“Eros,” she gasped.
“How bad?” he asked again.
He was here sitting on her bed. Was she dreaming? Apart from the constant nightmare, she dreamed of him every night. He consumed her thoughts asleep and awake; it didn’t matter how much she tried to not think of him.
That damn demon possessed her entire mind. Over the past two weeks, she researched everything about Incubuses. Most she knew were fake and over exaggeration but there were a rare few she found that were real from what she experienced herself.
“I don’t know, they’re not terrible but just… it’s the same one over and over. Except she … Dimitra? She’s taking my son instead of me and I can’t reach them,” she walked over to the bed sitting next to him, “My son is pretty much my heart and my world so it’s frightening.”
He looked at her, “She should not have taken you and I should have ripped her apart.”
She shrugged, “Can’t argue with that but then I… I got to meet you, so I guess I don’t mind it too much. It’s just my son he’s my world you know so...”
He pulled her into his arms, “I am here now. I should have come sooner.”
“Why didn’t you?” she wrapped her arms around his neck and breathed deeply inhaling his deep warm woodsy scent.
He took a deep breath, “I wanted to keep you safe.”
She shifted to look at him, “Did something happen after you took me home?”
“Nothing important,” he smiled at her.
She looked at him as she tried to read what he was thinking, she knew he wasn’t telling her everything but didn’t want to pressure him into telling her. Maybe he would in his own time.
“Ok,” she moved across the bed and lied down, he followed, “tell me about you. Did you grow up there or did you just blossom into hotness… I mean existence.”
He grinned.
“What?”
“You want to know where I come from?” he asked turning toward her.
“Well, we could do something else, but you said I couldn’t handle it so yes tell me.”
She watched as his eyes shifted dark with an intensity that told her exactly what he was thinking. The heat of his gaze radiated through her body and settled in her core; she broke eye contact with him to stop herself begging him to take her. The way he looked at her was as if he wanted to devour her body, soul and take her mind with him.
She did not know the reason why he couldn’t be with her but from the look in his eyes, he wouldn’t deny her if he didn’t have a good reason. She needed to trust that even though they just met something in her knew him.
She swallowed hard, “Did you always want to be a Commander?” she asked quickly.
He smirked, “More or less,” he pulled her on top of him, “After the great war, I was promoted and since I did not want to follow in my parents’ footprints, I decided to do it plus I am good at it.”
“What’s your parent’s footprints?”
He stared at her for a moment then answered, “They’re the Emperor and Empress of the Eastern Region.”
She got off him and sat up, “Wait, that’s like a king and queen,” she stared at him with an incredulous look.
He sat up and pulled her back to him until she straddled him, “Yes, it is.”
“Then doesn’t that mean you’re like a prince?”
He laughed, “I guess it does.”
“Umm, ok,” she ran a hand through her thick hair, he was prince. No wonder every demon came after her. She tried not to look at him in a new light, but it was difficult she wondered what kind of responsibilities he had and obligations he was bound too.
He touched her chin and turned her head to him, “What are you thinking?”
She shrugged, “I was thinking you must have a lot of obligations that you have to live by.”
“I tend to live by my own obligations and rules,” he stares at her deeply, “and right now the only thing I want is to be with you.”
She didn’t know how it was possibly for one-dimensional eyes to have such deep and intensity but his did and she knew without any doubt that they were solely for her. There was something happening between them that was beyond them, it was destiny completing itself, fate aligning and two souls finally finding what was meant to be.
“Why won’t you kiss me?” she whispered.
He exhaled and pressed his forehead to hers, “Because I do not want to lose control and hurt you.”
“One kiss wouldn’t do that,” she chuckled.
“Yes,” his jaw clinched, “with you, I would.”
She nodded as desperately as she wanted to kiss him, she would wait she was certain he was worth it, and time was on their side.
“I should probably not sit on you then.”
His grip tightened on her, “Do not move,” he growled, “Not yet.”
She nodded again.
He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, again, a growl vibrated within his throat and his grip tightened even further, “Talk.”
She could see his eyes darken again, she wondered what would happen if she just let it, if she just pushed him over the edge and went with him. However, he would probably come back mad at himself and her and if she really did get hurt in the process by never forgive himself.
“I’m thirty-four, umm I grew up here with my mom and dad, but they live in Austin, Texas now for their retirement. I go visit them every year mostly around Yule, Christmas,” She smiled. “Umm, what else? I like to cook and bake a lot. It like a stress reliever for me,” She nodded.
