." The voice said.
"Thank you, dear. I didn't saw green guys carrying weapons right front of me."
Words started to appear in my sight. Good, now there is a red bar over green guys and runic words that I couldn't read the right front of me.
Four of them were looking and growling at me. So green guys are also my enemy.
I slowly pulled the string of my bow and released my arrow towards one of them.
Arrow penetrated the skull of the green guy, and it fell down. Other's looked at the dead body of their friend and started to scream.
Green creatures started to run towards me. I threw my bow towards them and make one of them fall to the ground.
They too short, one meter and thirty centimeters at best. I don't think green creatures are strong, but as I said before, any cut has the risk of infection.
A green creature with a spear tried to stab my stomach, but I managed to dodge it.
I grabbed the handle of the spear and pulled towards myself.
The green creature tried to stop me from grabbing it but released seconds after it.
New screams were heard. I looked around and saw another group of green creatures coming towards me.
I need to handle these three guys before they started to swarm me. With the spear I got, I can do this.
Another creature jumped in front of me and tried to stab me with a dagger, but I just stepped back a bit and penetrated his eye socket with my spear.
The other two tried to step back a bit, but I acted first.
I stabbed the disarmed creature from his chest with the spear and caught the other from his head. The green creature tried to bite my hand.
I put both my in his mouth and started to tear his jaw apart. Their muscles are weak. If it was a human muscle. I wouldn't be able to do something like this.
I think I made other creatures angry because they are just running towards me. I picked up the dagger goblin was using. It wasn't very suitable for throwing, but I'll be trying my chances right now.
Stretched my arm and threw the dagger towards the group of green creatures. It didn't kill but hit one of them from the arm and caused it to stop.
With my spear, I managed to take down another by stabbing it from his throat.
The last three attacked me at the same time. I kicked one from the face, but other ones managed to cut a scratch to my leg.
They tried to stab me again, I let my body tank another hit in exchange for one of theirs life.
My spear penetrated his throat.
Now, one of them was unconscious, other was injured. I only need to take care of one.
This one had a falchion which it carried with both of his hands. I hold my mace and started to come at the green creature.
The creature tried to take a defensive stance, but I know how to broke it.
I threw my mace with all my power towards his face while running towards him. It tried to block it with his weapon, and it will be his death.
For a moment, it broke from his stance, which allowed me to kick him from his chest. The creature rolled on the ground.
I caught the creature from his throat. Now the green creature is trying to scratch my face and arms, but it has no chance.
I started to hit his head towards a nearby tree. First small blood marks appeared. Then pieces of flesh stuck on the trunk of the body. In the end, his skull cracked, and now I can see his brain.
I turned towards the other two goblins. One of them was trying to escape while the other was just lying fainted.
I killed the one who was trying to escape by smashing his head with my mace. For the fainted creature, I slit his throat with a dagger.
"Danger possible, infection on the body." Now it's talking again, "Suggestion of using things with healing effect."
"Life berries are suitable for treatment."
I took out my pouch and threw some berries at my mouth, "Are these ones are the life berries?" I lift one of the berries to the sky.
"Medical treatment successful, no rewards are given."
"See, you could be useful when you want." I teased the voice a little bit.
