Shades of Ecstasy

Heists Are Hard. Period- Part 1

Heists Are Hard. Period- Part 1

Apr 16, 2021

It's been a while since I joined a heist so tonight, I opt to join in. Shinobi is still mad about his missing bomb and the constant glares he passes me are beginning to get to me.

Getting away from Shinobi's destructive gaze will be a nice change. Getting on the field---where all the action happens---will be a nicer one. Especially if it's boarding a luxurious yacht---more especially one that has a party being hosted on it. Even if the only one who gets to attend the actual party is Scarlett.

Right after the plan to follow is laid down, she is assigned as the look out for tonight's heist, and what better spot to spy than right in the midst of the party? After all, insiders are the last to be accused when something goes wrong. Same way no one would believe it was an insider who gave Shinobi all the information he needed. People would do anything for a couple of bucks. #ItsAllAboutTheMoney

Infiltrating the yacht isn't hard, since the only one on our team who arrives as a guest is Scarlett. She takes out all the cameras as soon as she has the opportunity---courtesy of our plug giving us the layout of the yacht and it's security systems---and communicates with me through telepathy when she's done.

Even though she isn't in costume, she is donning a glittery gold number with a black wig pulled over her curly, brown locks. That, and the magic of make-up, make her unrecognizable. In the best way.

The rest of us are, however, suited up and ready for business. Little Red deals with the guards posted around the deck, and we head down into the cabin. The entire party is up on the deck, toasting to whatever mediocre thing they can think up, leaving only staff below. It's easy to evade them too, and soon enough, The Blackout and I are in the safe---having accessed it using the security codes our insider gave us.

"I think I just died and went to heaven," The Blackout turns around in the room, gaping at the stacks of money and various weapons shelved up on the walls. "How much are we supposed to bring?"

"As much as these can take." I toss him the duffel bags I have in my hand and watch as he begins to stuff big wads of cash into one of the bags. His movement is hurried and sloppy, but he manages to get everything in it.

I carry the bag of money out as soon as he kicks it towards me, already setting himself to the task of bagging up the weapons in the other duffel bag.

The car we came with are parked a distance away from the docks, so as to draw the least possible attention. Which is a good thing, but also why it is with great difficulty. I manage to remain hidden---while holding onto something heavy enough to make my upper arms feel like they are going to pop out of their sockets any moment.

As soon as I get the bag in the trunk, I lean against the sleek, black Pagani Zonda R, heaving a sigh. Our getaway car isn't exactly road legal, but what, a heist is legal? What's more exciting than finishing a heist in a chase with a super fast car?

With one of the bags already secure in the trunk, the possibility of pulling this off---without being noticed---seems more and more tangible with every second that passes.

Staring at the dark mass of water that laps at hulls, I lose myself in a state of peace, a small smile on my face. Calm floods me as I take in the beauty of a night by the sea. The only thing that isn't calming is the stench of fish that hangs in the air. In spite of it, I find it easy to channel into Scarlett's head.

Her head is filled with different thought processes, both tugging at opposite ends of the spectrum. She's worried about things going wrong. She's wondering if everything is going smoothly, whether The Blackout and I are already out of the yacht.

"Hey, Scar, how's it feel being among the elite and pompous?"

It takes her a moment to answer since her thoughts are too scrambled, and I spoke without warning. "It's a nightmare, Jesus. If only you knew the number of old men who have tried to hit on me."

I gag, and she giggles.

"There's this one in really meaning to sock. In the balls."

"It's that bad, huh?" Again, I laugh.

"Yes. I'll survive though. Just after I have two glasses of something to drink. Preferably---

"Kool-aid."

"Hey, I'm old enough to---" Scarlett starts to say, however, my focus on our conversation is disrupted when I see movement just up the pier, close to the yacht the team is on.

A figure shifts in the darkness. It's hard to decipher who, or what makes up the form which casting a contorted shadow on the side of a luxurious yacht. Could be someone trying to crash the party. Well, as long as they aren't getting in the way of our mission, I couldn't care less.

"Ecstasy, hey. Can you hear me?"

"Yes, yes. I got a little distracted."

That 'a little' switched up to 'a whole lot' when I see the figure jump, pulling itself up the gleaming body of the yacht. That's definitely not normal---especially if the yacht is freaking huge. Only way to attempt and succeed such a feat is if one had some sort of... powers.

Or a super suit, in this case. It's that futuristic son of a bitch. What the hell is he doing here?

"---guys are almost done, yeah? My face hurts from all the fake smiles."

I see him clearly now that he is on the deck; the lights reflecting off the glossy appearance of his silver and navy blue costume. Way to be subtle.

"---you there? Is everything fine?"

No. "Yes, totally."

My mind and body start heading in opposite directions too, this very moment. I'm supposed to stay and wait for The Blackout to bring the weapons before we make our getaway and dub this mission a success. I'm supposed to get Shinobi's device. It takes a while to decide, but in a short while, I'm spiriting down the docks, using the darkness to shield myself, using the sound of the waves to mask my footsteps on the creaking wood.

It's been a while since I put the cash in the car, The Blackout must surely be coming with the weapons. If not, I'm doing him a big favour by stopping a nosey hero about to put all oyr efforts in peril. Bonus is, I get the bomb and a victory kill. It's a win-win-win situation.

"I just need to check on something," I tell my sidekick. "Contact me if anything comes up. I'll keep in touch."

After discovering that superhuman abilities are real---particularly that his all-time crush can read minds---Matthew is thrown into an off-the-grid world of superheroes and equally super villains---and everything in between that bunch.

Anne Vasquez is the ultimate definition of enigmatic. Her withdrawn persona leaves her a mystery to all, particularly because she has a secret to protect. But when one of her classmates discovers her ability, she vanishes without a trace.

Throw in a couple of years, and Matthew crosses paths with an attractive but also very outspoken woman who stumbles into his life as a new roommate---literally. With both of them having secrets, coupled with inexplicable injuries, they opt to stay out of each other's business.

But it's not an effortless task rooming with someone who has the same amount of skeletons in the different-coloured shades in their closet. Especially one who finds euphoria in chaos.