“Go on,” His grip loosened a bit.
“Umm, well what do you want to know?”
“Everything.”
She laughed, “Ok, ahh well I have two sisters and one brother they live all over, and my older sister lives in New Jersey. Oh, and my brother he lives in London, works for a finance company out there. My other sister lives in Cali; she’s married with three kids.”
He looked at her intently with grip completely loosened; she took the chance of climbing off him and lied down next to him on her side. He followed.
“Tell me about your favorite things.” He demanded.
“I like reading horror novels and unfortunately I’m a sucker for a good romance novel, horror movies and anything chocolate. And while l like my job, I would love to own my bakery café one day.”
She rolled onto her back and stared up at the ceiling, “But my favorite thing in the world is my son, if I had to keep only one and give up everything else it would be him. Just being able to spend time with him and talk or play his favorite game.”
“What is his favorite game?”
She laughed, “It’s Roblox.”
“What is that?”
“It’s this online virtual world where you can do different things, play different games or worlds.”
“Hmm, maybe I will play with you both one day.”
She turned her head to him and grinned, “Sure, “she liked the idea of him meeting her son but how would Romi react to him. Would he be scared or fascinated or a bit of both as she was. Again, she wondered what kind of life they could have together if any at all. She shook the thought from her mind, she would think of today, now, in the moment and nothing else.
“The people that were outside your house, were they very upset that you let me go?”
He turned to face her, “Why do you ask?”
“I’m curious, I guess I suppose they would be since they would have probably wanted to imprison or kill me.”
He reached over and gently stroked the side of her face turning it towards him, she looked at him and became lost in its vast depth again she saw the gold flecks that danced and swirls within the whiteness of his eyes.
“I would not let them hurt you, I would not let anything hurt you now that I know you are here. That you exist,” she watched as his eyes darken into pools of black.
“I knew that the moment I met you?”
“Hmm then why did you kick me and then bite me?”
She chuckled, “Umm, put yourself in my place for a moment. You get attacked by things you never would have believed existed then you wake up in a strange place and those same things are chasing you. Oh, and the hot one eyes turn pitch black. I mean if you were you wouldn’t you have freaked out just a little?”
He was quiet for a moment then nodded, “Yes, I guess if I were human, I would have been … scared.”
“Is that word so foreign to you?” she asked jokingly.
“Yes, fear is something that I have never felt. Have caused but never felt.”
She stared up at the ceiling, “Wow, that’s terrifying and weird. I guess fear is a human thing.”
He pulled her closer, “No bir tanem, even demons feel fear but for me I have never had anything that would cause me to feel fear. Fear can be based on many things, fear for the unknown, fear for a loved one or fear of dead. I have never feared for any of those things.”
“You’re right.”
“What is you fear, Zuri?”
She thought about it for a moment, “For my son. Losing him, my parents and Ari. I don’t want to fear dead, but I don’t want to miss being here for my family, you know. And now that I know there are things that go bump in the night. I fear that too. I keep thinking of all the horror movies I’ve ever watched and are those things real. If demons are real, then are Lycans and vampires and, and the swamp thing is he real?
He chortled at her rambling, “I do not know about the swamp thing but Lycans and vampires yes. Incubuses are descended from them, but we do not drink blood.”
“Oh,” it made sense why they had fangs then, but she wondered if not drinking blood was a choice or apart of their genetic makeup. She smiled to herself, she was definitely her father’s daughter.
She probed him for more about his kind, “When we first meant you said that you were avoided by most, did you mean other demons?”
“Yes, we feed on energy and it is something that everyone and everything has. So, they are right to fear us.”
“It doesn’t seem to bother you.”
“It does not. I relish it as a matter of fact.”
“Ah, you’re a fear power hog,” she said with a smile.
“Among other things,” he was looking at her again and slowly his eyes drifted black.
However, she wasn’t scared this time, part of her understood what that blackness meant that it was only for her and it connected them in a way that either of them had yet to understand.
“Your eyes are black again,” she whispered.
“I can feel them, I just do not know what it means yet,” he kept her locked in his gaze, “you should sleep now.”
“You’ll be gone when I wake up won’t you?”
He nodded, “But I will come back soon as the sun leaves the sky.”
She moved closer to him and placed her head on his chest. She listened to his heartbeat that seemed to be three times slowly than hers. It must be an Incubus quality, she wondered if it had to do with how long they lived. She would make a mental not to ask him about it tomorrow, for not the slow rhythm pulled her into sleep. She sighed and drifted off.
