"Look, that's Potato."
Nikolai tilted his head, brows furrowed as he tried to catch which cloud she was talking about. They all looked the same to him, and none like his chubby cat. Big, shapeless white clouds in a blue sky, pushed by a gentle wind. Her flourishing imagination had always amazed him. Where she would see the shape of a fantastic being and come up with its story and origin in the forest, Nikolai would only see a bunch of old ants-eaten trees and man-made stone paths.
Bringing her here was the best idea he had ever had within the past few days. A hill of orange, yellow and red flowers. Their favourite place. Their little piece of paradise, their way-out when things in their life would become too stressful. No one ever came here, they could do everything as long as they’d respect the place. Feel the ground underneath them, flowers tickling their exposed skin, and the wind playing with their hair. None of them wanted to see such a beautiful place disappear.
"And this one really looks like something not safe for work. Am I right?" She asked, turning her head to him, her heart-shaped sunglasses lost in ash-blond hair.
Maybe she was right, maybe it did look like something not suitable for kids, but he didn’t care. Didn’t care about the clouds, the flowers, or what his parents might say if he’d come home late. His whole world was just beside him and no matter what could happen around them – an earthquake, a bomb dropped, or even the apocalypse – as long as she had that pretty smile on her face, Nikolai didn’t care about the rest. She was his best friend, his confident, the best person he could have wished for in his life.
Leaning on an arm, Nikolai moved his head down slowly and put a soft kiss on blue lips. Gone were the clouds mimicking Potato or lewd shapes. Gone were the flowers lost in her hair. Gone were the thoughts of his parents waiting for him with another scolding. If he could stop time, this would be the moment to use this ability.
