I looked around, thoroughly confused, “Ms. Lance, thank you for gracing us with your presence.” Mrs. Roman, my familier teacher, scoffed smugly. I waved and chuckled nervously. “Okay, to meet your familiars you must repeat this incantation. We will go one by one, and Concord will go last, because she was late. ‘Familiar, my familiar, come from your world to mine, so that we may meet.” She smiled. A large puff of smoke appeared, before a gray cat emerged out of the smoke. “Most of you will get a cat, dog or owl.” I smiled, considering that I hated going first. Many people got a cat, or a dog. A few got an owl, but for the most part it was just house pets basically. “Concord, your turn.”
I nodded reluctantly, “Familiar, my familiar, come from your world to mine, so we may meet.” A puff of smoke popped up before being engulfed in fire. I flew back in surprise, hearing a screech. There was a second screech before a bird of fire flew from the smoke. “Ah! Geez, what is that?!” I yelled.
“A phoenix?! I-I thought that they were extinct.” she muttered. Then the vice principal appeared next to her.
“Why is there a fire?! Who started a fire, Concord?!” She yelled. I heard a few screams and yells from the girls around me as they all backed away. I smiled nervously.
“Um, come back?” I instructed, as more of a question than an order. The fire bird flew back as the fire died down. It perched on my head, Wow, it’s massive. But it doesn’t have talons, huh? I thought to myself in confusion. The teacher tried to walk closer but was stopped by the phoenix. It spit out a ball of fire that just barely missed Mrs. Roman “Oh, no, uh don’t do that.” I ordered with uncertainty. “Uh, haha, sorry.”
“Wow, that was impressive. Nicely done. Now send it back, by saying ‘thank you for your visit, leave this world, but come back another day.’” She explained.
“Uh, but he seems happier here,” I smiled with a shrug.
“Do it!” Ms. Delilah exclaimed angrily, still staying back out of fear of being set on fire.
“Ok, geez,” I conceded, putting my hands up in defence, “thank you for this visit, leave this world, only to come back another day.” The phoenix sighed unhappily, before jumping off my head and spinning around in a burst of flames. He transformed into a ring, and fell onto my finger.
“My goodness, I haven’t seen a familiar-object transformation ever. I mean I’ve heard of it, but it is quite impressive.” Mrs. Roman said with pride.
“How do you get it back?” I asked expectantly.
“Just say, ‘Familier, my familier come from your world to mine once again.’” She ordered, a circle of smoke appeared, then her familiar entered. “One more thing, as you get older, your familiar will get larger and stronger.” She explained, “Concored, I apologize but I don’t actually know how to get your familier back. It's an object transformation, so no one here knows how to do it.”
“Can’t I just say what you said?” I asked sadly.
“No, because your familiar is still in our world, he just looks a bit different.” She explained apologetically.
“Ok, got it.” I nodded sadly.
“It should be in your familiers textbook.” she ordered, “Now everyone else, please read chapters 1-10 by friday. It should explain the basics of training and such.”
“Class is over ladies, those of you who have detention go to detention, everyone else, free time.” Ms. Delilah explained, “Have that homework done by tomorrow.”
Sylvia grabbed my arm before I could go, “Hey dude, you should stay away from the girl who helped you out dur-” she cut herself off, “Where’s Vera?” she asked.
“Does it matter, I mean she does have her own life, right?” I joked.
“Yeah, whatever. Look, just stay away from Andrea.” she ordered, then rushed off.
Andrea? I wonder why. Whatever. I thought with a shrug.
“Concord Lance!” I heard Ms. Delilah yell, I winced at her words and slowly turned around, “Detention! Don’t forget!” I nodded, grabbing my book and bag. I rushed off to the building only to realize that I had no idea where it was.
I slowly swiveled on my heel, “Um, wher-” I was cut off when I found myself in a room, with one other person. It was Andrea. There was no teacher there, just us, so I went and sat next to her. “Hey, how’s it going?” I asked.
“It’s going, why’re you here?” she questioned, poking me in the face as I laid my head down on the desk, looking at her.
“I called Bell Samson a rich bitch, heh.” I said with a small laugh.
“Wow, that’s pretty courageous of you. Do you know what kind of familiar she summoned, apparently she’s extremely powerful. She summoned a snowy owl, it’s almost impossible to get those because they’re going extinct.” she explained, still poking me. “I mean even before they started going extinct it was hard because they’re only for powerful people.”
“Well I guess we’re complete opposites.” I laughed.
“Hm? What’d you mean?” she asked.
“I summoned a phoenix,” I took off my ring, “This is him, I named him snowy.”
“You named your phoenix, which is impressive by the way, snowy?” she smiled, still poking my face.
“I did, also, could you not do that. It’s really annoying.” I uttered.
“I’m hoping to piss you off, so you take off your shirt again.” she explained. I shot back in surprise, my face heating up thoroughly.
“Hehe, did it work?”
“Mm, nope, uh-uh, nope.” I shook my head side to side in objection.
She brought her hand to my face, and brushed her fingers across my chin, “Your fun.” At that moment we were both on the farthest side on the right.
I picked up my bag and rushed all the way to the left, “Ahem,” I cleared my throat, “That’s nice.” I whispered. I took out my familiar book, and started researching a way to bring back Snowy. I felt my eyes droop, as I dozed off. I completely passed out, resting my head on my book.
