“Hello again Syl.” The wolf alien says sitting in a grassy area obviously meditating. “Your telepathic abilities have increased drastically in a day.” He opens his eyes and they glow.
I recoil in my dream. “You don’t have to be afraid of me Syl.” He says voice reverberating inside of my head, I feel my body relax a little.
“I don’t know, a stranger inside my head, invading my dreams seems a little suspicious.” I say.
He’s in front of me in a second, “Who says I’m a stranger?” He tilts his head. “You’ve been through so much in so little time but what if I told you that you did most of that to yourself.” I curl my lip in disgust. “You have a destiny Syl, and you will subconsciously follow it no matter what you do to avoid it.”
“I don’t,” I recoil a little further into the dark feeling myself starting to wake up.
“No matter what your father did to avoid it.” He smirks as I wake up.
Rolling over gasping I grab my head and tremble violently for a second then breathing deeply, imagining the glow of the telepaths eyes, imagine shutting off my head completely.
‘I don’t want you in my head anymore.’
‘Meditate.’ His voice or a memory of it immediately responds.
“Get out!” I screech. Master sits up growling, expecting somebody to be in the room and instead finds me in a shaking ball on the floor. I breathe heavily for a second then calming lift my head, “Th, the nightmare, I had it again.” I whimper. Concerned he leans down and pulls me onto the bed. Into his shirtless chest. I snuggle into it.
“Maybe you shouldn’t go see the telepath today.” He murmurs in my ear.
“He’s not the telepath I’m afraid of,” I say honestly, “I need his help to protect me from the one in my dreams!”
My Master makes a face, but growls softly, “Fine, if you think it will help.”
We get up, I follow him to the kitchen and watch him make food. He looks like he throws himself into everything he does.
“Do you like cooking?” I ask touching his paw when he gives me a plate of meat.
He takes his paw away, “It’s not about enjoying, it’s necessary.” I lower my eyes, why is he so cold all of the sudden. ‘Is he mad that I’m having nightmares or does he know that I’m keeping something from him?’
Taking a giant bite of meat I try again, “I really enjoyed yesterday with you.”
He pauses then quietly responds, “I did too.” Grabbing his food he sits across from me, eyes hard, cold, and far away. I think about it, yesterday I did talk about how I didn’t like their standards, made a...friend? With the Omega he warned me about. And...the colorful wolf.
“Who was that wolf from yesterday?” I ask.
Master teeth flash as turns his head to look at me, “Don’t talk about him.” He warns.
“Why are you in a funk?” I ask boldly, sitting up straighter. “I can decide to get hurt and not say anything but I thought we were going to try harder to understand each other, I can’t do that if you won’t trust me!”
‘Trust.’ I think wincing.
“I told you-” He growls and then gets up, ears and tail tucked as somebody knocks on the door. He cusses softly and pointing at me puts his finger to his lips and gestures behind the island table to hide. I obey quickly, becoming frightened at how Master was acting.
Peeking I watch him open the sliding door. What looks like one of the nurses says something and armed officers burst into the house.
I feel the heavy presence on my mind murmur, ‘Well this is boring, I can’t have you caught yet, I’ll see you later Syl.’
Then an unfamiliar voice says, “It’s not here anymore it must have been hiding behind the house, it’s running that way hurry!” The armed forces leave as soon as they enter but the nurse stays for a moment.
“You have no right to burst into my house.” My Master growls voice so low and intimidating I know his eyes are glowing red.
“My job is to experiment on anomalies and keep the mothership safe from spies. It doesn’t matter if it’s an Omega or not I have full clearance to tear it apart in front of you if I so wish.” I peer out a little further to see this “nurse” is a little different. He’s dressed in an all black uniform and gloves. I hide again when he says, “Don’t tempt me, General.” I hear a frustrated sigh and then the “nurse” mockingly says, “Let’s hope we don’t see each other any time soon General, I’d love to see what expression you make when I take the only person that loves you away from you.”
I peek out again after the door swishes shut, then Master loses it, tail and hair along his spine standing up he roars eyes blazing with fury. He claws at the air, teeth grit so hard I'm worried they’ll crack. Drooling he doesn’t even seem to recognize me as I walk up to him slowly.
“Master?” I ask softly.
