The Mafia's Code

Chapter 16 pt.1

Chapter 16 pt.1

Apr 09, 2021

Nova sped down the road on her motorcycle. It was only five o’clock but she had something she wanted to do something she’d been meaning to do first. Nova stopped her bike outside a small wooded area. Nova hid her bike in a few bushes and walked into the woods. Even though she had only come here a few times, she knew exactly where to go. Nova walked for a little while until she came to a hidden graveyard. Nova looked down at her feet as a few snow-white flowers sprinkled across the ground caught her eye. Nova picked a few and walked through the graves around her. She recognized a few different names, from what seemed like forever ago. Nova finally came to a stop in front of a small grey grave with the head of a lion on it, Nova smiled Opal had picked the right headstone.

“Hey, it's been a while hasn't it?” Nova whispered as she knelt in front of the grave.

“I uh, picked these for you, I know gold was your favorite color but I don’t think flowers come in that color.” Nova smiled as she set the flowers delicately on the grave.

“I got promoted to second in command, just like you always said I would be. Except for this time I'm not under Lynette's shadow.” Nova chuckled weakly as she felt her eyes tear up.

“I miss you little Lion, I hope you're doing well,” Nova whispered as she placed a hand on the grave.

“I love you, Leon,” Nova whispered as she placed a kiss on the grave. Nova pulled back and ran her hands over the words on the grave.

“Leon Jacob Walton. Beloved son and brother, he will be missed.” Nova smiled a little at the words as a single tear rolled down her face.

“I'll come to visit you again soon I promise,” Nova whispered as she stood up and wiped the tear off her face as she turned to leave.

Nova glimpsed at the grave next to Leon’s and scowled. She felt rage fill her as she spit on the words, "Nova Charlotte Valadez. Beloved daughter and sister, taken too soon." Nova turned away from the grave, the only one taken too soon was Leon. Nova walked away and started to leave. She hated seeing that grave but at the same time, it was fitting. The old Nova, the one that smiled and laughed like it was nothing. The one that had hope that her life would be a magical fairy world. That Nova was buried six feet under with everything she had ever loved, leaving this empty zombie to take her place. Now that Nova thought about it, it was fitting to have a grave for somebody already dead inside.
Nova checked the paper Valentina had given her. “345 Rydal Drive.” Nova read allowed. Why would Valentina want to meet there? Rydal Drive was an exclusive neighborhood uptown. Nova had been there a few times to collect payments. The road was on a hill that overlooked the rest of the neighborhood with only a few houses on the street, so at least it was more secure than meeting in the crowded neighborhood. Nova pulled up outside the house, it was the nicest one on the road. It was white and had beautiful rose bushes lining the outside of the house and the porch. The house was designed to look along the lines of the white house but simpler and less extravagant only hinting at the design. Nova parked her bike in the driveway and checked her watch. It was five fifty-nine. She was right on time. Nova climbed up the front steps and rang the doorbell at exactly six o’clock. Nova waited as she heard someone walking towards the door. Nova let a slightly confused look spread across her face as a little boy around four opened the door. The boy had the same reddish-brown hair as Valentina but his eyes were a pale blue with amber specks.

“Uh hi, I'm here to see Valentina Dietrich,” Nova said as the little boy stared at her.

“Is that your motorcycle?” the little boy asked looking over at the driveway.

“Yeah, it is,” Nova said, answering the boy's question hoping he would answer her’s.

“My older brother wants his own motorcycle but mommy told him that he's gonna kill himself because he’s a klutz. He rides motorcycles anyway.” The little boy said as he walked outside

“Mommy gets upset with him sometimes because he doesn't like to listen. Mommy gets angry at him when he sneaks out. He’s supposed to be in his room right now but he went out on a walk with Shane. Shane is over a lot, he’s silly. I like when Shane comes over. Can I sit on your motorcycle?” The little boy asked as he walked over to her motorcycle.

“Uh, sure? But is your mommy home?” Nova asked as she helped the boy onto her bike.

“Yeah, my mommy’s home. She’s waiting for an important lady, and she told me to get the door. My daddy’s not home though, mommy says he’s in heaven. I don't know where that is but it must be far away. Mommy says I'm just like my daddy. My brother should be back soon and then you can meet him! He's really nice. I think you would like him. He‘s clumsy and mommy says he is accident-prone but I don't know what that means.” The little boy said as he played with the handlebars on her motorcycle.

“Well, actually I'm the important lady your mommy's waiting for,” Nova said as she helped the boy off her bike. Damn this kid talked a lot, he was cute though which is probably why he hadn't been strangled yet.

