Chapter 1:
December 3rd 2013 8:28am
As Shannon waited in the principal’s office, she started to feel sick, she began to stand up, but her legs wouldn’t budge. She reached over and grabbed a piece of candy from the desk and looked at it, “Laffy Taffy” the label read, “Banana flavor”, “mmmm banana my favorite” Shannon whispered. While checking her Dexcom the Principal walked back into the room. “phone away please” said the principal. “it’s not a phone ma’am, it is my blood sugar device, I have diabetes, I was feeling a bit under the weather, so I wanted to check to see if I needed sugar or insulin” replied Shannon. “Oh, in that case go right ahead”. Moments later the principal began to pull up a website on her computer, Shannon saw in big letters “NEWS, FATAL CAR CRASH HUSBAND AND WIFE DEAD!”. Shannon began to freak-out, “What is that??” asked Shannon, “I’m sorry to have to tell you, your mother and father were in the accident and they didn’t make it” the principal said while shredding a tear. “That can’t be true! I don’t have a dad”, The principal grabbed her computer screen and kept investigating,” I’m so sorry I must’ve misread the name”. The principal told Shannon to wait outside the office while she makes some calls. Shannon whipped out her phone and immediately called her mom, “ring ring”, “Hello?” a boy answered the phone,” hello? Where’s my mom??” Shannon said confused as to why a little kid has her mother’s phone. “Are you my sister??” the little boy began crying, “mommy and daddy are dead sissy”, Shannon immediately hung up the phone. “This has to be some kind of joke, my dad left when I was young. I am the only child” Shannon thought to herself. A police officer walked into the front of the school and asked Shannon to come with him, “I’m going to take you home” Officer Johnson said while holding his hand out to Shannon.
As the car headed down Shannon Street, she saw four cop cars outside her house, “What’s going on?” Shannon asked to Officer Johnson. “I was told by the Chief of police that your grandparents will be meeting us at your house, I will let them tell you what has happened” The Police Officer said quietly. “Why can’t you just tell me?” asked Shannon. As the car came to a stop in front of the Smith’s house, Shannon got scared and ran out of the car and into her room through the back door of the house. “Shannon?” screamed her grandmother, “please come out here sweetie”. As Shannon stared at her bright pink ceiling in her bedroom, trying to cope with the news she just received, she realized she couldn’t move, she couldn’t speak, and her vision began getting fuzzy.
3:15pm
“Knock. Knock. Knock” “Shannon sweetie can I come in?” nana said softly. Nana peaked her head around the door to uncover Shannon’s bright pink and sparkly room. “Wow, I haven’t been up here since you were eight, I see things don’t change much around here” nana said while giving out a chuckle. Nana walked around Shannon’s room looking at all of the Princess posters that Shannon still had from nine years ago. Nana walked around Shannon’s bed, she stumbled upon Shannon unresponsive on the floor, “Oh my god!!, CALL 911!!!”
4:45pm
“Doctor is she going to be okay?!” papa asked the doctor
“The reason she passed out was due to her blood sugar. The paramedic told me that her blood sugar was 514 when they arrived” the doctor told papa “Oh my god! I should’ve checked on her sooner, it’s all my fault” nana cried out.
As Shannon’s eyes begin to open, she was blinded by the fluorescent lights in her hospital room. “Good morning, you gave your family a big scare, but we all are glad you are okay” the doctor said to Shannon. She spent the night in her hospital room watching TV and eating oatmeal and mashed potatoes, she never really liked hospital food, but her favorite thing to eat was mashed potatoes and gravy.
December 4th 9:45pm
Finally, Shannon and her family got to go home. While sitting in the back of the car with the little boy she began thinking, “What am I going to do without my mom?” “Do I have to take care of this kid?? I’m only 17 I can barely take care of myself”, Shannon started to feel uneasy on the car ride home.
December 5th 7:45am
Sitting at the breakfast table with her Nana and Papa, Shannon finally had the courage to ask about the little boy. “Who is he?” asked Shannon. “Who?” papa said while looking over at nana confused. “The little boy, when I called mom yesterday, a little boy answered the phone and said mommy and daddy are dead, is he my brother?” Shannon began to tear up, looking up at the ceiling regretting what she has asked, before her grandfather could even get a word out Shannon ran up to her room with tears trailing behind her. Moments later her grandmother knocked on her bedroom door. “Sweetie can I come in and talk to you?” nana said quietly. “I guess” Shannon said while her head remained under her pillow. Shannon’s grandmother walked slowly to her bed and sat on the corner near her feet. “The situation is a little more complicated than I know. I knew your mother was seeing someone, but she never told anyone who it was, so I thought she was making up a man so we would leave her alone about dating” nana responded, Shannon chuckled and looked into nanas eyes as a tears flowed down her cheek. Nana wiped the tear from Shannon’s cheek and pulled the fiery red hair out of her face. “But what about the boy?” Shannon asked, “What boy?” nana replied looking around the room. “When I called moms phone a little boy answered” Shannon sat up and looked at her grandmother, “I have your mothers phone, the paramedics gave me your mothers phone, there isn’t a call from you. Are you sure you called the right number?” nana said as she looked through the call logs on her daughters phone. “The last person that called your mother was papa, the night before the accident. I’m going to let you get some rest, you don’t have to go to school today. I will pick up your homework while I am out shopping” nana said while getting up to leave Shannon’s room. “Nana I love you” Shannon cried out. “I love you too sweetie” nana shut the door and Shannon began to cry herself to sleep.
12:17pm
Shannon’s nap got disturbed by a loud crash from downstairs, she opened her eyes, put on her fluffy slippers, and ran downstairs. As she walked into the kitchen, she saw the little boy on a stepstool grabbing a glass from the cabinet. “Who are you?” Shannon questioned as she backed away from the boy. “Hi Sissy!! I’m your brother Drew, it’s so good to finally meet you”, Shannon rubbed her eyes to make sure she was seeing things clearly. When she uncovered her face the room was empty, the boy was gone. “Drew? Hello?” Shannon began running around the house looking for this little boy, “I can’t have a little brother, my mom would’ve told me, I would’ve noticed she was pregnant” Shannon began thinking to herself. After an hour of searching the whole house she gave up and slouched herself on the couch, she reached into her back pocket to get her phone, but it wasn’t there. She got up to check her room for her phone. When she opened the door the little boy was sitting on her bed holding her phone. “Sissy I found your phone” Drew said as he holds his hand out to give Shannon her phone back. “Get away from me!” yelled Shannon, the boy began to cry and ran out of the room. Shannon followed in the direction the boy headed but he walked into her mother’s room. Shannon stopped walking and stared into the room, as chills went down her spine, she slowly entered the room. “Drew? I’m sorry I yelled at you, I’m just as confused and freaked out as you are, I just want to know who you are”. Shannon looked around the room but there was no sign of Drew.
