It was three years since Dave had moved in with me.
Back then I was in my second year of college and in pretty big trouble because the rent had gone up again. So I decided to put an add on the internet in order to find a roommate.
For 3 weeks I couldn't find anyone who was sincerely interested in living together. The only once that had replied were either really creepy or seemed to be kinda nuts.
It was probably because the apartment was in a shitty neighborhood and also definitely had seen better days.
I was about to delete the add and just find a cheaper place to live when I got a massage.
Unknown : hello are you still looking for a roommate?
Me: yeah I'm. Are you interested?
Unknown: why else would I have asked?
Oh great he is probably a total jerk but well finding a new place will definitely be more trouble than him.
Me: how about you come over and have a look?
Unknown: right now?
Me: yeah why not? I'm at home rn
Unknown: okay fine. I'm Dave btw.
I send him the address and only half an hour later the doorbell rang.
When I opened the door I was kinda shocked. He looked way more normal than the other people and even seemed to be around the same age as me.
"Hey are you Dave?"
"Yes or did you expect someone else?"
His voice sounded so monotonous that I couldn't figure out if he was making fun of me or not.
"Ahm no?"
We starred at each other for a moment and then I asked him to come inside.
If he tries anything weird I can definitely beat him. I thought to myself while looking at him. He was almost a head smaller than me and kinda skinny.
I showed him the apartment and then the room. He hadn't said a single thing and just looked at everything with a blank look on his face.
Okay.... he is definitely creepy but at least not in a perverted or crazy kind of way.
But still he kinda gives of a little bit of a serial killer vibe... or maybe he is just a quiet, nerdy guy with bad social skills.
Yeah that's probably it.
He cleared his throat and then said: "Okay where do I need to sign?"
"Wait a second. You wanna move in? Just like that?"
He starred at me trough his half closed, tired looking eyes. Then he nodded slowly.
The way he looked at me made me kinda uncomfortable even though there didn't seem to be any emotion in his pale grey eyes.
"Well okay but I first need some information from you." I said while scratching my head.
He again only nodded in response.
"So.... what's your name?"
"Dave O'Reilly"
"Okay Dave. Where and when where you born?"
"Detroit, 5th July 1994."
Wow he really is not much of a talker.
"Cool and what kind of job do you do or are you still in college?"
There was a long pause before he answered.
"I'm a grim reaper." he said in that monotonous voice of his.
I was dumbfounded for a moment but then started to laugh.
"Yeah right man and I'm santa claus."
"I can prove it."
And with these words he disappeared right in front of my eyes.
I stood there frozen with my mouth gaping open.
Holy shit....
Before I could even do anything he reappeared again.
I screamed at the top of my lungs and fell backwards.
It took me nearly an hour to recover from that shock.
"So you really are the grim reaper?"
"Yes and no. I'm a grim reaper and not the grim reaper. There are multiple of use." He stated as if it was common knowledge.
"Do you... kill people?"
He slowly shook his head. "No the dying stuff they do themselves. I only collect the souls and make sure they end up on the other side."
"Okay fine but how do you even became a grim reaper?"
"I died." He stated blandly.
"So.... you are a ghost?"
"No." He must have noticed my confusion because then he added with a heavy sigh. "Look I don't really have the patience right now to explain this whole stuff to you. Just tell me can I live here or not?"
I bit my lower lip. "What happens when I say no?"
"Nothing. It's not like anybody would believe you anyways."
I thought about it for a moment and then said with a smile "Fine but you have to promise not to kill me and you are paying 3/4 of the rent. Deal?"
He rolled his eyes at me.
"I already said that I don't kill and money isn't a problem. So yeah deal."
Then we shook hands.
Ever since then I've bin living with a literal dead person and I never regretted it.
Because even though he can be a grumpy asshole and an annoying know it all sometimes but he still is one of my best friends and his cooking skills are awesome.
