“I’m sorry, I spoke without thinking, but I do need to leave.” She steps around me, and starts walking. I turn around and fall into step beside her.
“Where are we going?” I keep pace easily, though I can tell she’s going as fast as possible without running. She stops flat, and now I can see we’re in front of the high school.
“Ok, I was out of line when I snapped at you earlier, but if you’re expecting an apology you’re not going to get one!” She yells at me.
“Sorry,” I say as I follow her up the steps, “I’m going to the same place as you.”
“O-oh.” She stammers, and looks down. “I just thought you were following me.”
“Whatever, I couldn’t care less.” I reply. “But honestly? No one would follow you, there's no reason to. She looks a little . . . relieved at that. What a weird person. I’m a bit surprised, when the Sachem told me I was searching for “Four kids that will save the world” I thought they would be a little more remarkable. This girl is just . . . plain. But she is surprising. In more ways than one, and I definitely didn’t expect her to be so cute.
She pushes open the door and walks inside the main building. I follow her in, and as we walk past the front office I grab her arm and pull her inside. The receptionist looks up and smiles at me.
“Can I help you?” She asks.
“Yes, I’m the new student and I was wondering if she-” I point to the girl, “Could show me around Instead of my designated guide?” I grin at her for good measure.
“That sounds fine.” She blushes, grinning stupidly.
I wave, turn around, and pull the girl out the door. As soon as we are out of hearing distance I turn to her.
“So . . . I’m Jason.”
“Why did you do that?!” She whisper-yells.
“Do what?” I ask, smirking at her.
“Ask for me to be your guide! She seems really upset.
“What all you have to do is tell me where everything is.”
“In this school,” She says, her voice a deadly calm. “They expect the guide to not only show you around, but to make sure you know the rules, don’t get in trouble, make sure you get good grades, and tutor you if you don’t! That’s why you had the other girl, because she is class president!” She throws up her hands, “I don’t have time for this!”
She doesn’t have time? How does a high schooler not have time? “I’m sorry,” She sounds genuine, “But you’ll have to find a new guide.” She turns and walks away, not even bothering to say goodbye.
I stare after her, a confused half smile on face. What just happened? I grab my class schedule out of my bag, and head towards my first class. I’m walking down the hallway when someone bumps into me from behind.
“Watch where you’re going.” I snarl. The person takes no notice and keeps walking. My Descrier starts flashing wilday and buzzing. “Shut up you damn thing!” I don’t know what set it off, it’s never done this before. It was given to me before I was sent on my mission.
The Descrier is a palm sized stone with my thumbprint set in the top. Different shades of red and orange swirl around inside it. When I press my thumb into it a 3-D map pops up showing me my destination. I can change the directions by speaking the code word and saying my destination aloud. So far it has beeped when I got close to my target, and served as a GPS. I’m not sure what it’s doing now.
A chill runs down my spine, but I shake it off and walk into my class.