“I’m gonna kill that telepath.” He growls and storms out of the house. I run after and grab him.
“Master, wait!”
He continues meanicingly, pulling me along behind him.
Running in front of him I gasp, “It might not have been him!” He pauses. “We can still go there to ask questions but you need to calm down.”
“I can’t, I can’t after I was so close to losing you.” He snarls, fully controlled by the rage. I take three steps forward and then get on tippy toe, pulling his head down into a kiss. He’s shocked for a moment and then quickly drags me inside.
Pinning me against the wall he growls, “The rules.”
I just whimper and kiss him again. Pheromones start to fill the room. My Master calms and begins to kiss me back. I start shaking because I'd been scared too, scared that I would lose him. I whisper these things feeling the kiss become less needy.
“Thank you.” My Master says voice raspy. My eyes widen and as I pull away I see that he had been crying. He wipes his eyes and then smirks, “Don’t get used to it.” He turns his head to where the “nurse” went. “I should kill that scientist though.” He growls. “But I can think of something far more satisfying then that. Come on baby.” He picks me up, “We have a Captain to talk to.”
“You’re not going to attack them?” I worry.
“No,” Master says for the fourth time and opens the double doors.
“I didn’t think you’d be coming today,”' The startled Captain manages to say nonchalantly. “Sorry about the false alarm.”
“I want to rank higher than that Bastard.” Master says cutting to the point, “It’s the least you could do after sending him to my door.”
The Captain bears his teeth, “The least I could do was warn you, and I did.”
“I’m not letting him take away my Omega just because he can!” Master snarls venomitly. “Unless you want a bloody mess the next time he invades my territory, I suggest.”
“You suggest?” The Captain cuts in, “You think you have enough rank to speak to me like this?”
“I’ll prove to you that I do, you know I’m worth the effort Captain,” his voice softens, “I follow the laws and care more for our fleet than most Captains do.”
The Captain is quiet, “You’d literally be fighting my right hand wolf, the Admiral of the Fleet.”
Master looks at me and then answers, “I need to do what I must to protect this fleet and my Omega.” My heart swells and then I notice the pink telepath looking sick.
I reach out to him and he looks angry.
‘I don’t want this, I never wanted this.’ He sounds so sad, ‘I’m sorry this is all my fault, now the admiral and your Master are going to get hurt.’ I see a quick memory of him trying to stop the Captain, ‘He over exaggerated.’ The telepath explains. ‘I have a duty to report everything but the Captain doesn’t normally-’ He turns to his Master and then shuts up avoiding eye contact with me. ‘Jealous.’ He finishes spitefully after a minute.
‘Get this jealous?’ I think and see the smallest nod. ‘Guess it runs in the species.’ I think to him but he doesn’t communicate anymore.
The Captain orders his Omega, “Summon the generals and the court, there’s been a rank challenge.” I’m surprised when the telepath jumps up and pulls me away to where we can watch but be far from the fight.
“Don’t try to interfere, if you do...Well you’ll both probably be killed.” He says. “Be prepared, your Master might be killed or the Admiral, they’ll be healed but will lose a lot of rank. If either of them forfeit the other has the decision to kill them or let them be healed. No matter what as long as they don’t break the rules they’ll be revived. It’s going to be gory.” He whispers.
I open and close my mouth, ‘I can’t think of anything to say.’ I think. I turn to him and he goes ‘what?’
‘Did you hear me?’ I ask.
“Are you trying to think to me? He asks out loud. “You’ve been pretty guarded all day, good job by the way.” I turn away, ‘It’s not me.’ Again he doesn’t respond so I close my eyes and feel that there is indeed nothing forcing itself into my head anymore. It’s so light. And peaceful.
A snarl draws my attention back to the court floor and wolves are pouring in murmuring quietly. Master goes to sit in his rank position between two other generals. They are black and grey. I wait, breathe in my lungs until all the wolves are seated.
“Who’s-” I start to ask.
“Shh.” The telepath warns. ‘We aren’t allowed to talk.’ He thinks to me. I nod. A good minute has passed and then the doors open. A very large and very scarred wolf enters on all fours before standing. My heart plummets, he’s at least twice my Master’s size, yellowish blonde but has a lot of pink from all the scars.
