Sitting on the edge of a cliff, John overlooked the whole city, a serious expression on his face.
You couldn’t tell if he was admiring his own looks or worried about something. But, he could see the city’s bright lights, leaving a mark on those who entered.
John lit a cigarette, his gaze still focused on the city below him as a childhood friend approached from behind. She was known for her unique ways of thinking and speaking.
She was known by most as Bunny, but John called her Bonnie.
Bonnie sat next to him, her feet dangling at the same edge and overlooking the same city.
John spotted Bonnie out of the corner of his eye, admiring her as if she was the landscape.
He turned his attention back to the city again, striking a conversation.
“Beautiful, isn’t it, Bonnie?” John said calmly.
“Yes, it is,”
John went quiet for a few seconds. As calm as he looked, Bonnie realized that something was bothering him.
“Are you worried about him again?”
John’s gaze drifted towards the shore, this time with a look that revealed his concern.
“Yeah…” He replied.
“You know it will get better,” Bonnie said.
“But how much is he willing to be like this[EH1] ?”
Bonnie took a deep breath and answered, voice deep with concern. “I don’t know,”
She knew what John was talking about. She knew that he would burden himself with worries until his brother stopped. It was no longer “just extra money.”
It was a psychotic addiction.
Taking a drag on the cigarette, John sighed.
“I can’t do this, Bonnie,”
“Give him one more chance. He will stop,”
“No... he will never.”
John got up, stubbed out his cigarette, and stepped back from the cliff. Holding his hand out, he pulled Bonnie onto her feet.
“I don't want to stay here anymore just to watch him fall,” He said.
Bonnie knew that it was inevitable. As John did, she knew it was also time to let go.
It was time to let Max go and move on.
She walked over to her bike and motioned for John to get on. He carried his backpack with him, the two riding off into the distance.
