After having been settled in for a while, Sel comes over with a plate with meat and a few vegetables on it. The vegetables were chopped carrots, and cooked potatoes. The meat, I was not sure of but it was a steak of some sort by the look of the cut. I politely asked him what it was, and of course he had no problem answering since he knew I was not from here.
"It's just venison." He says in a reassuring tone. "Like I told you before, things here seem to remain unharmed in a sense compared to everything else. Because of that, a lot of game come around the area."
What he said makes sense, a safer place would surely bring more wildlife, at least the kind like deer and such. I asked him how long he's had this meat.
"Are you trying to insult my cooking?" he asks with a more aggravated tone. I stumbled around with my words trying to assure him that's not what I meant. To my surprise he started to laugh. "You should see the look on your face!" he says, still laughing. He calms down enough to talk again. "Ok, Ok, but seriously the meat is fresh. I keep it preserved with magic so it wouldn't go bad."
I asked him if that was safe.
"Of course it is, I mean not all magic is perfect but the magic that I used for this, I've used for many years; even before all of this happened. Instead of using normal preservatives, you use magical ingredients and well I don't want to go crazy with the explanation. But answering your question again, yes it is safe and the food is good. Now eat before it gets cold." he concludes.
I began eating, the food tastes wonderful. So much flavor. As I was eating, Sel pulled out from a small drawer a wooden carving, and wood carving tools. When he set everything down on the table, he began working on his project. From what I could see, it looked to be a wooden carving of an elk-like creature. I asked him about it, and he told me that it is a creature of legend. He learned of it from the stories his father told him when he was a boy. He also said that he would go out and look for this creature but his mother would try and discourage him because of how dangerous things can be for a young child. Of course he still wanted to go out and search for the beast, along with other things; but he listened to her. His father would accompany him on his adventures so he wouldn't get in trouble, but when things changed, his mother did not worry as much. Although, it doesn't matter too much now. He said they are only memories, and that he was alone until I came along.
The carvings he does are based on memories, and things he has seen. With all the time he had, he chose to learn new things instead of staying idle constantly. His skill showed that he must have been doing this for a long while, or he was naturally gifted. However, the piece he was working on had a lot of meaning as well a lot of mystery about who he was before.