“Who would dare challenge me?” He chuckles as if this was all a joke. He squares his shoulders, “I came from the battlefield for this so I’ll definitely be killing you for wasting my time."
He walks by all the seated wolves, each one lowers their head and eyes as he passes. Except one. Master stands up as the Admiral steps back in disbelief. “Garbled noise.” Comes through my collar. I manage to catch the other half of it but it’s just growling. I mean I guess that is their language. I just need to ask him his name. Later.
“I knew this would happen one day.” The admiral says softly almost excitedly but his eyes are sad. “You’ve always made me proud, I look forward to seeing if you’ve gotten strong enough to beat me.”
My Master grits his teeth. “We all do what we must.” He says looking sad too, then they separate, standing on either side of the room. I shiver as the mood in the room changes.
The Captain growls, “No completely removing any pieces of your opponent and no talking, this is a fight to the death or the conquerors discretion. Those that fight honorably will be revived. Fight!” He roars and the wolves eyes turn red.
'Wait already?! It's happening so fast!'
The wolves race towards each other at full speed. I yelp as my Master is immediately barreled over disappearing briefly underneath the other much larger wolf. The telepath covers my eyes and I just pull his hand away, I need to watch, for my Master.
For a long time it’s hard to see what's happening. The noise, blood, and fur flying is all so overwhelming. A loud snap is followed by a roar from the admiral. Master let’s go of his leg but not quick enough. The admiral has his scruff in his jaws and is desperately trying to pin him while clawing his stomach to pieces. I barely see Master’s claws move but he slits the Admiral’s throat with a roar the Admiral loses his grip on Master’s scruff. Master jumps on his back trying to further attack the neck and they roll biting and snapping bones.
For a long while it’s any wolf’s game and I start to think that my Master might actually have the upper hand but then- I feel the telepath grab me covering my mouth as the Admiral weakens Master enough that he can barely stand on all fours. I get tunnel vision as the Admiral bites into Master’s back making him arch it with a roar of pain and then everything goes fuzzy as he rips Master’s spine half out of his body.
I can’t breathe, ‘It’s over, he’ll be revived but he’ll lose rank.’ The telepath thinks to me. But Master refused to submit even after that. I try not to cry as the Admiral grabs him by the neck, slowly the room fills with the crunch, crunch, snap. He drops the limp body and stares at it making sure it wouldn’t get back up. Master’s eyes are still open and he gargles weakly. When the admiral turns his back Master’s head goes limp making eye contact with me.
I’m not sure what he was thinking or what he saw but as the telepath tried to drag me away something snapped. Maybe half-dead he saw the scientist instead of the telepath but the desperate howl that came out of his lungs was like a dead wolf walking. In fact, he was a dead wolf walking as he got back onto his back legs. The Admiral, much weaker than he was portraying, is barely able to keep himself upright, he lets out a roar and they crash together.
I gawk as Master grabs the Admirals wrists and then bites his jaw from underneath, the height difference making this easy. For a second everyone is silent then the snap of three bones at once being broken or dislocated indicates the defeat of the Admiral. The Admiral falls to the floor, jaw dislocated and wrists broken. Again there is silent disbelief as my Master is the one left standing, having completely incapacitated his opponent. He howls triumphantly then slowly falls, the next second I jump up racing to him.
“Congratulations are in order to our new Admiral.” The Captain says. “Revive our champions.”
“Wait!” One of the generals says, “This was hardly an ordinary match, he won because the Admiral thought he was down and he fell a second after, doesn’t this mean they both lose?”
A doctor approaches with shots, “They are both still conscious but neither can continue in this state,” he says casually after examining them. He stabs them with the shots. I pick up my Masters head and hold it while trying to look at anything but him so I don’t seem affectionate. I feel the click of his neck as his bones heal.
The Captain looks like he is considering something, “True if this was on the battlefield they would both be dead but, in the end”, Growl, “still won.”
“It was a close call.” One of the other wolves grumbles.
“Most battles are.” The Captain snarls, “Enough of this, you all saw the fight! They both fought honorably and it was the old Admiral’s weakness that made him turn his back on his opponent too soon. Maybe he can learn from this and become stronger.”
My Master’s eyes open and he looks up at me, I beam.