“I'll take you to my mommy!” The little boy said as he grabbed her hand and led her into the house. The interior matched her expectations perfectly.

The little boy led her into the living room, “Mommy! I found the important lady!” The little boy shouted. As Nova waited she quickly inspected the room, it looked like a nice place to live. She was happy the boy had a nice place like this to live in, when she was his age she would have given anything for this.

“Oliver, what are you yelling about?” Valentina asked as she walked into the living room. “Oh hello, Nova. I'm sorry if Oliver’s been harassing you. We've been trying to work on his rants, he just gets excited when he meets new people.” Valentina said as Oliver smiled.

“She let me sit on her motorcycle mommy! She’s really nice, can she stay forever.” Oliver asked holding onto Nova’s hand tighter. Nova smiled a little at Oliver, he reminded her a little of Raphael when he was that age.

“She’s staying for a little bit but she’s here to discuss business with mommy. Why don’t I take you to your friend's house real quick so mommy and miss Nova can work?” Valentina said as she took Oliver's other hand.

“Nova, the papers are on the table, just start going over them and I'll be back soon. Oh, and Jaxon is upstairs he shouldn't come downstairs at all.” Valentina said as she led Oliver out of the house before Nova could say anything.

“Bye Nova!” Oliver shouted as the door closed. Nova looked over at the table and saw the papers laying on the table just like Val had said. Nova picked up the papers, there weren't too many to go through. This shouldn't take very long at all, she could be in and out. Nova sat down and looked over the papers. After about 20 minutes Nova heard talking and shuffling from the back of the house. Nova set the papers down and put her hand on her gun as she made her way to the back of the house. Nova hugged the wall as she made her way to the back of the house. Oliver had said that his brother had snuck out so it could be him sneaking back in but she wasn't taking any chances. Nova stopped as she heard shuffling and talking behind one of the doors. Nova waited a second then kicked the door open her hand on her gun just in case. Nova rolled her eyes when two boys around her age screamed and the shorter one jumped into the other's arms. Nova had a good idea of who these two kids were. Nova’s eyes lingered on the taller one just a little too long. He was around 6,3 with wavy black hair that fit him perfectly. Nova latched onto his eyes which were emerald green; they had just the slightest shine because of the silver flecks in his eyes. Nova shook any thoughts out of her head, what was wrong with her? The other boy however was a little shooter at 6 feet, he had brown hair and green and amber eyes. His face was sprinkled with freckles.
“Please don’t kill us!” The shorter boy sobbed while the other one stood speechless. Nova sighed this was going to be interesting.

“Jaxon! Wait up!” Shane whined as he ran up to him.

“What's wrong?” Jaxon asked as he stopped walking and let Shane catch up.

“Fuck you man you're like two inches taller than me, why are you so fast? Fuck your stripper stamina.” Shane panted as he caught up to him.

“I'm not a stripper, I just work out unlike you do,” Jaxon said as he started walking away again, making sure to go faster to make Shane upset.

“Please stop walking!” Shane begged him, as he tried to keep up Jaxons pace.

“Besides you take off your shirt when you work out, so again, stripper.” Shane panted. Jaxon sighed, what was he going to do with him?

“Alright fine Shane we can just go back to my house and you can relax.” Jaxon huffed as he started walking home.

“Ughhhh, more walking? Will you carry me?” Shane whined as he held his arms out.

“I'm not carrying you, Shane, you have your own legs,” Jaxon said, shaking his head.

“Hey you said you work out, just think of it as a good workout! Now carry me, daddy? I'll ask for upsies if you like that better.” Shane wined holding his arms out again.

“Don’t call me daddy and definitely don't ask for upsies.” Jaxon huffed glaring at Shane who had his signature stupid grin on his face.

“If you don’t carry me I'll make the rest of this walk hell,” Shane said, crossing his arms and pouting.

“This is already hell, and besides what are you two?” Jaxon said, giving Shane a questioning look.

“If I'm two does that mean you’ll carry me? Cuz if so then I'm dis many daddy.” Shane laughed as he held up two fingers.

“Fine, I’ll carry you.” Jaxon sighed as he slung Shane over his shoulder.

“Yay! Let's go daddy!” Shane laughed.

“Shane, call me daddy one more time and I'm dumping your ass on the side of the road.” Jaxon huffed as he started walking home again.

“Alright, I’m sorry mommy.” Shane laughed hysterically.

“That's it.” Jaxon sighed as he went to put Shane down.

“No no I'm sorry I'll stop,” Shane said, still laughing a little. Jaxon just rolled his eyes and started walking home, maybe if he zoned out he wouldn't have to hear Shane’s voice.
